2023/24 SAD thread | Mumsnet

Hi again, I’m back for another year ☹️. I can’t see that anyone has started a SAD thread yet but today seems to be the day that it’s really kicking in...

Sunny here. Have family staying so off to a seaside town.

Nothing better than a cold, sunny walk alongside the seaside 😍

PamperGoals2024 · 11/10/2024 21:12

Well despite a sunny day we spent the whole afternoon in a restaurant. Should have got there earlier!

Rain tomorrow so taking the family to garden centres.

Idratherbepaddleboarding · 12/10/2024 12:28

Oh no, how come? Just because it took a long time to get your food? It was forecast rain here but it’s another gorgeous day. I think October has been my favourite month so far!

No just got there late!

Had the biggest downpour for an hour today but rest of day was okay. We walked round a wooded lake which was nice.

Back to some stressful life admin stuff for the rest of the evening.

lyingonthebeach · 13/10/2024 09:16

Today I accepted that this is winter; it's cold and its dark so early 😫

Idratherbepaddleboarding · 13/10/2024 10:24

@PamperGoals2024 oh no!

I spoke too soon yesterday and it turned freezing. We even had 2 hail storms 🥶. I went to a wedding night so in a tiny dress and nearly froze to death!

It is cold today!!! No sun but it's not too dark, I want to try and get for a walk later

Idratherbepaddleboarding · 13/10/2024 12:54

@itwasnevermine yes it’s bloody freezing! Just got back from my dog walk and it wa cold and grey but pleasant enough in my big coat. My dog loves the cold weather and watching him enjoy himself makes it a bit better.

Last outdoor swim of the year but the pool was heated and the sun came out so it was glorious.

robinsrace · 13/10/2024 19:33

Hope everyone is managing okay!

It hit me a bit today as I didn't have anything planned so even though the weather was lovely I felt a bit low and the dark seemed to close in so fast.

Got myself out for a run and did some yoga which really helped. Going to try and go to a yoga class tomorrow evening to try and keep my mood stable.

Finding myself overthinking things a bit the last week or two. Our lovely little dog has developed a "hop" sometimes when he walks. Vet suspects luxating patella. He's on a pain med trial, has a referral for hydrotherapy and will likely have a scan soon to see how bad it is and if surgery may be needed soon. He's a rescue, lots of behavioural challenges when he came to us (bite history, resource guarding, stealing items, highly anxious) and has been severely physically abused and neglected. We've worked with a vet-behaviourist who was amazing, all positive reinforcement based, force free work, ensured he has a good diet, enough exercise and mental stimulation and have worked hard building his confidence. Just gutted that something like this may knock us back years but am trying not to overthink!

Sorry for the long post, feel a bit lighter for getting it out!

lyingonthebeach · 14/10/2024 08:23

@robinsrace I do hope your dog gets better soon. You sound like a lovely human for him to have!

I had a lovely weekend with friends and some time outside in sunshine - it really lifted my mood. Now it's oppressively grey and wet and I have to WFH for most of the week 😭. The SAD lamp is already on and it's time for the max strength vit D.

robinsrace · 14/10/2024 16:02

@lyingonthebeach thank you for your kind words We've had sunshine here today which has been lovely, hope it's brightened up for you a bit? Have you got any plans to break the week up a bit?

@DropOfffArtiste that sounds like a lovely swim! One of the outdoor swimming groups near us carries on over winter which seems like madness to me! Do you do indoor swimming? Imagine it's pretty dull compared to outdoor swims

DropOfffArtiste · 14/10/2024 18:55

I'm not a wild outdoor swimmer, this is in a nice heated outdoor pool at the gym. Some people rave about cold water swimming but I'm not that keen. I will go to the indoor pool, maybe once a week but it is more of a faff in the winter with hair drying etc so I will likely go more to the gym and running. As long as I keep exercising. I also bought some Vit D today.

Outdoor heated pool at the gym sounds amazing! Lots of my running friends also rave about cold outdoor water swimming but absolutely not for me, I hate the cold and something about swimming in water that's not treated makes me feel icky!

Grey here today and bad rain forecast for tomorrow. Got a busy week with work and other bits so hoping it will keep me going

itwasnevermine · 15/10/2024 16:25

Well the gym is off the cards for me for a long time, I've badly sprained my ankle and I've been told I'm on crutches for TWO WEEKS!!! Goodbye to my lunch time walks and outside time. This is going to be hard

Oh that's tough! Hope you feel better soon.

EmeraldRoulette · 15/10/2024 19:32

People seem to be doing okay? I have got bad SAD and quite early. I’m doing all the right things so I really hope it shifts.

The annoying physical symptoms are very much in evidence. Those are actually more annoying than the mental ones if that makes sense. I know it’s all connected but you know what I mean.

Like you eat a meal, and it’s as if your body hasn’t registered the energy from food.

i had about one hour of feeling normal today.

Oh no! What happened? Wishing you a speedy recovery!

I’m feeling really good today, despite the grey weather for some reason. Must be the million things I’m doing to try to combat the SAD. I even crunched a few leaves on our dog walk just for good measure, am I turning to into one of the snuggle brigade?? 😵

EmeraldRoulette · 15/10/2024 20:39

@Idratherbepaddleboarding what am I missing from the million things? I did have Covid week before last so lost a week or workouts which hasn’t helped.

Idratherbepaddleboarding · 15/10/2024 22:30

@EmeraldRoulette my SAD lamp of course, multi vitamin, vitamin D, iron, lions mane mushrooms and my new favourite pick me up, green tea. Plus my antidepressants of course but I’m on them all year. I think the mini pill is also helping regulate my hormones. And most importantly, my pole dancing, although I’m sure that’s not for everyone, and weight training. Basically, I’m trying to throw everything at it!

Talking of SAD lamps, I had my first negative comment about it at my new work place today. The lady walked past and said, “What’s that?” No hello or anything! I replied all perky, “Oh it’s my SAD lamp” and she said, “well it’s making me sad”. FFS, I wasn’t even sitting anywhere near her. She’s really not a nice person I don’t think, which is a shame as everyone else has been lovely!

@DropOfffArtiste thank you! I feel very teary this afternoon. I'm in a lot of pain but I've had to come back to work because I have no choice, it's so dull and grey outside and knowing I'll be missing my walks for a long time is getting me down.

DropOfffArtiste · 16/10/2024 15:10

Can you still get out and about even with the crutches? Fresh air will do you so much good.

I didn't sleep well again last night and have a niggling cold but I went to the gym anyway and did a short but sweaty weights session. Then I worked at a cafe for a bit for a change of scene. One more day of work and then I have some time off. Looking forward to catching up on sleep and relaxing a bit.

Comedycook · 16/10/2024 15:15

Well the weather in London today is absolutely gorgeous....sunny and mild. 21 degrees according to the weather report although my car says 23! I'm wearing a summer dress😂

The only problem is when the weather is nice like this, I'm reminded of how much I love it and also feel huge pressure to make the most of it. I am very conscious that I won't see 20 degrees plus for the next 5 months

In a few days I think so but my whole body is just so sore! All I want is a bath but I can't get myself in and out of it

Oh you’re so lucky! It’s raining so hard here that there is flooding in the city centre nearest us and the next village to us! I braved the rain to take the dog out and he turned round and went home 😂. Luckily he has agility tonight so will get his exercise.
