Not an isolated incident either:

Another man at a refugee camp in Poland was overheard offering work and a room to a 16-year-old girl before authorities intervened.

Plenty more listed

So awful. As if what they are going through isn’t bad enough Sad
12 years isn’t enough. So evil.

Yes. Large numbers of vulnerable women and children will attract predators. It’s awful, and a reason we shouldn’t be normalising putting vulnerable and traumatised people with strangers

This unfortunately would happen anywhere, as a pp said, some people will take advantage of a horrific situation. Poland have taken in 1.5 million refugees in total. What’s the number in the U.K.?

I'm not implying that Poles are any more prone to sexual abuse than anyone else. Actually I'm wondering how the response of the UK police would compare.

The article detailed issues in several countries (generally bordering Ukraine but I'm sure that cases will spread further, Germany's brothels are a particular problem for sex trafficking).

There have been issues in Germany too, as brothels are legal there.

Those poor women. Less than 3 weeks ago they were living perfectly average lives, and now on top of losing their home, leaving their country and male relative behind, of course they get preyed on and attacked by arseholes...

And the ones who stayed are reportedly raped by Russian soldiers. Women always get the worse out of wars.

Fucking hell. Is there nothing men won't exploit? I'm so sick of their shit.

Only today when reading an article about registering accommodation for refugees did I think...wait a minute...some sickos are going to abuse this situation. I'm fucking disappointed it's happened soon.

For the record I wasn't registering. We are in an overcrowded situation anyway in a 2 bed with 3 kids. But in some ways I am surprised it took me so long to realise how this crisis will be exploited. I guess cause I'm not a psychopath rapist it didn't cross my mind straight away.
Humanity is both disappointing and heartening me equally these past weeks

I think the number of genuine helpers is greater than exploiters. I have been touched by the thoughtfulness of Poles.

Wherever there has been war, and refugees, and opportunistic men, there has been a risk to women. I worry that desperately vulnerable women may be groomed and exploited. That's why this sponsorship scheme needs very tight controls.

War always bring rape and on a level that many would ever struggle to comprehend. World War II, Japan had state sanctioned enforced prostitution where women were raped and sometimes raped to death at special comfort stations, thousands of German women were raped by the Russian army and as much as no one wants to hear this allied troops also raped women, not such a great number but serious academic research puts the number in the many thousands.

Yes it was unfair to say equally. There is so so much beautiful good happening in response to the hate. It's just the hate is so big It's hard to fathom this is still happening in this day and age.

Poland has a near total ban on abortion, so they should stamp down especially hard on abusive men imo.

Does anyone know what sort of 'vetting' the UK is planning to do with this new house a refugee scheme?

I asked that on another thread. Haven’t seen anything suggesting that they will be. The potential for harm/exploitation worries me.

I don't think being able to abort a unwanted pregnancy makes being raped any more tolerable to be honest. Or not being able to abort makes it more abhorrent.

I was having this conversation with DH this week. As there's been lots of talk about how easy it is for refugees to enter UK. While I agree that we should offer safe haven and seem to have been slow in reacting so far, this invasion must have been a boon to traffickers and abusers. It is a very murky and unfortunately real aspect of war that people will be exploited. And children being separated from parents, wives being separated from husbands is going to be an ideal situation for people who have a ulterior motive.

I'm sure this poor girls is not the first and sadly she won't be the last.

They've been through so much and I think while the idea of free movement in Europe is wonderful, I do hope countries are monitoring for trafficking and exploitation because I'm sure its been going on since people started to flee the country.

My understanding is that the safeguarding team at your local council will be involved and properties will be inspected.

Women ALWAYS suffer more in these types of situations. Not least because they are often without protection and are highly vulnerable, with no recourse. And predators will be attracted to these situations. It is awful.

Invisible Woman has a whole chapter on the issue of women and girls after disasters and war.

There should be a blanket ban on men who live alone hosting these poor women and children. Of course if this happened the NAMALT brigade would come out in force.

However surely any decent single man who wanted to host would understand the logic and find other ways to support.

As soon as I heard about this scheme I was concerned. Laying aside the awful predators, many people will be attracted to the idea of hosting because of the money on offer. I do not believe local authorities in the U.K. will vet households properly. I shudder to think about what might happen to young children and women.
