Noel Clarke sexual harassment allegations, suspended by BAFTA

www.theguardian.com/culture/2021/apr/29/actor-noel-clarke-accused-of-groping-harassment-and-bullying-by-20-women

🤬🤬🤬

Especially galling that BAFTA was seemingly made aware of this before giving him his very recent honour. I watched his acceptance speech and found it really moving in terms of celebrating a working class black man’s success in a historically white industry. Turns out he’s an (alleged) sexual abuser. Fucking great.

It was a difficult article to read Mayorquimby2 and so upsetting, but you are right, it is an excellent piece of journalism.

TartrazineCustard · 30/04/2021 12:38

It was awful reading through that list of incidents. This is such a problem with sexual abuse - you need several people corroborating the behaviour before you can get past he said/she said. When MeToo was peaking on social media, I completely got what some people were worrying about when "whisper networks" started pointing the finger at all sort of men, because I do believe in due process. But it's so not cut and dried when it comes to sexual assault. There never seems to be due process for 1, 2, or 3 women, which is why the whisper networks get established in the first place.

And good on Michaela Cole for pushing this story out there and commenting on it. She's a stunning talent, and I have so much respect for her.

She is fantastic.

Mayorquimby2 · 30/04/2021 12:49

Really shows the calculated nature of people like this.

I'm not saying being inappropriate with every woman you meet is somehow more commendable, but the way he targets young actors, people in positions lower down the food chain and builds in plausible deniability by making the assaults part of the creative process to give himself that out is so fucking calculated.
The nude scenes, the rehearsals, the extras. If only one person spoke out about this out would be so really dismissed as then misunderstanding the industry and how he wasn't doing this for personal gratification it's part of being a director etc.

Even if you thought it was dodgy you'd know that it would be in that "well I don't like it but I can't prove it" grey area. It's really chilling that his mind works that way.

jay55 · 30/04/2021 12:51

The guardian article was a sheer shopping list of abuse. He's clearly got patterns he repeats and takes advantage of any opportunity that comes up.
Well done to those women for speaking up, and their friends who substantiated their stories.

TofuDelights · 30/04/2021 12:53

Ah. I've been working my way through the episodes of Who Do You Think You Are and put his episode on to watch last night. I thought there was a problem with the iPlayer as it wasn't working, and saw this thread today. That Guardian article was just horrible to read. Yet another man...

Seconding Tom Hanks, Patrick Stewart and Dave Grohl. And let's not forget the wonderful Alan Rickman, RIP. Flowers

Sky halts Noel Clarke's involvement in any future productions following sexual harassment claims
BAFTA has described the allegations against the actor as "abhorrent" and "extremely serious".

@toocold54

I know that Adam Deacon (acted in Kidulthood and Adulthood) has accused Noel of bullying and ruining his career for years, in fact I watched on insta as he gradually had a complete meltdown about it.

Didn’t Adam Deacon get arrested for it though as he threatened to kill Noel’s kids?

Well that is a bit extreme to say the least. Sounds like MH problems.
SunsetBeetch · 30/04/2021 12:58

[quote Pinkearedcow]I have just finished reading the Guardian article. I am really shocked to be honest, although I know I shouldn't be. The women who have spoken out are brilliant, he could have gone on and on doing this if they hadn't.

Nice tweet from Michaela Coel showing her support.

Love this very talented lady.

ancientgran · 30/04/2021 13:00

@froggygoneacourting

He's always been sleazy. I met him years ago when I was trying to be an actor and he was perving about Freema Agyman, and I made a joke and he turned it into this whole thing about watching us have sex. Ick ick ick.

Going back to Adam Deacon, he has bipolar disorder and experienced cannabis-induced psychosis and was Sectioned. He was harassing Noel over Twitter and sending a large number of abusive tweets based on what he claimed (which now sounds very plausible) was Noel bullying him and sabotaging his career. But it was a third party who made what was perceived as a death threat to Noel's children (tweeted a photo of the children alongside a gun image).

Incidentally, David Tennant and Colin Firth are two actors I've worked with who no one has a bad word to say about. I know a couple of producers who had to field semi diva-ish requests from DT's wife but he himself has a rep for being genuinely lovely. I've heard stories about Patrick Stewart being a bit up himself but certainly nothing abusive.

