Bafta was placed in a really tricky place here.
They had announced the winner of this award, but NC had not received it yet.
Then they received allegations via an intermediary, with no names or verifiable details.
They had no legal grounds to suspend the award.
I fully understand why this story has come up now, imagine your abuser getting honoured with an outstanding contribution. It could easily prompt someone to speak up.
Then after speaking up with bafta they approached The Guardian. Probably initially in the same way via intermediaries but the story couldn’t go to press without names and do they bravely stepped forward. Knowing there were other would have helped.
