Noel Clarke sexual harassment allegations, suspended by BAFTA

🤬🤬🤬

Especially galling that BAFTA was seemingly made aware of this before giving him his very recent honour. I watched his acceptance speech and found it really moving in terms of celebrating a working class black man’s success in a historically white industry. Turns out he’s an (alleged) sexual abuser. Fucking great.

Obviously it’s deeply disgusting behaviour. But why would an intelligent successful person think they could get away with it?

He did get away with it. For years.

tofuschnitzel · 30/04/2021 18:31

@alexdgr8

i had no idea who this was, the name meant nothing to me. but when i saw the face i did recognise it. seemed a nice face but, he always seemed to be making kind of twisted expressions with his mouth, kind of curled lip, which looked horrible. makes the face look so ugly. and not just in one character. i remember wondering why he did it. could this be a form of psychological leakage, ie the true character peeping through the pleasant exterior. an unconscious tic ?
I'd like to think that people have more intelligence than this. There is no such thing as "psychological leakage". The problem with people who do awful things is that they look exactly the same as everyone else. No one can tell who is good and who is evil just by looking at them.
bonfireheart · 30/04/2021 18:32

@Alonim because he WAS able to get away with it. Cos he got a rush from the power of being a predator.
Don't make excuses for him, being "ill or on drugs".

AgeLikeWine · 30/04/2021 18:33

I had never heard of Noel Clarke before today, so I come at this case without preconceptions about him.

It’s very concerning that he appears to have been tried & convicted by media & social media in a few hours. If he has committed serious offences, he must face the consequences of his actions, but whatever he is alleged to have done, he deserves due process and is entitled to the presumption of innocence.

We are getting into very, very dangerous territory when a person’s life and career can be summarily destroyed by allegations which are yet to be substantiated.

bonfireheart · 30/04/2021 18:35

They are not unsubstantiated hearsay. The Guardian has spoken to the women, their partners and in some cases their therapists. They've seen texts, emails etc.

Tell me what would the women get from having their photos and names out there to lie about him???

DuncinToffee · 30/04/2021 18:36

I have seen the 'innocent until proven guilty' mentioned a lot by people wanting to watch the final episode of his ITV series.

20 women (so far)

PrincessScarlett · 30/04/2021 18:36

ITV news has just shown a bit of that you tube clip with NC demonstrating what JB did. I wonder if JB is quaking in his boots?!

If this has all been a big understanding his career will be fine.

The thing is, IT AIN’T.

Alonim · 30/04/2021 18:36

Gosh. I’m really not making excuses for him.

I’m trying to get my head round how it’s at all possible for someone to behave like this. Where does this behaviour come from?

chicklingpixies · 30/04/2021 18:36

Yes they did. And they also were already established enough to not have to work with him again. The film industry is a horribly unboundaried place to work and there are plenty of NCs about.

FrangipaniDeLaSqueegeeMop · 30/04/2021 18:37

What about the e 20 women people here are happy to presume are liars - where's their presumption of innocence.

What will it actually fucking take to hold predatory men to account.

Oh and BTW this patriarchal culture that seems to thrive everywhere whereby MN can behave illegally towards women as often as they feel, is enabled and propped up by those who assume a man accused by 20 women may be innocent and the poor lamb deserves due process.

Tell me - if 20 homeowners had accused him of burglary...or if 20 men had accused him of rape...would you believe he's innocent until proven guilty?

LilacTwine · 30/04/2021 18:37

AgeLikeWine read *DentonFringeArnottsWaistcoat"s excellent post above.

Women are never believed. It's always a battle to get any kind of justice. What we are seeing here are many accounts of similar behaviour by one man, backed up with photos and testimonies. Have your read the article? Did you watch the video?

The people in "dangerous territory" are the women he had power over, and who will now have their characters questioned and their reputations attacked by his lawyers.

If you don't abuse people, you aren't in dangerous territory.

Only if you are.

TheWeeDonkeyFella · 30/04/2021 18:38

@Roussette

I can't believe Barrowman has been allowed to behave like that

Nor me. Vile

I recall years ago reading an interview with a actress and she was talking about working with Barrowman and how 'funny and naughty' he was on set, often standing next to someone who thought they were having a normal conversation with him until noticing he was stood with his penis exposed - his well known favourite prank apparently.

I didn't understand why that was supposedly funny and put me right off watching him in anything after reading that.

Beat not to speculate on what motivates sexual predators. Because it doesn't really matter why they do it, just that they DO do it
bonfireheart · 30/04/2021 18:39

The Guardian has done a follow up piece
www.theguardian.com/culture/2021/apr/30/how-bafta-spent-two-weeks-grappling-with-noel-clarke-dilemma?CMP=Share_AndroidApp_Other

Quite a conspiracy going on for a while if these women are lying as some on here believe...

I believe everyone is innocent until proved guilty, that's how it works.
MrsRobinsonsHandprints · 30/04/2021 18:41

@Alonim

Do you think he was/is psychologically ill? Why would someone ruin their career by doing this?

Obviously it’s deeply disgusting behaviour. But why would an intelligent successful person think they could get away with it?

Would he be taking drugs and not realise what he was doing?

Please don't. You can not justify his behaviour by citing mental health issues, it does so much disservice to so many
bonfireheart · 30/04/2021 18:42

You know in sexual allegations there rarely is any evidence, so what would posters like to see as evidence? And does no evidence = innocent?

HumousWhereTheHeartIs · 30/04/2021 18:42

@AgeLikeWine We should be grateful to the media for exposing these things when they are not dealt with by powerful companies or the authorities. All the sex scandals of recent years from R Kelly to Jimmy Saville, Kevin Spacey and Harvey Weinstein have been broken by media organisations.

FrangipaniDeLaSqueegeeMop · 30/04/2021 18:43

@ancientgran even when 99% of sexual predators get away with it, you think it's a fair shout to say "innocent til proven guilty"?

Oversize · 30/04/2021 18:44

@Numnumcookie

Always hated this prick and could never explain why. It's the strongest reaction I've ever had against a celebrity I do not know and have no evidence against. Just thought he was bad news. I'm not surprised in the slightest.
Me too. Just a visceral dislike.
HumousWhereTheHeartIs · 30/04/2021 18:44

But the media get it wrong too like they did with Cliff Richard - although the BBC was tipped off by the cops directly on that one

FrangipaniDeLaSqueegeeMop · 30/04/2021 18:44

I really could have named by person the resident misogynists popping on the thread to call 99% of rape victims liars

DentonsFringeArnottsWaistcoat · 30/04/2021 18:44

We are getting into very, very dangerous territory when a person’s life and career can be summarily destroyed by allegations which are yet to be substantiated
No.
We are already in very, very dangerous territory when twenty women’s lives and careers may already have been destroyed by verbal abuse, bullying and sexual harassment, perpetrated by just one, powerful, male individual, but the only way for them to get anyone to do anything about it is to find a journalist willing, and brave enough, to publish their allegations.
Be honest, with us and yourself, if this story hadn’t have broken today, how many more women and how many more years do you actually think it would have taken before anyone took any notice and believed any of them?
