I feel sad about Angela Rayner

OK, I am left leaning so maybe I am already biased, BUT, I do feel sad that a woman who overcame early issues, who was “proper” working class, who didn’t speak the kings English, but rather with a proper local dialect, and achieved a high office without a single spoon in her working class mouth, has gone.

i do understand that many people will agree with what has happened. I would have been fuming if the story played out the way it had as a different party, and I understand that Angela had to go, BUT as a woman who believes in holding up other women, particularly those who aren’t born to certain families, or have expectations placed on them from word go, I do feel a bit sad this morning.

There was a working class woman in the House of Commons. A working class woman was the deputy prime minister of this country. It is not even 100 years since working class women could vote. I feel sad.

Regardless, I’d like to see Starmer stop chasing Reform ideology , be plain about his policies and how and why they’ll work, and take some money off the rich for a change. And please, stand up to nasty bullshit, instead of silence. John Hesley tonight on ch 4 news sounded like a Reform member . Inspire people, for a change. Have some colour in the speeches. There were issues with with Corbyn, but he was excellent at that.

PigletJohn · 07/09/2025 18:11

I would hope that as Chancellor of the Exchequer, Zahawi made at least token efforts to get people to pay their tax.

Other people, that is.

thelovelyview · 07/09/2025 18:12

And @Gloriia, calling a woman politician Angie is sexist crap.

Not sure it's sexist crap as it is her name but you would think that Beth Rigby would realise if seems a bit overly familiar and not very professional of her to repeatedly call her Angie.

GabrielsOboe · 07/09/2025 16:47

No problem.

The point is - Starmer could really do without it right now, but it does set up the rather tantalising prospect of some internecine warfare within the party.

Sorry to sound like I’ve had a sense of humour bypass, but I don’t think internecine warfare is a tantalising prospect at all. It’s the last thing we need. Many people in this country are really struggling with the cost of living, the economy looks like it’s going to get worse before it gets better and the global political situation looks scary. I think we need a functioning party in charge.

Yes, Starmer has - that’s why I posted it.

People post all kinds of shit. I make it seven since July last year.

Whether one would wish it or not, it is the nature of Labour.

The sooner they are out, the better.

IMHO.

Ain’t that the truth.

To the 7th AUGUST.

The 10 people to leave the Labour Government so far are:

  1. Louise Haigh (November 28 2024). Resigned as transport secretaryafter failing to correct police records in 2013 regarding a stolen mobile phone.
  2. Tulip Siddiq (January 14 2025). Resigned as economic secretary to the Treasury after an investigation by the independent adviser on ministerial standards.
  3. Andrew Gwynne (February 8 2025). Sacked from job as under-secretary of state for public health and prevention for comments in a WhatsApp group.
  4. Lord Cryer (February 14 2025). Resigned as government whip in the House of Lords due to personal reasons.
  5. Anneliese Dodds (February 28 2025). Resigned as international development minister and minister for women over cuts to the international aid budget.
  6. Lord Hunt (May 22 2025). Retired after holding post of minister of state in Department for Energy Security.
  7. Baroness Curran (June 6 2025). Resigned as minister of state in Department for Energy Security due to ill health.
  8. Vicky Foxcroft (June 19 2025). Resigned as government whip in the House of Commons over proposed cuts to disability benefits.
  9. Lord Moraes (July 22 2025). Resigned as government whip in the House of Lords due to personal reasons.
  10. Rushanara Ali (August 7 2025). Resigned as homelessness minister in Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government after allegations she increased rent on a property she owned.

Whereas Rayner has to put up with sneering from people who aren’t fit to tie her DMs.

Hello? Hello? Is there anybody there?

What are Angela Rayner’s achievements that make other people not fit to tie her boot laces?

That's a different question.

Booting out an occasional politician from each government is one thing.

Deciding that Johnson, Truss and Badenoch are all-round preferable is a different discussion. Or Farage, of course.

Sorry but you don’t get to include three from the Lords who retired or resigned for personal or health reasons. It’s seven. Three fewer than Johnson lost from his government in the Commons over the same period.

Starmer has now suffered the most ministerial resignations, outside government reshuffles, of any prime minister at the beginning of their tenure in almost 50 years...

Where did you see that please?

Blogswife · 07/09/2025 19:11

Totally agree . A sad loss but I suspect she’ll still be involved from the back benches as soon as the dust settles , she’ll probably ( hopefully) be back in the cabinet .

Eight, including Rayner.

I notice her apparent list of 'achievements' conveniently omits the net number of homes delivered during her period of appointment as housing minister.

Sally2791 · 07/09/2025 19:15

I am sad as well. Especially when you know what the scummy tories got away with.

DenizenOfAisleOfShame · 07/09/2025 19:15

BIossomtoes · 07/09/2025 19:00

She listed her achievements in government in her resignation letter.

She listed some legislation that she promoted (in parliamentary terms) to the House of Commons. Any minister could do that. Even Nadine Dorries. Or Liz Truss. Or Tulip Siddiq. Or Rushanara Ali.

I don’t think the boot lace tiers of the country need fear going to Hove.

Boston365 · 07/09/2025 19:30

I’m not seeing that much praise for AR or any other Labour MP’s on this thread 😬

Out of curiosity, are there any front or back bench MP’s that people think are actually principled and doing a good job for Labour ?

BIossomtoes · 07/09/2025 19:33

Given that period was just 14 months that’s hardly surprising.

Nonsense. The data are in the public domain but Angela Rayner chose the cowards option by failing to include the numbers for the one key metric upon which her performance can be judged as housing minister.

Realistically how many houses do you think could be built from a standing start in 14 months? This government could deliver a gold ingot to every doorstep in the country and you’d still be complaining about it.

None were being built from a 'standing start' - what an utterly ridiculous thing to say. You clearly have no knowledge whatsoever of the planning process yet you're still attempting to defend Angela Rayner's dismal failure in her term as housing minister.

Whilst the numbers are super low, thats due to planning processes he safey authority, as well you know.

How many CH's did the Cons build in 14 years? its a relevant question.

Ooh about the same number as the promised 6,500 new state school teachers?

Just a guess.
