"Jack the Clipper" Ads

I keep getting adverts on here for a barbers/hairdressers called "Jack the Clipper". It's obviously an hilarious riff on Jack the Ripper (but with a bit of Sweeny Todd mixed in?) I guess.

I hate this. Why is it okay to name something after a notorious (possibly fictional) rapist and murderer of women? I am well aware that the Ripper is pretty much a cult, that "he" likely didn't exist/wasn't one person, but the perpetuation of this rubbish in establishments like this just smacks of sexist bros thinking its funny and cool. The dead and mutilated women (who were real) are neither here nor there.

There was/is? a bar in Margate called Rippers or something, that there was some objection on here to a few years back, but here we are again. How about a Peter Sutcliff themed restaurant or a Fred West cocktail bar?

I know there are more pressing issues, but this persistent casual misogny and disregard of the violence done to women's bodies is exhausting.

If anyone hasn't read Hallie Rubenhold's "The Five", it's an interesting counter-narrative that centres the women. She also did a podcast where she talks about the crap she got from male Ripper cultists.

(also I have name changed for the 50 millionth time, so this isn't a plop and run post)

Did you watch Gavin & Stacey? I loved G&S but thought the serial killer surnames were controversial and I'm surprised they didn't get loads of complaints. I suppose if people don't like the barbers they will vote with their feet.

MotherofAdults · 23/10/2025 09:05

I haven't watched G&S (possibly the only person in the UK that hasn't?).

The thing is people (men, some women) will go, won't care and it just becomes another bit of acceptable casual misogny that dengrates half the population and we just have to put up with.

Oh I'm with you OP.

See also the depiction of witches in popular culture/ fancy dress with no acknowledgement that witches were simply women persecuted for knowledge or defiance.

I say persecuted. It's much worse. I cannot actually get very far with the stories of what was done to witches and their families without feeling extremely sick.

I'm always saddened that the impassioned students who fight for other opressed groups to be allowed to claim their own historical narrative, would never dream of fighting for the same for women.

I think it's disgusting- but it shows the patriarchy is still super strong, alive and kicking and that women hardly advocate against sexism. Like he wasnt just casually sexist, he was a full fledged serial rapist and murderer- homocidal sexist maniac. But noone says anything about it- except you and a few others. Most women are asleep and sitting ducks, like lambs for the slaughter, men (and misogynistic women) have completely screwed us over and we just around not doing anything about it. I mean Trump the serial Rapist and sexual harrasser is president of the US, fawned over by the 'Royal' family and PM here. Saville the serial rapist sexist pedophile demon was Charles and Thatchers bestie- Charles cannot associate with anyone like that without a full background check- he knew what his friend was. His brother is a pedophile, their Mp's and house of Lords are full of rapists and pedophiles, his f*cking Bishops are rapists and pedophiles.

How much more patriarchal can it get until they lead us into a complete Handmaids Tale society.

Lighttheway · 25/10/2025 23:10

Until Trump the rapist is elected and it's right in our faces, and even then its mainly ignored.

MotherofAdults · 26/10/2025 13:35

I feel like the dehumanisation of women and general pervasive misogny is worse than ever and from all sides.

We just don't count, aren't worth anything, aren't really human.

I write this with a really delightful advert on this page from the Southbank Centre with a picture of an agressive looking bearded and befeathered drag queen (?) in a show called "Kunsty", which is nice.
