It’s her birthday today....Diane Julie Abbott (born 27 September 1953). She made history as the first black woman to be elected to Parliament, and she is the longest-serving black MP in the House of Commons.

Dianne has come in for a LOT of bullying online and in the press over the years, and much of this is undoubtedly down to racism & misogyny.
Wouldn't it be nice, if those of us with social media accounts gave her a "happy birthday & thank you for blazing the trail" type message today?

You know, just to do something positive and sisterly as feminists.

100% agree. Great lady.

maddy68 · 29/09/2022 10:13

She had a lot of unnecessary criticism partly because of her colour, partly because of her gender and partly because she says some pretty divisive things.
But she is a courageous woman

SplashingMermaidSparkleTail · 29/09/2022 10:13

I think she's amazing 💛

Happy birthday to her. Agree, she is a trailblazer, a pathfinder, a remarkable woman.

Birdy1066 · 29/09/2022 10:19

She’s been constantly targeted by the press in the most dreadful way possible. I think she’s to be admired and respected.
For all those who reviled her and Jeremy Corbyn - they would have done a better job of running the country than the clowns we have now.

ImAvingOops · 29/09/2022 10:22

I don't think that women owe other women their support no matter what. Margaret Thatcher 'blazed a trail' but if she were alive I doubt anyone would be encouraging social media users to thank her for it!
Being sisterly and feminist is in objecting to the online abuse, suffered by all women who don't toe make imposed lines, not in congratulating DA.

ImAvingOops · 29/09/2022 10:22

Make = male.

Babdoc · 29/09/2022 10:25

Hmm. Bit of a hypocrite, condemning Harriet Harman for sending her kids to a private school, then doing the same herself.
And terribly gaffe prone - eg claiming we could employ 10,000 extra police officers on £30 a year each. Not to mention supporting the IRA when younger.
At 69 years old, I think she should be considering retirement, allowing younger people more representation in parliament.

KarmaComma · 29/09/2022 10:25

27th was 2 days ago.

I can't get past her previous comments on the IRA and her pathetic attempts to dodge questions by (bizarrely) comparing changing her views on terrorism to changing her hair. Or her views on private schools. Or her views on chairman Mao. Or her...

Bloodybridget · 30/09/2022 15:42

She's my MP, and I do admire her for her career as a Black female politician, I know she's had to cope with a huge amount of abuse. She has put her foot in it very badly and stupidly a few times, and I'm not in agreement with her support for Corbyn. She also failed to reply when I emailed her about a year ago asking for her position on sex based rights of women.

catandcoffee · 01/10/2022 21:29

Did her and Corbin have a "thing " going on waaaay back or did I image it ?

FleeUpFreeTime · 01/10/2022 22:07

Can’t bear her smugness, I don’t care for her.
