I feel sad about Angela Rayner

OK, I am left leaning so maybe I am already biased, BUT, I do feel sad that a woman who overcame early issues, who was “proper” working class, who didn’t speak the kings English, but rather with a proper local dialect, and achieved a high office without a single spoon in her working class mouth, has gone.

i do understand that many people will agree with what has happened. I would have been fuming if the story played out the way it had as a different party, and I understand that Angela had to go, BUT as a woman who believes in holding up other women, particularly those who aren’t born to certain families, or have expectations placed on them from word go, I do feel a bit sad this morning.

There was a working class woman in the House of Commons. A working class woman was the deputy prime minister of this country. It is not even 100 years since working class women could vote. I feel sad.

I feel frustrated on Angela Rayner's behalf because she has screwed up and damaged a remarkable career. Her personal life is complicated - on the electoral roll in three places, right to buy council house, NHS payout, trust, one-off relationship, divorce - and an easy target for the right wing press. The Telegraph is still digging and has found documents showing her solicitors submitted a higher valuation for the Ashton house which lifts her 25% share to the amount she needed for the deposit on the Hove flat. The level of hounding of her is frightening. Jeremy Hunt and Nadim Zahawi haven't returned home to find graffiti on their property.

Yeah, the left have short memories about physical intimidation of their opponents.

That includes violent picketing as well as assaults, graffiti etc that Tory politicians have suffered.

I stand corrected. On the subject of 'Tory scum', bad of Angela Rayner to say that.

She’s a grown up with access to the same tax and legal advice as anyone. If she chose to ignore advice then she only has herself to blame. Sometimes it’s just best to overpay tax and let your accountant sort it out later.

After selling an inherited property we had 30 days to pay CGT, we paid the maximum due and then accountant sorted out the actual amount less allowable expenses.

If you are ever in doubt with tax, ignorance is no excuse.

I read the DT article about the retrospective revaluation of her property in trust and one of the commentators was correct that the land registry records the sold price and not valuation. So presumably her solicitor had to write to the registry and admit they had somehow given the incorrect sold price which again may suggest stamp duty underpayment. The “actual” sold price was allegedly £160k more than the original registered figure. It’s a public record so anyone could research the land registration. I suppose she may be able to sue the solicitor who registered the property which set in motion this debacle.

I have said she screwed up. It's on her. At the same time, the press pile-on is excessive.

Bollocks.

She’s had no more pile-on than she would have wished on, or pushed for, or would have happened to, any Tory.

Wherehasthecatgone · 08/09/2025 16:20

I am rather confused that people think it is ok for the deputy prime minister not to know how to ask professionals for advice because of her background - and then think she should remain deputy PM despite this rather glaring shortcoming that would clearly have a huge impact on her ability to do her job.

The pile on Zahawi when he evaded £5 million tax was far less. It was so low key it took him six months to resign. And he was the chancellor!

Yes it's bad enough if a tax dodge is attempted on purpose but in this case she seems to have believed that Kent conveyancing would know the ins and outs of her divorce and dc's trust as if they were psychic.

The fact she didn't know to ask experts really does make her seem like a total amateur completely out of her depth.

That reads like you think calculated dishonesty is better than naivety. I’m sure that isn’t what you meant, is it?

By ‘naivety’ do you mean ‘stupidity’ or ‘negligence’? Or something else?

Naivety Grin. She is a senior politician. Yes she's always flogged the 'working class northern lass done good' character but even she should have known one asks the correct legal experts for advice.

The fact she didn't makes you wonder what else she's made up as she's gone along.

Naivety though! who knew that was what we were calling senior politicians caught being hopelessly incompetent and utterly hapless.

DinoLil · 08/09/2025 16:52

Nope. I don't like her. She's a hypocrite imo. She can jog on.

The left wing media is vastly outnumbered by the right. The Mirror and The Guardian are basically it. I’d settle for evenhanded coverage but it’ll never happen.
@Blossomtoes

Why do you think that the left wing media is outnumbered by the right?
Could it be because the right wing press sells more copies because it appeals to more readers? A pp said upthread that the Mirror was cutting jobs. Presumably the reason for this is that they can’t sell enough newspapers to pay all the wages.

I doubt it, conveyancing solicitors usually have a clause in their terms of business that they don’t give tax advice.

It sounds like she didn’t want to pay for tax advice or got some but decided to ignore it because she didn’t want to pay the stamp duty and thought she could fiddle some figures to get away with it.

Could it be that the right wing media is owned by the wealthy? Never heard of Murdoch?

I believe the trust that owns the Guardian is very rich and Mike Danson who owns the New Statesman is also very rich.
Why would the wealth of the press barons affect how many copies are sold?
