Feminism: chat

“Team Terf”
Watched with DP and we both thought it was brilliant - very well done, sensitively handling issues but also getting close to the bone with his jokes. Was slightly disappointed in his summing up of the toilets issue, but the story about his friend was beautifully done.

There were a few things that I feel he did really well. I liked his comparison of Caitlin Jenner to women being like Eminem to black people. I also liked how he opened up the dialogue about sex being a fact, and wasn’t afraid of saying that the trans community make up words to win arguments. I also enjoyed his commentary on the #MeToo movement.
However, there were parts that I did not enjoy, or agree with, such as him beating up the woman in the club.
I’m just hoping that these shows and the Nolan podcasts enable us to talk about and debate trans/women’s/human rights without running the risk of being branded a TERF and that being the end of the discussion.

I think he’s one of those comedians who will go anywhere for a laugh, but this Netflix special seemed to be about clarifying for those who found him offensive previously that he’s not “punching down”. I liked that he spelled out what a feminist is and that the definition means he is one. Lots about being black and so the N word was used A LOT!

Dave Chapelle has laid a trap for people who don't actually think that Black lives matter; but that white people should be able to call the police or cancel their livelihood if they are offended by their words.
The closer is that a trans friend of his was harassed into suicide by the trans community for standing up for him on Twitter.
His genius is that he was able to write a set that is funny, and that talks about the human experience in a way so many people can relate to, instead of just putting out a statement spelling it out to you.

Exactly. Most of his jokes leading up to the close were to show how he could make you laugh by going after every single group. He joked about liking to be sexually abused as a boy to beating a woman to Jews being invaders to claiming he should run the women's movement to doing "Asian voice"...obviously he wasn't abused as a boy and liked it, he didn't beat up a woman, etc. but he was saying that all humans can laugh at absurdity, so why can't the Ts?
I thought it brilliant. He stood up for women by saying everyone is alive today because they came out of a woman's body.

He's not my particular cup of tea as a comedian, but yes it's very clear that he's an equal opportunity offender. He "punches lines", as he says, at every single group imaginable. So why does Twitter and the SJW brigade only lose their minds at the trans stuff? It's absolutely maddening.
I also loved his suit

I must admit I stopped watching when he talked about beating up a woman - so it's actually not true? and he's making a point about it being acceptable to joke at the expense of anyone except trans people?
Would love to have this confirmed, I've always loved chappelle

AFAIK, the version he used in his set was the version that person tried to sell to the press.

Oh wow, did people think that Dave Chappelle really goes around beating up women? Of course he doesn't! The majority of anecdotes that stand up comics use have not actually happened in real life. This reminds me of a very funny Katherine Ryan bit where she interrupts the musical Hamilton because of sexism. And lots of comments online were all "that is so rude!" As if she had actually interrupted a Broadway show

He tells jokes. He does not beat up women. This is comedy and what he said is designed to make us laugh / think, and it works for a lot of people - me included.
Comedy should have no boundaries in my opinion. His sticks and stones special was excellent too.
