Transwoman on women's ward

Sallycinnamum · 17/06/2025 18:34

Had a minor gynae procedure today but nevertheless was very anxious leading up to it.

Was wheeled back to the day ward to be greeted quite literally (started waving at me) by a transwoman in the bed opposite me.

There was no doubt he was a man and being completely immobile due to a spinal anaesthetic with no underwear on I asked the nurse to completely close the curtains so he couldn't look directly at me.

Spoke to a nurse who confirmed it wasn't a mixed ward.

I am so upset. I felt so vulnerable especially as I couldn't walk so had to pee into a bedpan in clear earshot of him.

I've emailed PALS but I feel so bloody fed up of it all. Had a man next to me in the M&S lingerie changing rooms a few weeks ago and was made to feel like a total bigot when I complained to the staff.

Sorry I’ve offended people, I just wanted to offer up the opinion that trans women may not be something to fear, my experiences are positive. But I’ll bow out now as I know I’m in the minority on mumsnet.

Most men probably wouldn’t harm you either. Women still have the right to be in places such as single SEX (clue is in the name) hospital wards away from men, even those with special identities, for privacy and dignity at the very least, and expect such places to be women only.

Trans Women Are Men. Join the dots here. Think about why single sex spaces exist in the first place.

Geez is it fucking silly season on here or what, has a klaxon call went out to Reddit hard of thinkers to hop on over with their ridiculous reality denying stupid input. So many threads. Is there a rota? I’m talking generally btw, not directly to @ninjahamster

Justasmallgless · 17/06/2025 19:41

Also I assume that if you were having a gynae procedure, that this was specifically a gynae ward??

so what would a trans woman be doing in there as a patient unless he specifically requested it??

What about the experiences of many people where they were not positive. Would you like a very long
list?

I have a question — if a trans woman has a gender certificate forgot what they’re called, does that trump the Supreme Court ruling and does that allow them to be recognised as female and use female only spaces?

No, and this was the crux of the judgment. The question put before the court was essentially about whether a gender recognition certificate should make the blindest bit of difference or not.

And the judges very eloquently said that if it is reasonable for a woman to object to the presence of a man in her changing rooms or rape crisis group, it is hardly going to be unreasonable for her to object to the presence of a man with a magical piece of paper which says he is a woman.

UnlockedXCX · 17/06/2025 19:45

I've had lots of good interactions with trans people. Doesn't mean I'll pretend they're all what they say they are. 😑

I have educated myself, that's why I don't believe male people should ever be considered women.

SternJoyousBee · 17/06/2025 19:47

@idkbroidk Away with that hyperbolic pish.

it’s not hateful to object to men on women’s wards in a hospital. Especially one sharing that he has still has his “tackle”. That isn’t some poor vulnerable, marginalised soul. It’s a man getting off on being allowed to trample on women’s boundaries.

Sallycinnamum · 17/06/2025 19:47

It was a day unit so I'm not entirely sure it was a gynae ward but myself and the two other women were in there for hysteroscopy's.

It was definitely not a mixed ward as confirmed by the nurse.

What are the actual rules in hospitals now? That if you ID as a woman, you go to the women’s ward? Or does the person need to have had gender reassignment surgery done to be allowed to go?

I got here from listening to trans people and thinking on what they said. Laughable that you are unable to prove your own point and instead link to an article. You're all the same.

Can't you see that for once when I'm bleeding, wetting myself and my genitals not adequately covered I'd rather not have a man in the bed opposite me?

He couldn't have been placed on the male ward but his dignity trumped mine it would seem.

Wards are meant to be single sex.
(Plus of course you can ask for intimate care to be done by HCP of same sex.)

Plus one would hope the staff have not only been highly trained, but also are observed, pulled up on any bad behaviour, have the risk of losing their job if they do anything suspect, and have dbs checks in place. They’re also generally busy so can’t be in one place too long. However a man with a penis sitting in the same room as you all day and night has plenty of opportunity to harass you and make you feel uncomfortable. You you know how we know this? Oh yes, all our vast experience of being harassed and made to feel uncomfortable by men with penises.

But you can PLEASE enlighten me as to why a man with a penis who ‘believes’ he is a woman is suddenly not a threat to us. We would love to know. Genuinely. Because so far no one has given us any logical explanation.

Stop creating straw man arguments.

No one has said or even implied that trans people are something to fear, in all cases. That's not the point. We are just sick of being compelled to go along with the delusion that 'trans people are who they say they are'. Men can't be women. That shouldn't be hateful or considered bigoted.

If i order a pasta salad and a steak turns up, no amount of 'but you like steak' is going to persuade me that it's ok. I ordered a fucking pasta salad.

It really should be that simple.

Stop straw manning and acting like we are being so nasty to the poor mentally unwell menz.

ApoodlecalledPenny · 17/06/2025 20:00

If they’ve got their dicks visible then yes I’d be worried about the sex of the staff too. I mean a visible duck isn’t something you want to see, especially not on someone enthusiastically waving at you.

The law says that if there is a womens ward then only biological women should be in it.

Makes no difference if you have a gender recognition certificate or not.

Genital surgery has never been a requirement for a gender recognition certificate.

The bloke said himself he had a cock and balls, the OP wasn't relying on his 'physiological features and behaviours as indicative of their transgender status.'

Not sure what we were supposed to take from that word salad except maybe that random people on social media frequently post shite. Not really any surprises there.

Absentmindedsmile · 17/06/2025 20:07

Isn’t that illegal?

Given the Supreme Court ruled that sex means biological sex.

So female wards are female wards, no patients with penises allowed.

Edited

From what someone else posted, it is illegal.

However, surely there’s difficulty in policing this. If someone says they’re female, even if they’re clearly not, what do the staff do? Ask them to take their pants down and prove it? It seems like a non-starter.

DonnaDonna0 · 17/06/2025 20:11

It’s not on, people can say what they want, but
it was a male on a female ward full stop.
If he’s trans or not and I would not be happy with that OP either and neither would many other women.
Most men would agree too.

I read this, I thought it was going to be a more interesting read than it was. I feel a bit disappointed as it could’ve been a good article, but the conclusion was that the writer’s analysis was largely indeterminate.

“I therefore contend that hypercomplexity and indeterminacy is a largely unchangeable structural-discursive condition of our contemporary social mediascape.”

What do you make of the article @idkbroidk ?

That is why people shouldn't have been allowed to falsify their medical records. Well that and the difficulty of trying to give cervical smears to men and prostate exams to women!
