I haven't had it but a friend did.
From what she said it was quite solution focussed and not too heavy.

I know it's hard but please try not to worry about it. It helped my friend enormously

Oh Naily it's fine honestly. I have had CBT. They just let you talk, teach you coping techniques etc it got rid of my anxiety and agraphobia I'm not even sure how it worked but it did.

MargaretMountford · 09/03/2009 17:29

all these things are confidential

hello nailpolish

a counsellor can't help fix your dad, job or someone else's pants but they can help you to change your reaction to things (that's what CBT is) - ask them to explain this to you, what it is you'll be doing. cry if you like, but do go, it's a Good Thing, xxxx

Saggarmakersbottomknocker · 09/03/2009 17:33

Hope it goes OK nailpolish.

Naily, My therapist second time round was a man and he was absolutely brilliant.

Tomorrow all that will happen is he will ask you questions. He will probably take a brief history from you and ask what it is that makes you feel anxious.
The next appt will be learning the coping strategies and exercises.

You may find that your quite emotional and physically worn after the appt tomorrow.
CBT can be hard work but the benefits are worth it

MaryQueenofArkansas · 09/03/2009 17:44

Nailpolish, CBT can be wonderful - it has really helped my dh .
Counsellors expect clients to be anxious and initially very upset, it goes with the job. They always have a mahoosive box of tissues to hand.
As bundle says - CBT does not aim to remove the husband, or the pants, or the anxieties - but it helps you tame them.
Best of luck tomorrow, hope it goes very well. Because it is the first session, you are getting to know each other, so don't be deterred if it's not immediately helpful.

BoysAreLikeDogs · 09/03/2009 17:47

Naily, I had a form of CBT a few years ago - I cried a LOT, and the therapist taught me how to think about things in a safe way (does that make sense?)using a form of 'scaffolding' around my thoughts. I sound like a flake, but it helped me tremendously

Good luck

Nabster · 09/03/2009 17:57

I hope it goes well for you. I have bought the CBT bookk for dummies but have barely had time to open it.

expatinscotland · 09/03/2009 18:01

I'm having CBT right now for my anxiety, in addition to my Effexor-75mg.

Please don't be worried about crying, especially at the first appointment.

If you're anything like me, you've been bottling it up, too.

Just let it all hang out! So often, as my counsellor pointed out, we're not kind to ourselves. In forgiving ourselves for being anxious or depressed rather than in the sense of pampering ourselves with nice baths and manicures, IYKWIM.

I hope you feel better soon.

Beetroot · 09/03/2009 18:15

nailpolish - Good luck.
It will be fine and interesting and sometimes hard but you will be cared for by your therapist.

take care

Bubble99 · 09/03/2009 21:20

Naily. I hope this goes well for you.

As expat has said, let it all hang out and don't worry about crying - it helps to get all of the bad stuff out.

naily was thinking about you today, how did it go?

MargaretMountford · 10/03/2009 17:06

was it ok ? was the therapist nice ?

nailpolish · 10/03/2009 17:11

he is nice
he thinks i have a mountain of stress and he wants me to initially go for 6 weekly sessions
its very much led by me - which scares me a bit - like he asked me what i want to get out of it and i was hoping he would tell me instead of me telling him!
but then i suppose thast the hardwork bit

he didnt call it CBT though he called it psychotherapy

he said "hello my name is colin" and i started ccrying

OP posts:
nailpolish · 10/03/2009 17:14

i dont think i got much out of it but then i suppose that was the initial one

i got stuff off my chest
