Apologies if this has already been posted, I have not seen it:
www.hsph.harvard.edu/news/hsph-in-the-news/homicide-leading-cause-of-death-for-pregnant-women-in-u-s/#:~:text=Homicide%20leading%20cause%20of%20death%20for%20pregnant%20women%20in%20U.S.
How the fuck can this be true and not widely reported, truly horrifying violence against women seems unimportant in a country obsessed with protection of the unborn. Horrifying

Just saw this yesterday. www.wral.com/pregnant-woman-killed-at-amazon-warehouse-baby-survives/20665127/

There are so many gun deaths here in the US that individual murders don't make national headlines. I only know about this issue because I'm a feminist and pay attention to trends that harm women. Gun violence is one of my top priority issues when I go to the ballot box, primarily because so many innocent women and children are harmed by our reckless and lax gun laws. Healthcare, guns, abortion and climate are why I vote Democrat. Too many men have easy access to guns and the Republicans are owned by the gun lobby.

Jaw dropping quote from Delphinium20's link;

''...he's being held on suspicion of manslaughter, which has differences in intent from murder. His criminal record shows a judge ordered in May that he not possess any firearms because of a criminal conviction. Court records say he and the victim already had a young child together...''

My teen DDs say they think it's as easy for them to buy or borrow a gun as it is to score some weed. It's very very easy to get a gun in the US.

Delphinium20 · 10/01/2023 23:36

Not that DD have any plan to get a gun....

Fraser1986 · 11/01/2023 11:32

This is horrifying to say the least. In the interest of accuracy the article does not say homicide is the single leading cause of death for pregnant women but rather a leading cause. (And higher than pregnancy related conditions)

None if this changes the fact that this is an under discussed issue of course.

Thelnebriati · 11/01/2023 11:57

Its semantics; they worded it that way because no one is tracking why women die, and so they have to rule out the possibility there is another unidentified cause.
In reality, it is the main cause of death for pregnant women. Pregnant women in the US are twice as likely to die by homicide than pregnancy-related causes.

Fraser1986 · 11/01/2023 19:41

I don't think it's semantics but rather that the leading cause is heart disease (which is the leading cause of death for women in the US overall) it says of c. 4000 of the deaths in the study, 273 were from violence. Which is of course a tragedy!

Leading cause of death for pregnant women in the U.S. is homicide:

''Women in the US are more likely to be murdered during pregnancy or soon after childbirth than to die from the three leading obstetric causes of maternal mortality (hypertensive disorders, haemorrhage, or sepsis).''
''Reports suggest the US has a higher prevalence of intimate partner violence than other high income countries, including most European countries and Australia.''

UK women benefit from free to access healthcare given by trained midwives & health visitors, who's role includes monitoring for signs of DV. Its one reason I don't support switching to a US style medical system.

howdoesatoastermaketoast · 04/02/2023 14:30

@Fraser1986 whilst the leading cause of death of all women is heart disease most women who die of heart disease are substantially older than the 20-40 age group that encompasses most pregnant women. It has been true for some time I think that the most dangerous issue facing a pregnant woman both in terms of hospitalisation and death is male violence. I was originally told this by my midwife found stats that backed it up so yeah current study check out.

This was reported in the US last year a little bit. I saw articles and, I think, there was a piece on NPR. But it soon died off.

I suspect it hasn’t got wider traction because the numbers are far more significant for Black women, White women are not at much more risk. There’s a lot of racism in what becomes newsworthy here.
