The most famous documentarian in America, Ken Burns, recently did a multi-part history of the American Revolution, which included a very famous excerpt from a letter in 1776 from Abigail Adams to her husband John Adams (later second president of the U.S.) when he was working on crafting the foundational documents for America:

I desire you would Remember the Ladies, and be more generous and favourable to them than your ancestors. Do not put such unlimited power into the hands of the Husbands. Remember all Men would be tyrants if they could.

It's a good letter, and the subject of an interesting statue in Boston, but I'm not sure her husband paid much attention unfortunately.

Let's not insult John Adams. He loved and admired his wife, but it was admittedly a weird and radical idea at the time.
