The gushing obituary for a man who murdered the mother of his children

Clymene · 10/05/2022 09:29

I am so angry about this.

This psychotic pig broke into his ex's house in the middle of the night and stabbed her to death while the children were in the house. And then hung himself in the garage.

Why? Because she was in a relationship with another man. Regan Tierney barely gets a mention in this fawning article which makes him sound like a paragon of virtue rather than a man who carried out a brutal murder in a jealous rage.

Those poor children.

I'm going to complain to the Press Association.

Rubbish article - however linking it here will give it a lot more 'hits'. Complain to the news outlet too- biased writing

RoseslnTheHospital · 10/05/2022 09:56

I agree that this article is almost entirely focussed on the murdering ex partner. But, it is an article reporting on his inquest, which necessarily is about the person who is dead and the reasons for their death.

The inquest into Regan Tierney's death is yet to happen, according to this article

www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/news/greater-manchester-news/family-young-mum-stabbed-death-23132203

This article also gives more information about the domestic abuse that Regan endured before ending the relationship.

Penguinevere · 10/05/2022 10:04

That’s disgusting. He murdered the mother of his children, what a monster.

Clymene · 10/05/2022 10:10

But the reason he is dead is because he was an abusive man. Why is that not mentioned in the article?

Daniel's dad, Neil Patten, told the inquest he and his family are still struggling to come to terms with the tragedy, as Daniel had reportedly never threatened to harm himself and usually 'wouldn't hurt a fly.'
Mr Patten described his son as an "amazing" father, who was always very hands on with his and Regan's two children.

This would have been the point to introduce the fact that his father's statements are patently untrue and that Patten was actually not an amazing father who wouldn't hurt a fly but a violent abusive arsehole.

She had been in contact with the police and multiple agencies who hadn't protected her. That is a fact.

A number of opportunities to protect Regan from harm were missed by services including Greater Manchester Police, GP practices, Bolton NHS FT services, Greater Manchester Mental Health Foundation, and Salford Royal NHS Trust.

During their 10-year relationship, Miss Tierney was subject to coercive and controlling behaviour, intimidation, verbal abuse, physical violence and threats, at the hands of Patten.

I completely agree, OP, disgusting article.

TeaStory · 10/05/2022 10:16

It’s not an obituary, it’s a report on his inquest.

As Regan’s inquest hasn’t happened yet, I don’t think newspapers are allowed to report it as fact yet that he murdered her.

KookaburraSit · 10/05/2022 10:19

It's an article about the inquest into his death. But I'm with you that it's disgusting. They always say "he snapped," don't they? And they've said it was out of character, when the article Roses posted shows that it was entirely in character. He was an abusive, controlling piece of shit, and I feel so sorry for that poor woman that she tried to get rid of him, and was murdered for it, and for her poor family having to read this drivel about the poor man who was so heartbroken that his property had decided she'd had enough. They go on about how he was worried he wouldn't see his children, yet the article explicitly says she was still allowing him access. The fucking state of men.

NightmareSlashDelightful · 10/05/2022 10:20

His father's comments did read somewhat lacking in compassion and perspective.

But then if the inquest into Regan's death hasn't happened yet, his father may well have been advised not to make any statements about her or her death.

And it's not an obit, it's an article about an inquest. Totally different thing.

axolotlfloof · 10/05/2022 10:21

An article praising him as an amazing Dad is disgusting.
Didn't a journalist from the Manchester Evening News help. Orchestrate the hate mob march on WPUK meeting?
Inbuilt misogyny?

TheYearOfSmallThings · 10/05/2022 10:24

I tend to agree OP, although it is not an obituary. It should not have been published without editing out the parts which blame his victim for his actions. It is offensive as it stands.

Yes they are. If you read the other article the same journalist has written, the first line says:

The family of a young mum who was stabbed to death by her ex-partner in a murder suicide face a three-wait for her inquest to be heard.

There is no dispute that he murdered her.

Clymene · 10/05/2022 10:34

I hope Regan's family never let his family see those children ever again. Anyone who can describe this monster as an amazing dad should not be anywhere near children.

Regularsizedrudy · 10/05/2022 10:40

I agree op. We are always being forced to view these kinds of events as “tragic” and as a poor man pushed to the edge. The reality is these events (men murdering women) are totally avoidable, but that would require men to confront their own deep rooted sense of entitlement.

I hope you don't mind but I went on a bit of a rant on the comments and copy and pasted some of your comment

I am disgusted
Can anyone advise how we complain?

Another article has appeared on Wales Online
The only comforting part is the comments.

itsmeagainlol · 10/05/2022 11:00

Sickening that he is painted as a good father and devoted to his family. He was abusive and a murderer.

Clymene · 10/05/2022 11:02

No it's fine!

I just sent a complaint to IPSO complaining about inaccuracy (sorry - I was so incensed as well as saying this was an obit, I also said I was going to complain to the Press Association).

www.ipso.co.uk/

I also sent them a report about how victim blaming in press articles about DV murder contributes to the victim's family's distress.

Can you imagine how awful they must feel reading this?

Her sister is in the comments. She is so dignified and eloquent.

I would not be. I honestly feel heartbroken for her. I only hope the outrage and support in the comments brings her some comfort that nobody is buying that BS.

DefiniteTortoise · 10/05/2022 11:30

I saw a recent comedy sketch depicting exactly this phenomenon - example text: 'Devoted father makes difficult decision to send children to Heaven early'. The sketch was horrifyingly not that far from real life in some cases. It's sick that media takes this approach.

Penguinevere · 10/05/2022 11:33

That article would make sense if it was a suicide. As it was a murder suicide they should have left out the loyal sympathetic comments from his family. Obviously his family will have mixed feelings but it’s wrong for the newspaper to publish them like this because it looks like they’re trying to justify the murder.

glamourousindierockandroll · 10/05/2022 11:48

I don't know, I think in some ways it does a good job of highlighting that any man is capable of fatal domestic abuse even "devoted family men" who "wouldn't hurt a fly". It's clear that he wasn't completey off his face on substances either, so can't blame that. It is a news report; it's purpose is to outline what was said about him, not comment on it.

But none of that is true. He wasn't a devoted family man who wouldn't hurt a fly. He exacted a campaign of terror on Regan and then he murdered her.

Women don't need to believe that any man is likely to snap and kill them. They do need to know that leaving an abusive relationship is when you're in most danger.

Her family must be devastated to read their daughter's murderer described in such glowing terms.

How can you read the comments @AskingforaBaskin?

I went to their Facebook page and scrolled down. It's not to far down.

AskingforaBaskin · 10/05/2022 12:01

It might be petty but I hate how they have their pictures side by side.

I can't explain why but it feels like he shouldn't be near her.

KookaburraSit · 10/05/2022 12:09

www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/news/greater-manchester-news/mum-called-police-after-ex-22850202

He'd broken her nose in 2012, had been violent throughout the relationship, and was threating to put her head on a stick eleven days before he murdered her and yet you've got this:

Recording a conclusion of suicide, Coroner Dr Alan Walsh, said he believed Mr Patten had 'snapped' and that his actions on the night of his death were 'completely out of character.'

It's not just his family saying this. It's the bloody professionals painting him as a mild-mannered man. Genuinely disgusting.
