Creative Scotland reviewing funding for porn film

I was reading that Creative Scotland are reconsidering funding to an artist due to the highly explicit nature of their art form. They’re essentially making a porn film, calling it art and underpaying their “performers”

Now maybe I’m just an old fart but I don’t see this as an expression of feminist choice or even sex positive. It’s boring old performative sex for what will end up a predominantly male audience. I know a few young artists who’d consider doing this thinking they’re being cool, sex positive, sex workers and not thinking about long term repercussions and the effects in later life for careers, their kids etc.

Is it just prudishness or is this just bonkers?

It’s difficult to define art. Plenty of it is absolutely shit even if it doesn’t offend people’s sensibilities. And if everyone likes what’s funded then the funder is probably doing a pretty terrible job. Art as a way of exploring controversial topics is important.

But this sort of thing seems so tired. It’s only controversial as an attack on those who don’t like it. It’s not like none of it’s ever been done before. i don’t see, from the website, what seems particularly new or special about what they propose (but I probably wouldn’t about most f the funded projects). If anything, it’s one of the few areas of art (if we are going to see it as that) that can expect to be able to find commercial funding if it wants it, so why spend public money on it. At the same time, I don’t want to see art censored for sexual content.

The underpaying and the possibility of young artists being enticed into something they might regret does concern me, though this sort of project has been done over and over so we could probably find out if artists who do take part in this sort of thing do tend to regret to any great degree.

Edited: In conclusion, I think I raise an eyebrow at it, but providing only a small part of the funder’s budget is spent on this sort of thing, I’d rather be liberal about it than censoring, IYSWIM.

I think it's dodgy and sleazy garbage given vast amounts of the tax payers' cash when many many more quality art and cultural projects are really need cash just now. This is porn and nothing more. It's a complete farce. It's also borderline illegal- there were suggestions about the involvement of children in the original twitter site( now removed funny enough) . I hope Creative Scotland and this shower are hauled over the coals for this and I hope Police Scotland are actually looking into the safeguarding aspect of this. So sick of men and their vile fetishists.

Strong argument, Cancelled. I can see you put a lot of thought in to it.
