I feel sad about Angela Rayner

Neededa · 06/09/2025 06:13

OK, I am left leaning so maybe I am already biased, BUT, I do feel sad that a woman who overcame early issues, who was “proper” working class, who didn’t speak the kings English, but rather with a proper local dialect, and achieved a high office without a single spoon in her working class mouth, has gone.

i do understand that many people will agree with what has happened. I would have been fuming if the story played out the way it had as a different party, and I understand that Angela had to go, BUT as a woman who believes in holding up other women, particularly those who aren’t born to certain families, or have expectations placed on them from word go, I do feel a bit sad this morning.

There was a working class woman in the House of Commons. A working class woman was the deputy prime minister of this country. It is not even 100 years since working class women could vote. I feel sad.

They were always going to get her for something. I'm also leftwards leaning and the hypocrisy of the right-wing press and the crooks in the former governmentment sickens me. What has happened over the ££££s of handouts to Tory party cronies made during covid? Is Baroness Mone still in the House of Lords?
I hope we will see more of Rayner, she made a mistake and she owned up and faced the consequences unlike so many others.

LovelySunnyDayToday · 06/09/2025 18:11

Agree OP. We will miss you Ange ❤️

JustStopItNora · 06/09/2025 18:12

Still not sure why people are ignoring that she mis-used her own disabled child's trust. That to me is much worse than a simple tax fraud.

Live by the sword, die by the sword. Just imagine how vicious she would have been if it was anyone else who made this ‘mistake’.

The only part of this situation I could be sad about is that David Lammy now has her job.

This in a nutshell

She played up to being an oik. She made a political career out of being a caricature, a pantomime working class northern woman.

Boris Johnson played the ludicrous toff. She played the foulmouthed barmaid up the Clog & Pump.

Jesus fucking CHRIST! 🙄🙄🙄

I agree with this. And yes, Michelle Mone is still in the House of Lords, but on leave of absence.

Except vote for them. 😂

I couldn’t care less about your vote but that post was still wrong.

Jumpers4goalposts · 06/09/2025 17:51

100% and the reality is she was always going to be held to much harsher standards than a man.

On what basis can you make such a silly statement?

DenizenOfAisleOfShame · 06/09/2025 18:14

thelovelyview · 06/09/2025 18:03

I feel sorry for her too. I do think she was an idiot though, and should have taken better care to be squeaky clean. Shame on the nasty snobs calling her an oik, though. Maybe Nigel is more to your taste.

I can’t bear Farage.

Having no sympathy for The Holy Lady of Stockport does not equal any respect for the opportunistic bell end that is Farage.

Bad week for Rayner supporters?

Even if it were true, that is relevant how exactly?
Number three in the tried and tested route to defect blame from Labour wrongdoing:

  1. The Tories were/are/would be worse
  2. You must be a Reform supporter
  3. If everything else fails, hurl insults.

You're not even original!

Menopausalsourpuss · 06/09/2025 18:24

Yes I think it's a bad week for Labour and their supporters in general. I am with Farage in thinking they may not last past 2027 (thank the Lord!).

Why spread misinformation about a small conveyancing firm?

You are clearly still committed to Rayner vote or not.

I totally agree - she over inflated the price for house and then took money out to buy a pad 400 miles away with her new fella. It's definitely questionable morally.

I also happen to find it pretty sickening that she sued the NHS a decade later for her son's treatment when he was born. I know people are entitled to do that, but it just seems pretty grabby. I don't like the suing culture and suing the NHS is pretty grim for a politician who claims to 'love' the NHS so much and go on about how underfunded it is

I hear what you are saying. But the fact she used some of her disabled son’s compensation to fund her property purchase is not form. That’s for his care. She says the Hove property is her main residence, so why is she moving away from her son and her constituents? She is a feisty lady, very vocal and never had a good word to say about the opposition. She was reprimanded for calling them scum. Why did she just not look on Chat GPT for tax advice? They would have explained the situation and told her that she needed to get specialist advice. This was clearly tax avoidance, if not, then she is not bright and shouldn’t be deputy prime minister.

She wasn't moving into it full time, she was using that house for nesting with her ex-husband and it was the best mid-way distance for both of them. Both because it gives the kid stability but also due to his disabilities.

I do agree with the ethics report that she acted with integrity and honeslty. She did speak with her lawyers and a conveyer, I get saying she should have gotten 2nd opinion. But do you get a second opinion just for the sake of it, I don't think so, I think you only do stuff like that if you think the advice is wrong. She also couldn't ask civil servants in her department as that would be using state resources for something personal, they aren't there to do so.

I do think the interview with Beth Rigby was sad, especially when she was talking about begging the press not to publish photos of him and they did. Along with the hate of her being on holiday this year.

Like when Dominic Rabb was foreign secretary, when Afghanistan was falling to the Taliban, Downing street asked to get back on the 13th he still decided to spend an extra 2 days in Crete.

Again Nadhim Zahawi was found to be “careless” in not paying £4.8 million of taxes he was meant to - quite different to being described as acting with integrity but making a mistake nonetheless. I doubt many people at the time even heard about Zahawis issues either, he was in government at the time. He was education secretary at the time, and then given the role of Chancellor for the last few days of BJ's government.

Berks21 · 06/09/2025 18:41

What’s her class and accent got to do with anything? Such a patronising view.

I feel sorry for the farmers who’ve had to close their farms; the parents who’ve had to take their kids out of private schools; the employees who’ve been made redundant because of the tax increases imposed on small businesses by this useless government; the OAPs who nearly had their winter fuel payment taken away - all of which were supported and voted for by Rayner. For years she’d berated anyone who sought to minimize their tax liability. So no, I have no sympathy- she’s simply a victim of her own greed and stupidity unlike the millions of people up and down this country who are struggling all thanks to her, the DEPUTY PM, and her colleagues.

Her lawyers didn’t advise her to get a second opinion. They advised her to get a tax opinion as they could not opine on tax matters. She opted not to do that.

She sued for legitimate reasons. They did fail him. I love the NHS but medical professionals should always be held to account for what they do and I'd rather people sued them than just say because it's the NHS I should accept bad care and not want the staff who failed to have accountability.

Technically she didn't sue outright, but sued for compensation which from them and onwards her sons fees would be covered - that is in a trust and is needed to look after her son for his needs. In the immediate neonatal period - staff didn't give him enough supervision which contributed to his blindness, developmental difficulties, and lifelong care needs. Her son was born at 23 weeks and suffered a grade-four brain bleed and the NHS accepted responsibility for it during proceedings around compensation.

She also didn't mismanage her sons trust at all - In January 2025, as part of divorce, she sold her 25% share in the family home ( around £162,500). That money then legally became part of her son’s trust. She used the proceeds from that sale as the deposit on a flat in Hove

autienotnaughty · 06/09/2025 18:49

I agree I was championing her to succeed but it’s her fault and she had to go

She did, she went to a conveyancing solicitor after her other lawyers told her to get more advice on the tax.

The only room for criticism is that she relied on people a conveyancing solicitor who “might not have been tax experts" but the ethics report found that she was honest and acted with integrity and really thought it was the right advice. I accept she broke the code and also deserves accountability but some of the coverage had misinformation and I do think the details are complex.

As far as I understand it, pretty much everything you’ve said about the process is wrong.

The integrity comment in the report bit is right, but it’s meaningless because Sir Laurie Magnus was in no position to know why she didn’t act on the recommendation that she should get specialist tax advice.
