She had a wonderful career, topped off by having her Obituary written by Julie Bindel.

I enjoyed her blog, accessible to us non-academics, funny , fresh and sharp.

Oh, that's sad. Her work was excellent and Verbal Hygiene is brilliant in examining the rise of 'political correctness' as a term of derision.

A great loss! 😢

Really sad. I saw her give a lecture when I was at uni 30 years ago, she was brilliant and it opened up a whole new way of thinking about language for me. Agree ‘Verbal hygiene’ was excellent, I also remember it being so much clearer thsn most of the woolly academic texts we studied.

Oh no this is so very sad. She was my first linguistics lecturer at uni and she was brilliant. We all had a MASSIVE crush on her. I lost touch and always thought I wanted to message her in later years to tell her what an amazing impression she made and how much she taught me, but of course, never did....RIP Debbie. You were an absolute icon.

I have only just heard (via Caroline Criado Perez's blog) and I am disproportianately upset and have no one to tell. How lucky are those who were taught by her! Her books and blogs have been so important to me in hearing a strong intellectual feminist voice. I have sent her posts to so many young women.

What a sad loss to the world, we need her so much right now.
