I've just been to see Copa 71, a documentary about the very first women's soccer World Cup held in Mexico in 1971, before FIFA intervened and tried to wipe out women's football as a spectator sport.

On at my local Vue cinema. Only three of us in the cinema to watch a heart-warming film featuring many of the women who participated in 1971, including several members of the England team. A fantastic reminder of what our mothers and grandmothers were up against. And an example of why no one should ever assume women older women are 'just' nanas. Those women were the kickass sports starts of their day.

Sounds interesting, shocked that’s in my lifetime

I saw it today. FIFA were such bastards. There were about 30 of us at the screening - mostly girls on a school trip - well done that school!

That's such good news, @71Alex. Glad girls got to see it. The generation of feminist footballers, I hope.

Thanks, the documentary looks great.

Do you think it is suitable for my 7 yo girl who loves and plays football? Is there anything disturbing for that age?

Thank you!

Abeona · 16/05/2024 08:55

No, nothing disturbing that I can remember. It might be a bit boring for her, but worth risking. I think there's quite a lot you could talk about with a 7-year-old. About how women who look like boring old grannies actually turn out to be women who have done amazing things. About how women's sport still isn't valued as highly as men's. About the special pleasure there is to be found in sport and female friendships and teamwork. About how women don't have to conform to male expectations.

It might help if before you go you talk to her about what life was like in the 1970s, so she has an idea of what those women were up against. Hope you both enjoy and hope her life is filled with soccer joy!

Thanks! I'll let you know, they're showing it at the cinema here next Tuesday.
