Iraq want to legalise the marriage of 9 year olds

Iraq want to bring in a law that allows 9 year olds to get married. Activists say it legalises child rape.

However, the States has legal child marriage. Hundreds of thousands of children marry there and no government seem to want to change that.

Yes, there are four states with no minimum age for marriage. Child marriage is depraved and disgusting.

It's a worldwide problem. It's estimated that 1 in 3 girls worldwide will be child brides by 2030.

In Iraq, the current legal age is 18 but nearly 30% of marriages are underage.

117 countries have child marriage and six countries don't specify a legal age. Even countries where they stipulate a minimum age of 18, there are exceptions or it's ignored. In India child marriage is illegal but it has one of the highest rates of child marriage in the world.

Niger has the highest rate with 76% of girls marrying before 18.

The US has recorded 12 and 13 year olds marrying.

If you think that is bad in the USA marriage can be used as a get out of prison free' card after rape.

Only 13 states outlaw child marriage with no exceptions.

You mean they let rapists out just because somebody is stupid enough to want to marry them? That's insane.

@XChrome No it's worse than that. If a man rapes an underage girl he will be spared any criminal proceedings by marrying her.
The child , of course has no say in this and it's down to the parents who often agree to avoid a " scandal" . Sickening does not even come close.

In the States? Is this going on among Mormons and other patriarchal, cultist religious sects?
I had heard about something along those lines happening in the Mormon community.

In the States children have limited legal rights and can easily be forced to stay in the marriage. They face overwhelming legal and practical barriers if they try to leave home to escape a forced marriage, get help from an advocate, enter a domestic violence shelter or retain an attorney.

Children are not allowed to initiate a legal proceeding – such as seeking a protective order or even filing for divorce – unless they act through a guardian or other representative.

Child marriage was universal until 2018 and in four States there's no legal minimum age.

I don't mean literally out of jail. I should have explained it better, as @Redannie118 did.

Typical scenario, man rapes child, before the child gets to the police he asks parents if he can marry her, money is often exchanged but in some places it is about a girl's reputation and so the family think she is better off married that not a virgin.

And it is always older man and girl.

And as someone else said upthread, a child can't go to a shelter or even start divorce proceedings.

Child marriage is still prevalent across the U.S. Here’s why.

Child marriage was legal in all 50 states until 2018. Now, 10 have banned it.
