Surrogacy: Meghan Trainor

I did a site search and couldn't see a thread about this - sorry if I've missed one. Meghan Trainor (of 'All About That Bass' fame) has recently had a baby using surrogacy. Although it is a particularly 'inflammatory' case (third child after two pregnancies of her own; she posted a picture of herself blatantly posing as postnatal) I still thought the largely negative reaction was interesting in terms of suggesting public opinion has turned a bit on this - a few years ago I am sure anyone criticising this would have got a much stronger, 'be kind' pushback.

I have to say that 'We had endless conversations with our doctors in this journey and this was the safest way for us to be able to continue growing our family' particularly bothered me - safest for whom? Presumably not the woman whose womb was rented.

The worst one for me is Louise Thompson.

She nearly died during childbirth and had a very traumatic experience. So of course, she’s happy to pay someone else to take the risks.

pandowo · 22/01/2026 13:39

Meghan doesn’t want to put the weight back on she’s lost! Sorry sounds harsh but it’s true. She’s had a massive “mummy makeover”

She’s having another baby ?

She’s having another baby ?

She’s currently undergoing IVF and hash tagging surrogacy on all of her posts. She won’t directly confirm it but she’s liking every positive comment about surrogacy.

WhatATimeToBeAlive · 22/01/2026 13:41

And it's non-binary apparently 🙄

TheToteBagLady · 22/01/2026 13:43

That photo is beyond creepy.

Poor baby.

Which is fine - but then don't have another baby! One of the reasons I won't be having a third child is I just don't want to be pregnant and post-natal again, in part because I hate what it does to my body. But the solution isn't to rent someone else's body instead!

I think surrogacy is morally wrong in all cases, but have much more sympathy for why someone would consider it if they were unable to have any children at all otherwise. It doesn't mean I endorse that choice - or think it should be legally available - but I get that desperation and despair. Doing it in this circumstance, to have a third child, is just so unthinkably selfish to me.

Ahh, so telling people without telling people. Yes she should know better after everything she said happened to her in pregnancy/childbirth.

TheToteBagLady · 22/01/2026 13:46

And following on from Brookyn Beckham, I wonder what all these celebrity children will have to say in 30 years from now, about how the circumstances of their conception and birth were shared so publicly

I completely agree with you and I would say the same thing, I don’t want to ruin my body again, it’s still ruined as it is. But I wouldn’t pay to use another woman’s body either. I either take that risk myself or don’t have another baby

How does the baby know it's non-binary?

AnAlpacaForChristmasPleaseSanta · 22/01/2026 13:53

Oh FFS. I had her post pop up in my IG for some reason (I don't follow her and only know that one song) but just glanced at the photo, assumed she'd recently given birth, thought aww and scrolled on.

What is with this new trend for these baby buyers to post in hospital beds with the newborn to give the impression they've just gone through a full pregnancy and childbirth themselves. Anything that makes the actual woman who did just that bit obsolete is all fine though, eh Meghan?! 🙄

RollOnSpring26 · 22/01/2026 13:58

That photo is clearly taken to make it look like she's just given birth !
Glad the tide is starting to against these things more now

I find the idea of getting another woman to do this when you've already got two children quite outrageous

I agree it's to appropriate the birth. This one made me feel so sad for the baby and surrogate. It's so clearly just born, covered in vernix - I just deeply believe that that baby should be being held by the woman whose body she's been in for 9 months if at all possible. Of course not all babies can be held by their mother straight after birth, but in this case it isn't impossible for medical reasons, it's being denied to make an adult happy.

Cynically I suspect she’s awaiting yet another book deal or exclusive to tell the story.

Judging by what the couple put up on Instagram they’re also quite shite parents to the child they’re lucky enough to have, so it’s awful that they’re thinking of having another in the first place let alone the whole rent-a-womb-aspect.

A baby cant consent to this shit

Same as Robbie Williams wife. Ayda? Aldya? Something like that. She admitted that they had babies 3 & 4 via surrogate because she didn't like the weight gain that funnily enough comes with pregnancy. I suppose at least she was honest, but it's the only thing I'd give her (very limited) credit for.

TightlyLacedCorset · 22/01/2026 14:06

I don't see any negative opinions on that post , they all seem defensive of Meghan and very reductive and 'be kind' in their push back. Perhaps I'm not seeing them all, my phone doesn't always load pages correctly it's old.

I find her statement about the 'safest way for us to grow our family' incredibly gross and full of rich-privilege entitlement.

It's reverse misogyny, it is handmaid's tale. 'I do not want to risk my health, so I'll risk that less advantaged woman's instead because I MUST have a newborn' It's akin to when rich women wouldn't breastfeed their own babies and employed poor wet nurses to do it instead, in order to save their figures (I'm aware there were other reasons, but this was the reason for some).

No, but it gets MT attention. Which is all that matters in these people's vacuous little worlds.

CelticSilver · 22/01/2026 14:08

In the same way that suicide doesn't end pain - it just moves it onto someone else, so the dangers of pregnancy and childbirth don't go away with surrogacy - they're just taken on by the mother.

Horrifying.

wishingonastar101 · 22/01/2026 14:08

I hope this has been reported to social services.. this woman is clearly unhinged and is pretending that baby is hers and that she has given birth... this is so wrong.

Was she actually simulating post birth?

Sorry, you're right that the Buzzfeed comments are - I just posted that article as a handy summary. But I meant more the posts on Instagram (which the Buzzfeed article does mention). The first five comments are:

'Why is she in the hospital bed acting like she gave birth lmaoooo'
An GIF of Elizabeth Moss in The Handmaid's Tale
'Surrogacy is forbidden where I come from. Cant help but thinking about the poor woman who Carrie this precious baby for nine month and had to give it away. It breaks my heart.💔'
Another GIF of Elizabeth Moss in The Handmaid's Tale
'This is the peak capitalism & patriarchy. Rich women renting other women's bodies shouldn't be normalized.'
