Irish Times article about prostitution

"Men are raping women for money". I can't imagine how harrowing the book must be, I found this article very difficult reading. And a really important story to hear because it shows how trauma is behind the actions and "decisions" of many women in the so called sex industry. I'm so sorry Mia, that you went through all you did. Flowers

Evening - we've now moved this over to Feminism Chat - hope that helps.

@LivMumsnet - why?

Wonder why it was moved?

It's true though, I've met in my life all of two prostitutes (totally disparate, different areas and times of my life). BOTH disclosed CSA.

This is not just a 'feminism chat' issue. Really depressing reality. Might get the book to support the exposure of how grim it really is for the women and girls. All whilst the dudes at Amnasty seem to be nailing their colours to the continued exploitation of vulnerable women. They appear (to me anyway) to now be dancing to a different tune than universal human rights - selective and patriarchal.

Glad it was in the IT and Roisin Ingle was involved.

Why keep moving it? It is not really a Feminist issue is it?

Surely it is a societal issue, an all women, all men, all of us issue.

Why put it in a gheto?

The whole point of her book (from what I can see) is that this issue needs light. It needs mainstream attention.

KimikosNightmare · 24/02/2022 00:20

Just agreeing about there being no need to move this. Prostitution is a societal problem, not a feminist problem.

No it doesn't help. Who was it supposed to help?

There's already a couple of sexwork/prostitution threads active at the moment, but just to clarify that in Ireland (and other Nordic Model countries) that women who sell sex aren't decriminalised outright. Women are still committing a crime in Ireland/Sweden etc if they work together.

Women can also be evicted for selling sex (it's illegal for a landlord to rent to a sexworker) and have their children taken off them by Social Services (even if selling sex isn't illegal, it can be seen as "an act of self harm").

Mia Döring's book is one of today's Kindle deals on Amazon, as is Dr Denis Mukwege's The Power of Women: A doctor's journey of hope and healing. £0.99 until midnight.

Here is another recent article on the situation on Nordic Model Ireland from Amnesty International Ireland.

www.amnesty.ie/sex-work-ireland-laws/

“Our research clearly shows that criminalising the purchase of sex is forcing sex workers to take more risks while penalising brothel keeping is preventing sex workers from working together to ensure their own safety.”

The majority of the sex workers interviewed for the research want sex work fully decriminalised in Ireland, including the purchase of sex. They also said that sharing premises with other sex workers helps to increase their safety and limits the potential risk of violence.

The research also shows how the lack of trust in the police and social stigma reinforced by the criminal law are key concerns for sex workers."

Elsewhere, Belgium are looking to decriminalise prostitution. The model NZ and parts of Australia have.
