Abortion time limits vs NHS crap

The real problem with abortion in the UK seems to be the five week waiting list.

Imagine finding out you are pregnant at 10 weeks, you assumed your birth control was effective. And then having to wait five weeks. Why?

Sterilisation is pretty difficult in the UK ( even if you have a health issue that risks death for a subsequent pregnancy). Five days would be enough for a good think. Five weeks is cruel.

Not me, I'm postmenopausal. I know a 70 y/o who nearly died may decades ago due to this issue. My DD has a friend who faces this dilemma, there's a new post on here that is similar. Why is the waiting list so long? Why do we do this to women?

It’s crap, but I think the only solution is going private which would be cheaper than raising a child

Private won't take you in UK if you are an ICU risk.

Private makes their money from quick and easy.

It's shit and has been for a long time. I had a termination over ten years ago and had to wait over four weeks.
No woman should have to wait longer than a week if she's made the decision to have a termination IMO. Making women wait for what feels like an interminably long time is cruel and unnecessary.

Maybe the real problem here is 139 posts about US abortion and nobody really gives a fuck about the UK.

Let it roll.

The real reason is that every fucking thing in the NHS has been run into the ground. A decade of austerity, followed by a pandemic, and there are waits for absofuckinglutely everything. Fuck the fucking Tories.

That’s very unfair. Women in the US are about to lose the right to legal abortion completely. That’s why there are so many posts on it at the moment.

By all means campaign to improve timely support here and reduce or abolish waiting lists but you’re not doing the cause any favours by making this comparison. Start a petition and link to it on MN. Write to your MP and encourage others to do the same.

Posters on MN are incredibly supportive of abortion from everything I’ve read here.

It seems a postcode lottery. I'm in Scotland but had a termination last year and it took two days from initial consult with family planning clinic to collecting the pills. Five weeks is indeed awful.

What 5 week wait? I waited all of 3 days. I dont know anyone who's had to wait more than a week

@MissMaple82, just because that was your experience doesn't mean other people haven't had a different one.
Does that help? 🤔

But doesn't that really depend on where you are?

And there are so many worry over US because we can see how hard it will be there, to lose rights completely.

And if you want to talk about specifically to UK, that's fine. But no one is talking about it means there are enough support? Or if not, start the campaign.

It does seem to be a postcode lottery. If you are on the raw end of the deal it is very hard.

If it was a big issue, why you never raised it until now?

There's a big reason why we are talking about what's happening in US now. It's really unfair to say they care fuck all about UK now, just because of it.

Oh do one. You’ve come here for a fight and you’re not going to get it.

Seriously? Like I said, if it was such a big issue here, why not start a campaign? Why now you start it just because we are all talking about US?
And no one said UK woman should die. You said it.

No @AnneLovesGilbert I'm not gonna get a fight because it is not fashionable to support UK women in need.

If it was you would have sort out the thread I referenced and offered support.

The problem with the U.K. is the NHS can’t cope with demand.

the problem with America is they don’t think that women should have the right to body autonomy.

they are two very different issues but both very important.

I agree abortion should have something similar to the 2 week wait in cancer care, it’s an urgent issue that needs dealing with.

I waited 3 days for mine, the wait was horrible - I’d have crumbled if it was 5 weeks. It’s awful and I had no idea.

Waiting for 5 weeks is barbaric. And in areas where this is common it should be dealt with as a matter of urgency.
How common is it though? I waited just a few days 30 years ago, and last year my daughter collected her pills from the GUM clinic (for MA) the day after speaking to the GP.

Of course, experiences vary.
