I saw this at the weekend. I was dazed for the rest of the day, can’t stop thinking about her raw visceral bravery. I wasn’t the only woman crying.

The image of Tracey dancing in her flat, triumphantly, is the one I’m holding in my heart.

It’s an amazing exhibition, go, if you can.

Why I never became a dancer | The Arts Council Collection

Like the majority of Tracey Emin’s works, Why I Never Became a Dancer is autobiographical. Emin recalls her teenage bid to leave the seaside town of Margate, where she had grown up, by entering the British Dancing Championship. However, as she danced,...

Thank you for the recommendation. Looks brilliant!

It really was, I have seen a lot of her work before but this was incredibly powerful!

Planning on going in summer. Looking forward to it.

I would dearly love to go but it's unlikely as I'm unwell. I have been enjoying her various interviews though. I've grown increasingly fond of Tracy. I think she's a bluddy treasure.

My exh loathes her and always ranted about her when we were married. It adds to my thinking that she's great if she can piss off that misogynist!

I went to Art school and am a few years younger. Her work at that time wasn't my thing but id love to see this show and see her early work with more recent stuff.

Also, she shares lovely animal things on Instagram so I love her for that too!

I could relate so much to a lot of the pain in her paintings. I found My Bed so sad and so raw. I took a couple of photos but it didn't feel quite right, like it was something you shouldn't be looking at

I have slightly mixed feelings about her, but I read recently that she has invested a huge amount of her money in young artists and in helping homeless youngsters to learn skills and get qualifications, so bloody good for her. I also love hearing her talk about how happy and relieved she is that she never had children

I’ll definitely get there at some point. There’s work I’d very much like to see again and new work I’ve only seen in reproduction. I think her career has had its ups and downs but her best work is powerful and deeply affecting. Also, and I know this isn’t relevant to the exhibition, I really admire the way she’s faced the biggest challenges and the way she’s now supporting the new generation is extraordinary.

I'd love to go but its too far and I dont have the time or money.

If you can, visit Rose Wylie's show at the RSA too - its 2026, and she is the first woman to ever to have a solo at the RSA!

artant · 13/03/2026 21:37

Yes, Wylie is on my list too. Her Serpentine show a few years ago was awesome.

Going tomorrow. Have loved her work for so long. TE was interviewed on Womens Hour last week, well worth tracking it down on catch up.

We don’t realise how lucky we are to have such an incredible artist walking among us. She has such a powerful voice.

MassiveWordSalad · 20/03/2026 09:36

Gosh, I’d love to go. I’ll see what I can do. She’s a force of nature - I can remember back in the YBA days thinking ‘what the fuck’, but there is so much more to her, and her work in reviving Margate and supporting young artists is an inspiration.
