Womens+ jiu jitsu class - can they do this?

I’ve been looking for a woman’s grappling/beginners BJJ class so I can do something about my fitness. But this is what’s available in one of the gyms I tried. Can they do this?
Can they have a “women’s and non-binary” class? Because then it’s women and men.

@BeltaLodaLife
Is this really in Scotland? Do Scottish people spell tyres the American way (tires)?
If it’s accurate then it’s not a surprise it’s in Scotland.

Well like the person whose DH is trying to apply to join the WI, a man might be able to complain of discrimination if he is not allowed to join.

but as almost everyone in the world is “non binary” (because no one really fits binary gender stereotypes), then I guess this is just a class for everyone.

BiologicalRobot · 12/09/2025 16:19

No they can't. If they've stated women then it is based on sex not gender.

It’s in Glasgow. That’s not how we spell tyres.. the person writing the post has just made an error.

No, they can’t advertise it as women only and let males in, even ones with special lady or envy feelings

BeltaLodaLife · 12/09/2025 16:24

In the description it says women (trans inclusive) and non binary so it’s a class for women, trans women and non binary people… so that’s a mixed class. But it keeps coming up when searching for a women class. I wanted to challenge it but didn’t know how to succinctly write that they are breaking the law. Or who would enforce it even. It’s Scotland so…

Followed by a sauna, eh?

That’s not really the part I care about. I use the sauna and steam room at my council gym and it’s mixed sex. I’ve never used a sauna in the UK that isn’t mixed sex.

My issue is that I’m a small woman, and I want a grappling class were I won’t risk being paired with a larger man. It’s why I’m looking for a woman’s class instead of the mixed classes I have tried.

Is the head tilty person at the back left of that photo a bloke? The resolution is poor.

NoBinturongsHereMate · 12/09/2025 17:55

They can have a women and non-binary class, provided it's women (actual) and non-binary (female). Not if it's women (trans inclusive) and non-bjnary (both sexes).

The latter would be unsafe for women, discriminates against women whose religion or belief prevents them having close physical contact with men, and discriminates against men without a gender identity.

LeftieRightsHoarder · 19/09/2025 20:29

I think contact sports should all be single-sex, to avoid the very obvious increased risk of injury. Is it legal to advertise a class as being for women, but ‘trans inclusive’, meaning transwomen, ie men?

BoulevardOfBrokenSleep · 19/09/2025 23:15

Can't advise on the legalities but just wanted to offer a bit of advice on BJJ - excited that you're thinking of giving it a go!

Most of the (normal, mixed) class will be practicing moves gently - if you are new and you ask a woman who's already there, they'll be happy to partner with you - or ask if you can work as a three.

At the end there will be rolling -live sparring. It's ok to sit this out completely when you're new, or only do rounds where you can find a partner you're comfortable with.

To be honest, most coloured belt men will know enough not to squish you but ask the ladies already there who is ok to roll with just in case anyone is a dick.

I did another martial arts class with a young female person who was most insistent they wasn't a woman, they was NB so maybe they have renamed the class for someone like they 🙄

MimiGC · 19/09/2025 23:46

Would I want to grapple with a large man? Hmmm, let me think…no thanks!

ArcticBlue · 20/09/2025 00:07

Doesn't solve the problematic class you've linked but I can recommend mnbjj in Glasgow, they do a women's only class that isn't followed by an asterisk

I agree with this, but if the nonbinary female is taking male hormones they would have an advantage

NoBinturongsHereMate · 20/09/2025 01:50

Indeed. But that would be regulated under sporting body rules rather than the Equality Act.

I mean I see where you're coming from, but if you are looking for any element of some self defence training from it then you will need to see what you can do against a big bloke.
A higher belt will be skilled enough to let you work without crushing you

You are right and in that case, I will join a mixed sex class. If I join a women’s class, it’s for a reason.

GaraMedouar · 20/09/2025 12:56

I’ve just checked them out on Facebook and yes the tilt head person at the back is definitely a bloke. I reckon the class was made women* to accommodate him specifically. I’m amazed that à martial arts class wouldn’t think of the implications of having a hulking great bloke battling another woman. Unfair to all those women who want a women only class - I know plenty of women would be happy with a mixed sex class but if you’re specifically looking for a women only class that’s for a reason and you want real women only.
