I keep getting adverts on here for a barbers/hairdressers called "Jack the Clipper". It's obviously an hilarious riff on Jack the Ripper (but with a bit of Sweeny Todd mixed in?) I guess.
I hate this. Why is it okay to name something after a notorious (possibly fictional) rapist and murderer of women? I am well aware that the Ripper is pretty much a cult, that "he" likely didn't exist/wasn't one person, but the perpetuation of this rubbish in establishments like this just smacks of sexist bros thinking its funny and cool. The dead and mutilated women (who were real) are neither here nor there.
There was/is? a bar in Margate called Rippers or something, that there was some objection on here to a few years back, but here we are again. How about a Peter Sutcliff themed restaurant or a Fred West cocktail bar?
I know there are more pressing issues, but this persistent casual misogny and disregard of the violence done to women's bodies is exhausting.
If anyone hasn't read Hallie Rubenhold's "The Five", it's an interesting counter-narrative that centres the women. She also did a podcast where she talks about the crap she got from male Ripper cultists.

(also I have name changed for the 50 millionth time, so this isn't a plop and run post)
