I feel sad about Angela Rayner

Neededa · 06/09/2025 06:13

OK, I am left leaning so maybe I am already biased, BUT, I do feel sad that a woman who overcame early issues, who was “proper” working class, who didn’t speak the kings English, but rather with a proper local dialect, and achieved a high office without a single spoon in her working class mouth, has gone.

i do understand that many people will agree with what has happened. I would have been fuming if the story played out the way it had as a different party, and I understand that Angela had to go, BUT as a woman who believes in holding up other women, particularly those who aren’t born to certain families, or have expectations placed on them from word go, I do feel a bit sad this morning.

There was a working class woman in the House of Commons. A working class woman was the deputy prime minister of this country. It is not even 100 years since working class women could vote. I feel sad.

And old Etonian.

Does that magically make him white?

TheAutumnalCrow · 06/09/2025 16:29

I don't recall the press gloating about whether Truss or Kwarteng would be able to pay their gas bill on their reduced wages.

It affords him a great deal of privilege. He’s not a kid from a South London council estate.

SpaceRaccoon · 06/09/2025 16:29

So, given that, I think it’s entirely fair that the media gloated after Truss sacked Kwarteng and then left herself.

Fair enough, but then it's also fair to gloat when Rayner has been caught being either dishonest and a massive hypocrite, or spectacularly stupid. She's not a sacred cow.

Gowlett · 06/09/2025 16:29

It’s the media. Once they get their claws in…

How convenient identity politics is. A moveable feast.

I don’t think that’s what the poster was suggesting, but feel free to interpret it that way 🙄

I think what they were driving at is, on one hand, as a black man, he belongs to a historically underprivileged group, but as an old Etonian, he’s exceptionally privileged, so it’s entirely possible his educational privilege cancels out/lessens the lack of privilege he might have because of his race.

Facts are so inconvenient, aren’t they?

Indeed! All parties are well aware 😆

No one is saying that though. Most people are just saying they feel sorry for her - which I think is fair.

I wouldn’t bother it’s only when it’s Labour are they exempt.

The media go for everyone.

She was up front with the attack on others, it’s just come round to bite.

Yes, she did attack others for similar things, but I think it’s also understandable to feel sorry for her.

Kwarteng is the child of middle class Ghanaian immigrants. He was born and lived in Waltham Forest. He attended Eton as a scholar and has a double first from Trinity.

He was never disadvantaged but was not from a wealthy background, as is being implied.

Incidentally, there’s every reason to think that Truss and Kwarteng did a lot less damage to the economy than Starmer and Reeves are doing now.

allthemiddlechildrenoftheworld · 06/09/2025 16:49

@Neededa serve her right!!! she absolutely knew what she was doing! as for rachel from accounts?? she stated she would always stand by her!! would she stand by any other tom, dick or granny doing the same thing?? I very much doubt it!! quick enough calling for the resignation of anyone guilty of iffy behaviour till it comes to themselves!!

PropertyD · 06/09/2025 16:51

She was stupid and entitled to think the rules didn’t cover her. I sort of understand that she heard the words £40k and then £70k and thought £40k was fine with her and blocked her ears to any red flags flapping. Maybe she was too busy to follow up the advice she had been recommended to take, or just plain forgot….

She has form for swapping which is her main residence and which is secondary depending on which is cheaper. She then praised the NHS to high heaven whilst also suing them. She also grabbed the Right to Buy scheme for both her and her current partner and then claimed they lived apart.

The way she wears her background as a badge of honour is wearing.

But the thing that has really done it for me is the way she used her disabled son’s trust to pay for her to get a luxury flat with her latest boyfriend who apparently has a more complicated life than she does!

Who then claims to be doing it for her children whilst moving miles away. Who was going to get her share of the property if not her son. He didn’t need to pay her for it. Yes, he has more of the house as his share but who was she thinking of giving it to if not him.

His trust fund now is £162k lighter of cash.

Labour always has to be held to higher standards because of their core values. The Tories can sleazebag away to their hearts content (and have done since their inception in 1834) because the people who vote for them do so largely through self interest. Such as lower taxes and better returns on their investments. They aren't interested in morals. The screw is turned even further for a female Labour politician for obvious age old misogynistic reasons. I'm a Labour voter and yes OP, I am really saddened by every aspect of the whole thing.

Thanks for that revealing insight into the self image of Labour/ their voters. They really do think they're moral/kind/less self interested than other parties/voters. Well no one else thinks that about them - I think Labour voters are more likely to be on benefits/work in the public sector so are voting for higher benefits/public sector pay so are totally voting in a self interested way. Unfortunately the state (aka the taxpayers) has now run out of money as the Tories also wasted loads ofoney particularly on lockdown/net zero etc so are now thought of as equally bad at running the economy so we need a change from both these failed parties (which is likely to be Reform as things stand).

I wasn’t implying that Kwarteng was privileged (although he obviously is). I was putting the lie to the implication that he’s beyond criticism because he’s “a man from a minority group.”

I heard Joanne Verrico the conveyancer who made the statement is 82.

I want to to be like that at that age.. having the whole of the government looking at you. Phone calls probably telling you not to say a word until the report came out etc.

I suspect Ms Verrico took one look at the situation and thought ‘hold on a minute Missy - you are not taking me down with your weasle words. I will agree my own statement and put it out on my timescales’

And she did.

82, I didn’t know that. She deserves an award.

Nor did I claim he should be. But that seems to be the implication with Rayner due to her being a working class woman.

What award do you have in mind? One for crass stupidity for putting your hand up when you didn’t need to?

Your take isn’t surprising as per. The media followed Rayner’s lies.

EasternStandard · 06/09/2025 17:12

The more people post for Rayner the better it is she’s gone.
