snowbellsxox · 20/05/2023 18:40

Just that really.
I've tried meditation music which has helped with chest pain but still suffer getting stressed in overwhelming situations, its getting in the way of me driving and overthinking sometimes.
I just want it to go away.

I don't have panic attacks just feel my chest get heavy and I feel really stressed.
Please let me know what's worked for you.

Propranolol

BabbleBee · 20/05/2023 18:42

Propranolol is the only thing that’s really taken away the physical feelings of panic for me.

urrrgh46 · 20/05/2023 19:03

Agreeing with pp's - speak to your doctor about a beta blocker. I'm on one called carvedilol for PVCs (palpitations), which are reactive to anxiety. i still get the odd panic attack though too. Had a big one with other night. 🙄😳

fantasmasgoria1 · 20/05/2023 19:06

Propranolol reduces your heart rate so that part lessens but for me other signs of panic/anxiety remain. I just ride it out. Over the years i have tried the many things suggested that may help but they rarely do.

BirbFriend · 20/05/2023 19:20

Venlafaxine, propanolol, and lots of therapy.

WhenTheBeeStings · 20/05/2023 19:25

I’m another one saying Propanol.

bluejelly · 21/05/2023 18:46

Prozac + counselling + meditation fixed me. Am now 95% anxiety free

snowbellsxox · 21/05/2023 19:24

Thank you, can I ask those who have suffered what do you think causes it?

Have you had your heart checked? A tight heavy chest should always be investigated, especially as you say you’re not feeling anxious

WouldYouLikeACrabPuff · 21/05/2023 19:52

Has anyone switched to propranalol from diazepam? I suffer from the condition too 💐

pompomdaisy · 21/05/2023 20:04

You call it panic disorder so I presume you have had a diagnosis? If it is panic disorder rather than panic attack then you need a SSRI and CBT. My daughter has been diagnosed with the condition and is now on 175mg of Sertraline daily. Panic disorder for her usually results in anyone around her calling 999. I would say speak to your gp. If you are having panic attacks then yes propanolol will help.

pompomdaisy · 21/05/2023 20:08

In relation to your question about cause I have spoken to a psychiatrist about this. With panic disorder this can arise at birth. It may be that it doesn't truly kick in to full effect though until life gets harder so in your teens. Panic attacks can happen to anyone and can be the result of stress. It is important to get a proper diagnosis and not self diagnose.

Mutabiliss · 21/05/2023 20:10

Propranolol, and discovering I had PTSD rather than anxiety. Had tons of CBT and also EMDR therapy.

I'm not cured, I don't think it will ever go away, but it's manageable and I've been off the propranolol nearly five years now.

snowbellsxox · 21/05/2023 21:55

Thanks everyone. Yes so I've had a diagnosis. Went to the gp earlier this year after having actual chest pains since Christmas, I thought initially it was damage from chest infection.
When we discussed everything he diagnosed me with panic disorder, completely makes sense when I think about it. For example how l am with driving, my kids walking alongside the road, rushing around sometimes when I don't need too.

Dr also put in the notes 'anxious effect when talking' no idea what that means? I think looking back I was talking really fast.
I'm so glad I spoke to gp about it as I knew something wasn't right overall. The way I react the certain things is just that sometimes 'panic'.
For example now, im so glad they have self service in Aldi GrinConfused. Used to avoid it due to the rush at the tills.

I've only ever once had a panic attack when I was in my teens, thought I was having a stroke and couldn't catch my breath.
This was in public and was so so scary at the time.
A very kind nurse brought me round from it.

“Effect” is feeling - so you were showing signs of feeling anxious.

The way out of panic is through - feeling into it, accepting it, allowing your feelings. It’s a horrible hurdle to go through and I needed a psychotherapist to help me - helps to have someone sit with you while you feel it and learn to tolerate it.

snowbellsxox · 21/05/2023 22:09

Thank you, I'm going to look at both options.
I also need to try get back into working out.
I'm determined to get better or make progress at least.

It's so annoying! I get so annoyed at myself especially when it comes to driving.
Or I'll be speaking to another parent walking on the roadside with my kids, I won't hear anything they're saying because I'm panicking too much about the cars and feel overwhelmed with people being all over.
Say I had the eldest on a buggy board on the back of the pushchair I wouldn't have this feeling because I'm in control of it (he's too big for it now) but just trying to show a day to day example.
It's exhausting! As you all probably know Flowers

Sorry if some of this doesn't make sense!

CBD. I had propanalol but that really only helps with the physical symptoms. CBD gets rid of the anxiety itself.

MaMisled · 21/05/2023 22:30

I take buspirone with good effect but have diazepam prn for emergencies.

Shadyladyo · 21/05/2023 22:31

Doctors are notorious for dismissing women’s chest pain as anxiety. If you genuinely have recurrent episodes of chest tightness you need to demand that is looked at.

QueenBitch666 · 21/05/2023 23:21

Propranolol didn't work for me. Neither did CBT. Escitalopram however did

pompomdaisy · 22/05/2023 08:36

Yes that does sound more like panic disorder. I wouldn't mess about with propanolol but get started on Sertraline. I wish I had done that earlier with my daughter as it could have prevented full blown agoraphobia.

Heartsnrainbows · 22/05/2023 09:37

Propranolol and therapy helped me but you never really get rid of it altogether. I'm still a very anxious person.

pastypirate · 22/05/2023 14:38

I can't recommend propanalol strongly enough. The meds don't fix the problem but they calm down the physical symptoms so you can engage in therapy or whatever. Also the instant effect of them really helps. I'm much better now but I carry a strip of pills with me and I take them if I need to. Knowing the little pill will treat the symptoms if I struggle is so comforting.
Like wise if I have something stressful coming up I make sure I renew my script and I have enough.

DRS1970 · 23/05/2023 10:00

Quetiapine helps me. It is an antipsychotic really, but can be used off label for anxiety. I also dabble with mindfulness distraction techniques which work half the time. The heaviness you describe in your chest really sounds like panic attack symptoms like I used to have. I did find acknowledgement of the symptoms as a panic attack a bit helpful. GL
