A small success - identify as female

7-March-23
I was asked to complete a post half marathon email survey
I emailed the following objection:
"It asked "how do I identify as" - male, female, prefer not to say,
can't remember if there were other options.

I strongly object to this question. I do not IDENTIFY as a female. I AM female.
I DO NOT want to be counted among people with male genitalia who
identify as female."

11-March & 20-March
I chased up a response

21-March
Apology for delay received and informed my feedback would be passed onto the team to discuss for further surveys

21-March
I thank them and state I would like to know outcome

Moved to back of mind knowing I'll be reminded when I do the race next year.

2-Jan
I emailed asking for outcome because I can no longer run the race.

8-Jan
They have just told me that the question will no longer be in the survey.

I will find out from another competitor what they put instead.

I also sent a similar complaint to Women's Running magazine, but the Editor stood by their question and she told me we'd have to agree to disagree.

It would be interesting to know how that Editor thinks a biological category is an identity. But that wording isn't confined to sex and identity.

I rarely fill in the 'ethnic' category partly because the categories are often 'white', 'black' and 'mixed', with sometimes a few other variations.

Ditto with sexual orientation questions: lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender. One of those is not like the others!

For me it completely defeats the purpose - I don't want to answer questions created by people who do not even understand what they are doing.

Especially regarding sexual orientation I do NOT want to be identified as a same s x attracted woman by my local council because I do not trust them with information that is still used against us.

good for you. I have seen two forms recently which asked for which sex you were either male or female, i nearly fell off my chair at the subversivness of it....
