Woman set on fire on NY Subway and police walk past

This story has been in the news for a few days and I keep reading it and just honestly despair. Man unknown to woman is asleep on a train. He ignites her clothing with a lighter and calmly leaves the train to watch her burn. Even fans the flames as a policeman walks past and the policeman tells him to step back. It’s just horrific. No one tries to put the flames out they just film the fire from a distance and the woman dies 😭

This sounds horrific. I wonder if people were confused.

I haven't seen this video and I'm not going to look, but why do people feel this urge to film tragedies?

Unfortunately because people will watch it. Do people who watch this kind of stuff mind if it was their relative who was the victim?

Radishknot · 26/12/2024 20:49

Also in terms of lack of reaction, a lot of people need time to process what they are actually seeing.

Could some of these people have assumed it wasn’t real?

I think this is likely.

It's truly bizarre. I mean she's on fire but standing up, no panic or anything. I thought it was a statue or something at first, until she moved.

Add that to the police casually watching and strolling past and I think many of us would have watched in bemusement, not gone racing in, past the police to try and intervene.

Do police have explicit instructions never to touch a burning person or something, that they must wait for the fire service? I just can't understand how they didn't do anything.

the nypd chief of police has given a quote saying that, that man was securing the scene while his colleagues got fire extinguishers, the video of him walking past is awful though as it just seems so lack lustre, but without a fire extinguisher I'm not sure what he could do at that point.

Video shows NYPD officers standing by as woman set aflame burns to death

Police have defended their response, beginning when officers patrolling the station smelled and saw smoke coming from the F train.

The video I saw on X yesterday where the woman is literally moving whilst on fire is the worst thing I think I have ever seen.

It looks like she is on Spice or something and paralysed so unable to do anything to help herself and the movement of her arm is absolutely chilling.

I really wish I hadn't seen the video.

In the old days of the internet one had to visit dodgy sites like the (I believe now defunct) rotten dot com or liveleak to access snuff and other gore videos.

No need for those sites now since these videos are all over Twitter. A video was posted on reddit too but thankfully it was quickly removed as overly disturbing videos aren't allowed on there. There's a reason why police put up cordons after an accident, as well as privacy the public seeing this thing can lead to mental health issues.

For more info he was an illegal immigrant from Guatemala who apparently was deported before but re-entered.

I don't understand why there isn't more shock about this. I find it appalling but most people haven't heard of it.

UnhappyAndYouKnowIt · 27/12/2024 21:02

It was horrific and I felt like any site I visited on the day had it everywhere.

Her name was Debrina Kawam.

I’m not going to watch the video but if this is true and not a faked video, then in these days of the attention economy with more and more outrageous ’stunts’, the only possible explanation is that everyone thought it was some sm prank being filmed for people’s reactions. We cannot have arrived at Hunger Games level of violence and harm for entertainment. We just can’t.
