Transwoman on women's ward

Sallycinnamum · 17/06/2025 18:34

Had a minor gynae procedure today but nevertheless was very anxious leading up to it.

Was wheeled back to the day ward to be greeted quite literally (started waving at me) by a transwoman in the bed opposite me.

There was no doubt he was a man and being completely immobile due to a spinal anaesthetic with no underwear on I asked the nurse to completely close the curtains so he couldn't look directly at me.

Spoke to a nurse who confirmed it wasn't a mixed ward.

I am so upset. I felt so vulnerable especially as I couldn't walk so had to pee into a bedpan in clear earshot of him.

I've emailed PALS but I feel so bloody fed up of it all. Had a man next to me in the M&S lingerie changing rooms a few weeks ago and was made to feel like a total bigot when I complained to the staff.

@dylexicdementor11 for religious reasons I can only be treated by females who were born female. Now are you saying that my beliefs come second to a male who thinks he is female and wants to treat me regardless of my personal wants/needs? That we should all just shut up and play pretend?

EstherGreenwood63 · 17/06/2025 21:21

None the wiser? Now I KNOW you're trolling. 🤣

it's actually crazy how scared of transwomen mumsnet users are when they probably encounter multiple of them a day lol. they're probably serving you at a till or are your doctor or (shock horror!) teaching your children and you're none the wiser hah

I have a trans male friend who you would never ever know is trans. I’m fascinated to know how well they’d be received in a women’s only space 🤔

MarySueSaidBoo · 17/06/2025 21:22

It's just so tedious isn't it. I felt so positive with the Supreme Court judgement but the NHS appears desperate to avoid enforcing it. My daughter works in the NHS and she said no one will ever stand up to transwomen in the unit she works in as they're just so aggressive and toxic. Real women go away quietly, I guess.

SidewaysOtter · 17/06/2025 21:22

As I understand it’s not illegal to allow trans women access to a single sex space

This is wrong, @bigfacthunter.

The Supreme Court ruling of 16th April 2025 stated that where a facility is single sex, this means biological sex.

No-one changes sex so a man who is born male remains a man, no matter how much he "transitions", has surgery, takes hormones or whatever.

Still a man and it has been clarified in law that he is not permitted to be in women-only spaces.

Justasmallgless · 17/06/2025 19:41

Also I assume that if you were having a gynae procedure, that this was specifically a gynae ward??

so what would a trans woman be doing in there as a patient unless he specifically requested it??

I’m scratching my head at this. A man with his bits intact on a gynae ward how is this allowed to happen?
And why the hell would he be there?

The world has really gone mad. Absolutely nuts.

Some women are sadly infertile. Many women choose not to have children because they don’t want to. All those women are female. All women are female. Men are male, and none of them are women.

Oh FFS, it’s all just so twelve year old at the school debating society. Just give it a rest with the introductory Reddit talking points, will you?

i don’t think anyone’s broken the law though have they. As I understand it’s not illegal to allow trans women access to a single sex space, it’s just not illegal for organisations/institutions to deny care and services to a trans woman in a single sex space if they find it appropriate. Or have I got the wrong end of the stick? Happy to be corrected by someone who actually knows, not just someone blinded by personal bias.

The Supreme Court ruling confirmed that sex in the Equality act means biological sex.

When a single sex space is provided then only people of the specified sex can use it. If there's a female ward then only females should be in there.

If no one ever in the whole entire universe could tell that your friend isn’t actually a man then why would they go into a female space in the first place? This about keeping men out of women’s spaces. The men wouldn’t care either way.

Edited to add - the whole you can NEVER tell. Up
close and personal you can. There will be exceptions to this (rarely), but people are polite.

Happy to help

What makes a woman....

  • Adult- past puberty
  • Human- of the species Homo Sapiens
  • Female- a combination of the following: XX chromosomes at conception, a reproductive system that is organised around the production and gestastion of the large gametes, an imbalance of strength between the upper and lower body, spontaneous development of breast tissue at the onset of puberty.

What does not make a woman

  • What a male defines as a feminine
  • Personal feelings
  • Not wanting to be a man.

Yes you have got the wrong end of the stick. HTH

Sallycinnamum · 17/06/2025 21:26

I don't think it was specifically a gynae ward but it was female only, which I expect is how the hospital thinks it will wriggle out of it.

I'd be interested to know where he is tonight as I overheard the nurse saying he was being kept in overnight. Wonder if he's on a women's ward?

That’s hilarious. Only the very young and the terminally online could believe this nonsense 😂

Yeah, we know what you meant. It's so 2022, things have moved on, embarrassing for you.

What makes a woman a woman then???
Why don't you tell us what you think makes a woman a woman? Or a man a man for that matter.

Sorry I’ve offended people, I just wanted to offer up the opinion that trans women may not be something to fear, my experiences are positive. But I’ll bow out now as I know I’m in the minority on mumsnet.

Thank you for your apology.

I don’t think you’ve offended people, they just disagree with you.

No one thinks that all transwomen are to be feared - just the same as other men, there are good and bad ones. Unfortunately there’s no way of telling just looking at them - unless you know something we don’t ?

Black men or Jewish men are also not welcome on women’s wards. Not because they are all to be feared . Not because of their ethnicity or religion. Because they are men.

And it’s not only about fear. It’s about privacy and dignity. Women are entitled to this when they are undressed , sick and vulnerable in a hospital ward.

I am not scared of transwomen. But just like I would prefer my son not to see me semi naked- and am ok with my mum or sister doing so- I prefer not to be on a ward with men. It's called privacy and dignity.

God what a load of old bollocks. And I say this as a humanities prof with a very high threshold for pretentious bollocks indeed. 🙄

It’s a stunning brave and beautiful article, I think we should all read it and inwardly digest the conclusions of someone who confidently states that their research has involved the collected wisdom and non biased opinions of people who post on TwitterX and Instagram. I mean , fair dos, there’s possibly but not very likely to be some proper top notch academic research in there, it’s not just cobbled together using the help of AI.

Yes I’d rather the responses weren’t deleted. We’re grown up women and don’t need posts being censored and hidden like gender activists do! People should see what they write.

So incredible that you'd say this. They never pass. Just the other day I had a guy using she/her serving me at a bar. Before that, a guy using she/her at a thrift shop. A few weeks prior to that, a woman using she/her came to be my locksmith. Upon first glance in poor lighting, yes -- watching them move, speak, just exist beneath the sunlight...CLOCKED.

Most everyone who sees a T-person knows what they are haha. We're all being polite.

you're being absolutely ridiculous. it could be a rather manly cisgender woman. not all women look, sound, and act the same.

Would people stop using the term "cis" FGS.

It's highly offensive. Women are just women.

NotMeekNotObedient · 17/06/2025 21:40

Sorry you had to experience this OP. I'm glad you have complained to Pals. Look forward to hearing what they come back with.

I'm quite frankly sick of hearing about the loss of trans 'rights' . What about women?!
