Lump behind ear

Mummyto2123 · 02/10/2024 20:31

I'm really hoping someone can calm me down. Last weekend I was feeling behind my ears and found what feels like bone under the mastoid. On the other side it's just flat. My mind has went to cancer. I'm reading about lymphoma now ans going out of my mind

It’s quite likely an enlarged lymph node. Your GP will reassure you I’m sure x

Mummyto2123 · 05/10/2024 15:20

Unfortunately my gp is a nightmare to get a hold of. My husband said its probably being there for a long time and I've just never noticed it. I just can't help but fear the worst

The lymph node behind one of my ears is constantly enlarged (I have a hyperactive immune system which reacts to many things in a rather dramatic fashion). Yesterday I was bitten by a bug in the garden and today the nodes behind both ears are enlarged and there's a lump about halfway down the right side of my neck. It's normal and nothing to worry about. Your lymph nodes provide defence against infection so can be enlarged when you've had a virus or an allergic reaction to something or even if you've been stressed. You would feel unwell if you had lymphoma (fever, fatigue, pain, swelling in multiple lymph nodes etc).

I can't help but think the worst. Managed to go a day without worrying now I'm back to crying, can't focus on anything and feeling so depressed . My gp is a nightmare to get a hold of so I'm not even sure when I would get an appointment. My husband is getting annoyed with me because he said we've been here so many times

I had a swollen lymph node behind my ear for ages and it was also causing a weird ache in the back of my head..was worried but Dr not concerned. Said it would go eventually and it did. I've also got a really bony lump on the same side, but not on the other. I think that's just completely normal bone structure? If yours feels hard and bony it's probably just that ?

TheLittleOldWomanWhoShrinks · 10/10/2024 11:07

I have a permanent small hard lump on one side of my face, by the top of my ear. I was quite worried too when I first noticed it. My GP referred me to ENT and I had an ultrasound which found only a small, probably permanently enlarged lymph node. I go every 6 months-year for a check-up (must go again actually) but nothing changes.

longtompot · 10/10/2024 11:30

I've had a lump there and it was just a boil. I kept poking it which makes it get bigger, and sorer, so I made myself leave it and it eventually went. I hope it's something similar for you

Mummyto2123 · 10/10/2024 12:52

It definitely feels like bone but I'm worried because I can't feel it on the other side

My daughter had this. I also panicked. She was referred straight away to a consultant and she had bloods done. They said it's just a node that's reacted then not gone down. Hers is still there a year later. Don't worry, it's most likely nothing. Just make an appointment and find out.

If it feels like bone surely it's just...bone ?! I think it's really normal to have one lump (mastoid?) more boney than the other, it's just that you've obviously only just felt them. I have one more boney bit, never been a problem.

Grandmasswagbag · 11/10/2024 22:14

Glands don't feel like bone, they are slightly softer.

Moon30 · 11/10/2024 22:38

I have a moveable lump behind my right ear, on the bone and the other side is flat with no lump. It's been there for as long as I can remember so it's not something I'm concerned about. I also currently have a lump along the fold behind my left ear, it comes and goes and I've also had the same lump along the fold of my right ear too, I assume it's a swollen lymph node as it's been happening for years and I'm also diagnosed with ME which can sometimes cause raised lymph nodes so I put it down to that. However if I was to get a new bump I would probably get checked over to be safe. Try not to worry though, it's likely to be a lymph node

Mummyto2123 · 12/10/2024 10:29

It's under the mastoid bone which is why I'm worrying. It weird because when I tense the muscles there I can't feel it

I feel for you. I tend not to share my health worries with my husband as he too gets frustrated with me. Thinks "here we go again".

Are you quite sure it's not a gland? I have a permanently enlarged gland on my neck which has stressed me out in the past. It came up when I was unwell years ago and never went back down. This can happen.

Can you post a pic up (not necessarily you!) pointing to where it is so I can see if I have the same?

Mummyto2123 · 14/10/2024 09:47

It's just here so like behind the mastoid.

Lovie, in the almost two weeks since you first posted about this you could have got the reassurance you need from your GP. No one on here can diagnose you or give you any definitive answer other than a medical professional.

So sorry it took me so long to reply! I think it's normal, I think I have these lumps too, and one more prominent on one side. I still think you should visit docs though, to be on safe side... have you done so? Xx

Mummyto2123 · 16/10/2024 21:09

I tried to call my gp this morning and the queue was full. My husband said there's no need for me to see my gp but I definitely think I need to for reassurance

Has it gone down? Look, it doesn't sound urgent, so don't panic about seeing at GP immediately, just try to book one when you can and take it from there. Surely you can get an appointment in a couple of weeks? They can't be that awful? Xx

Enough4me · 16/10/2024 23:34

I have had one of those solid lumps behind my right ear for more than 30 years, since having chicken pox. It has not been a problem.

I think a trip to the GP for a check would be good and potentially reassuring, but the anxiety is the thing you need some support with In the longer term.

Mummyto2123 · 20/10/2024 10:31

I did eventually get through to my gp but the only appointment I could get was for 2 weeks away. I'm going to phone first thing in the morning to get a same day appointment hopefully if I can get through

Why didn't you take the appointment in two weeks?

You can't be that worried if you have refused an offered appointment.

That's good. I hope you'll get some answers.

I'm sorry, it sounded like you were only prepared to take an immediate appointment.
Apologies.

Mummyto2123 · 23/10/2024 14:50

I did thanks. The gp said it's a lymph node. If I'm still worried in 4 weeks I can go back but if it doesn't bother me I can leave it
