Posted this in chat originally but it's just fallen off the page.

This poor woman's dearh doesn't seem to have made the mainstream news.

Read about her on Twitter, just horrendous.

Has anyone else read about this?

Not meaning to be rude but you’ve literally posted a link to mainstream news about it. The story is everywhere.

It’s horrific though, there are no words. That poor, poor woman, and as for her parents, I can’t begin to imagine what they are going through.

kingofchaos · 08/10/2023 21:51

I haven't seen anything about it on the mainstream news.

My bad possibly for not reading the Fail online.

Anyway.. the story is horrific, her poor family.

can’t really get anymore mainstream than the BBC

Cassieno · 08/10/2023 22:02

It’s on the BBC, Times, Telegraph not sure how much more mainstream?

HelpaFriend85 · 08/10/2023 22:06

What can we say OP, that women and children are the biggest victims of war. That it was a barbaric act? That a child has lost its mother?

kingofchaos · 08/10/2023 22:06

Think what I mean is there was nothing on BBC (tv)news earlier.

@kingofchaos I am not sure they have shown any abductions or aftermaths of them as a. They have to be independently verified and b. Saying it and seeing it is very different. News at ten possibly?

Beamur · 08/10/2023 22:20

Just on the news now. Didn't say she had died, but that they weren't showing footage as it was too distressing.

NumberTheory · 09/10/2023 06:47

Given what’s happening it’s hardly surprising it isn’t a lead piece. It’s a very peripheral story, used just to try and put a relatable face on it because she’s young, female and white. It doesn’t really warrant a significant percentage of the column issues related to the conflict, does it? absolutely horrendous for the woman and the family, but there are over a thousand dead and hundreds more taken prisoner. Why would there be a lot of press about one particular person?

jays · 09/10/2023 07:00

I think because there was actual footage of them parading what seemed to be her dead and semi naked body around in a pick up truck, her leg broken, while they sat on her and men spat on her from the streets … that’s probably why. That her body was identified and it was confirmed to be her by her mother. I think the actual footage was so disturbing and horrific that it made the news. Understandably.

HelpaFriend85 · 09/10/2023 10:52

I agree it’s not that she’s white, it’s because all of this is so barbaric and horrific - her death and treatment of her body show that. That’s why it’s highlighted.

catduckgoose · 09/10/2023 16:51

The footage is horrifying and exactly as @jays describes, and I would advise anyone curious not to seek it out and watch it, it won't do you any good 😞

nettie434 · 10/10/2023 07:46

When something that affects hundreds, if not thousands of people, I think it's often easier to relate to an individual because the scale of things is so horrific. The TV coverage tends to focus on reporters speaking to camera because so much of the video/camera footage is too distressing to broadcast, even with warnings. Other media have fewer compunctions to show this sort of material.

On an individual level, it's so poignant that a person who wanted peace and was opposed to violence was treated this way. She, and all the other people taken as hostages, have not been treated as the civilians they were.

Yes. Amid all the horrors, the thrill these men enjoyed in desecrating their victim’s body, this gleeful display of dehumanising contempt, stood out as a new low.
