Noel Clarke sexual harassment allegations, suspended by BAFTA

www.theguardian.com/culture/2021/apr/29/actor-noel-clarke-accused-of-groping-harassment-and-bullying-by-20-women

🤬🤬🤬

Especially galling that BAFTA was seemingly made aware of this before giving him his very recent honour. I watched his acceptance speech and found it really moving in terms of celebrating a working class black man’s success in a historically white industry. Turns out he’s an (alleged) sexual abuser. Fucking great.

I know a couple of producers who had to field semi diva-ish requests from DT's wife

Funny you should say that. I was looking at her Insta recently and was not impressed.

FrangipaniDeLaSqueegeeMop · 30/04/2021 17:45

He's just denied allegations but says he's sorry and will seek help for his problem...if he's innocent then why is he apologising and seeking help, and for what? Hmm

BernardBlackMissesLangCleg · 30/04/2021 17:45

I couldn't make it all the way through that video of NC with the mic. urgh

and yes, the Guardian article had me picking up my chin from the floor. that constant stream of making women's working environment so untenable that they have to leave their industry, or curtail what jobs they do.

and thinking an apology is going to cover that

what an arsehole

Roussette · 30/04/2021 17:46

To me in that video, it was the way he revelled in talking about JB and what he is doing in such a sleazy way, he just kept on and on and would not let it drop I'm just amazed at the women sat there laughing and OKing this sort of stuff.
That to me was shocking

FrangipaniDeLaSqueegeeMop · 30/04/2021 17:46

@DentonsFringeArnottsWaistcoat

I’m not saying he’s innocent but whatever happened to innocent until proven guilty I’ll tell you what happened, Bill Cosby and Harvey Weinstein happened. Now, plenty of very brave women are going to stand up and not take that shit anymore. And you think twenty women all telling basically the same story might mean there’s some truth to it? Pffft.
Exactly. A culture of serious sexual misconduct has been uncovered in the entertainment industry several times over the last few years. So of course when more allegations about one person come to light, they should be taken seriously
Pinkearedcow · 30/04/2021 17:47

I'm ignoring timeisavirtue. Clearly here to argue but maybe if we don't pay any attention he'll bugger off

Yeah, I kept typing oput responses, but then deleting them. Not worth it.

Unsure33 · 30/04/2021 17:48

@DentonsFringeArnottsWaistcoat

Yes but that proves a point . You go to court and then people end up in jail.

That’s the system that needs improvement .

You should be able to report through the correct channels and action and action should be taken .

I am sorry I still feel trial by media is wrong .

If this comes to court the jurors will have read everything in the papers and in some cases that could mean a trial will collapse .

Then the guilty person would get away with it .

Horehound · 30/04/2021 17:49

I've not read the full thread but k see it's all kicking off with John barrowman now after a video of NC impersonating John did on set. (Got his knob out and rested it on a woman's shoulder in the make up room)

Pota2 · 30/04/2021 17:49

@MrsRobinsonsHandprints

That clip is , I don't have the words. It's being used to make NC look bad but it seems like he can't believe what JB gets away with.
Probably because he wishes he could get away with it too. He’s hardly critical of him and shows zero empathy for the women. The women are laughing too but look uncomfortable and NC acting it all out is grim. I can’t imagine being at work and a colleague slapping me with his penis. I’d be shaken to the core.
Unsure33 · 30/04/2021 17:50

@FrangipaniDeLaSqueegeeMop

No one is saying it should not be taken seriously . Through the right channels .

Skiptheheartsandflowers · 30/04/2021 17:50

@Thewiseoneincognito

No clue who he is but a quick google image search and he looks like an arrogant smug tw@t.
20 women's testimonies is pretty damning - can we base our judgement on that and not this 'in his photos he looks like a wrong un' crap please? Because I don't see how that's different to judging women for what they wear. It's the actual reporting and words of the victims we should pay attention to.
Horehound · 30/04/2021 17:50

Oh I see it has been mentioned. Apologies.

PronounssheRa · 30/04/2021 17:50

To be fair to Ashley Walter's his statement also says that he can't ignore the accusations and that sexual abuse and harassment has no place in the industry.

For someone who has been friends with Clarke for many years, Ashley statement is support for the women, not for Clarke.

I also think this is the tip of the iceberg.

As for Barrowman, grim just grim.

I agree, but however bad his behaviour was in that video it's nothing compared to what Barrowman was doing. The visual of the mic on the ladies shoulder was sickening I can't believe Barrowman has been allowed to behave like that.
Sweetpeasaremadeforbees · 30/04/2021 17:52

I always thought NC seemed to have some kind of pent up anger or aggression in interviews but assumed it was to do with his anger about racism in the entertainment industry. I certainly didn't suspect this. But then I've only ever seen him in DW so maybe that that coloured my view of him.

But I've very glad that so far everyone has said that DT is lovely.

Roussette · 30/04/2021 17:52

I would wipe the floor with anyone who tried that. But I'm old and have far more confidence that I used to have.

FrangipaniDeLaSqueegeeMop · 30/04/2021 17:53

20 women coming forward probably means there are some truth to it but at this point they are allegations.

And this, ladies and gentlemen, is patriarchy in action.

One accused man is assumed innocent and the default of the TWENTY women is passed of as 'meh, it could be true, maybe'.

I don't buy the whole 'innocent until proven guilty' when it comes to sex crimes considering an unacceptable 99% of sexual predators are never convicted. Why the hell should women accept the 'innocent til proven guilty' crap when nearly all woman experience sexual harassment?

Tell me @Timeisavirtue how many women must come forward about a man before you begin to believe them?

Butchyrestingface · 30/04/2021 17:53

So the latest is he's deeply sorry and seeking professional help but he didn't do it.

¯\(ツ)/¯

Roussette · 30/04/2021 17:53

Nor me. Vile

@Unsure33 what channels would those be? The Criminal Justice system? You know, the one that lets down literally 99% of victims? The one that, even if you have the good fortune to have your abuser charged - which takes a ridiculously high standard of evidence and is not likely to happen even if you have DNA evidence, cuts, bruises and a signed confession - you will end up in a court room being called a liar by an expensive lawyer, or having your knickers held up as proof you are 'sexual', or cross examined so brutally to the point you're having a nervous breakdown...is that the channel you're talking about?

Imagine being one of these 20 women - and there will be more - watching their abuser being lauded and praised and decorated with accolades and awards. You really object them taking steps to stop him using this power to abuse other women. Really?

If anyone has a problem with this approach, take it up with the shitty justice system. Or men. But not victims.

CarmelBeach · 30/04/2021 17:58

It seems to me that it's a grim industry

Like Phoebe WB showing her arsehole

I wonder how many actors just leave the business because that culture just isn't for them.

LilacTwine · 30/04/2021 17:58

If he's going to run this as Australians are he'll either check himself into a mental health unit (alleged Parliament house rapist) 'take some time off to reflect' (Attorney General accused of rape) or declare himself suffering from undiagnosed ADHD (alleged upskirting MP, also alleged of stalking, harrassment of women).

These all depended on silence for so long and now that it's gone & they know they will be believed we are going to see no end of this.

There are posters on here willing to disbelieve the 12 women who made complaints about Alex Salmond.
SmokedDuck · 30/04/2021 18:04

@Radio4Rocks

It's ridiculous to take off the final episode of Viewpoint tonight. So unfair on the other actors.

Complete over reaction.

If he did what the women said he did his career is over - why punish the other actors as well?

I don't really like that sort of thing either. It's mainly about being seen to do something, I suspect.

On the other hand if they didn't, people would complain.