Sad about Adam Deacon, bipolar and cannabis induced psychosis can both be horrific. A lovely friend of my son's was sectioned with cannabis induced psychosis, fortunately he recovered, broke the habit and has a good job and a lovely partner. Not everyone is so lucky.

Linking MH and David Tennant, have you ever seen Takin over the Asylum? Quite early in his career I think but brilliant.

Mayorquimby2 · 30/04/2021 13:04

Presumably that means they still air things shot already . I think they have a new series of his show bulletproof wrapped.

What's the general consensus on the best course of action in those circumstances?
Just can the whole thing as no matter how unfair it is on the other actors you can't promote and treat sometime like that as a star?
Or that the work is already done and many other people like less recognized actors will be relying on the show airing to further their career?

I think I'd have to go with the first option even though it punishes so many people who are not responsible for his abuse. It's really the only way that you can maintain that there's consequences for his actions.

BlooperReel · 30/04/2021 13:05

Anyone seen him in Kidulthood? He was playing himself. I've hear horrid stuff about him for years, just suprised it took this long to come out. Shame on BAFTA for not pulling the award as soon as they got wind of this.

kesstrel · 30/04/2021 13:05

It's worth remembering that sociopathic traits and good acting ability often go together. Such people often pop up in roles like church leader, politician, etc ..... why not actors?

NEVERENDINGST0RY · 30/04/2021 13:10

DH and I like to play, "which man would you actually be surprised about at this point". It's a really fucking short list. He has David Tennant and I'm keeping Patrick Stewart.

we play this!!! ive got sir david attenborough.

NanuNanuM · 30/04/2021 13:22

I wonder if he will take responsibility for his actions or do the "if they feel I offended them, I apologise" bullshit?

PearPickingPorky · 30/04/2021 13:25

Michaela Coel seems an incredibly smart, classy woman. Pleased to see what she's said.

TheWeeDonkey · 30/04/2021 13:27

I was watching this on the news this morning and his response to this was so obnoxious. "In a 20-year career, I have put inclusivity and diversity at the forefront of my work and never had a complaint made against me."

Something about it reminded me of Harvey Winestein, "you can't accouse me, look at all the good things I do" What a creep.

VladmirsPoutine · 30/04/2021 14:00

The victim blaming around this is particularly galling i.e. why did they wait till now to say it. And surely if they were uncomfortable they should have raised it at the time. I think sexual assault and abuse even were it caught on camera wouldn't be enough for those with a vested interest in ignoring women. Even people going so far as to say this sort of thing comes with the territory.

RedDogsBeg · 30/04/2021 14:05

A very difficult article to read and full marks to the Guardian for investigating this, writing about and publishing it. The article is exceptionally well done, brutal and forensic, reminiscent of Ronan Farrow's take down of Harvey Weinstein.

Horrific for all those women.

PearPickingPorky · 30/04/2021 14:05

And "never had a complaint made against me" - what does that mean? Given that we now know complaints have been made. Often. So does he mean the complaints were never officially recorded? Never acknowledged? Never mattered? Never were brought to his attention?

All of those options very much tell their own story.

southeastdweller · 30/04/2021 14:07

So, Ashley Walters, who has known and worked with him for years, says the stories were a ‘shock’ Hmm

@MrsTerryPratchett

Another one.

DH and I like to play, "which man would you actually be surprised about at this point". It's a really fucking short list.

He has David Tennant and I'm keeping Patrick Stewart.

Patrick Stewart has a link to my home town and often gets involved with community stuff. Everyone I know who has met him says he’s utterly charming so I would be incredibly surprised if he was a perv
Ghislainedefeligonde · 30/04/2021 14:15

Ugh how awful for those woman. The fact that he has written explicit sex scenes for him to act in is super creepy too. I wonder how common this is given how much gratuitous sex / nudity there seems to be in tv and film nowadays Envy (vom not envy)

colouringindoors · 30/04/2021 14:15

Anyway, we were chatting about the show i was on and she laughed and said she'd just flown back with Noel Clarke. He's sat in first class, his wife and three kids flew coach. Says it all.

more victims I suspect...

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 30/04/2021 14:20

The thing that is bothering me most is that for him to have got away with it for so long on so industrial a scale it must have been accepted part of the culture. So not just him. Who else has been doing this, who else has been enabling and turning a blind eye?
