What do you take for helping you sleep?

GP gave me zopiclone (5 tablets) just to see how I got on with them in the hope I could have a few nights of improved sleep and make me feel a bit better. They didn’t seem to do anything but was a low dose.
I’ve tried the OTC sleep tablets like Boots Sleepeaze etc which also didn’t do anything.
Is there something you have had before that actually works?
I don’t take them every night, but need them occasionally to allow me to re charge.

Hello OP sorry I dont have an answer but am interested in what others say. I have terrible problems sleeping and am not functioning well on the 3 or 4 hours I get.

Mine is work related stress making me play out EVERYTHING in my head as soon as I lie down. Exhausting. Could be pre menopausal too.

BeautyGoesToBenidorm · 31/10/2021 20:35

Promethazine. It's sold OTC as Phenergan Night, I find it really helpful for anxiety-ridden sleepless nights!

Wolfiefan · 31/10/2021 20:36

Watching with interest!

danni0509 · 31/10/2021 20:37

@BeautyGoesToBenidorm what dose do you take please? My son is on this and I feel like i am giving him water, it has no affect at all. How in advance do you take it? Thanks

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 31/10/2021 20:37

Get Amitryptiline or Mirtazapine from your gp.

colouringindoors · 31/10/2021 20:39

Trazodone. Highly recommend it.

TheVolturi · 31/10/2021 20:41

Ds is Autistic and is given melatonin from consultant.
When I struggle sleeping I take a piriton. It really helps me.

Brewandhoney · 31/10/2021 20:43

Just buy normal Phenergan tablets. (The night version is the same dosage, but half the number of tablets, for double the price!)
It’s a drowsy antihistamine- it’s what’s in night nurse.

Doesn’t make you wake drowsy.

Make sure you checked out your sleep hygiene- is your bed room tidy? Stopped using screens an hour before bed? Etc

Giveemtheoldrazzledazzle · 31/10/2021 20:44

7mg of zopiclone and 50mg of promethazine does the job although it gives me restless legs for a while before I get to sleep.

userxx · 31/10/2021 20:50

There's an antihistamine that knocks me out, cant remember the name but I found out by accident.

StressyWoman · 31/10/2021 20:51

I’ve only taken it twice but Night nurse (has to be the night ones) made me very drowsy. I was on zopiclone years ago and they didn’t work well either.

YorkshireGirl35 · 31/10/2021 20:54

I get a fantastic nights sleep with Phenergan tablets but they do make me feel drowsy the next day.
I also use a CBD sleep spray from Holland and Barratt that you spray under your tongue, works well for me

Attictroll · 31/10/2021 20:58

Taking melatonin when I need it has changed my life and mental health www.biovea.net/uk/product/detail/21525/melatonin-3mg-50-fast-dissolve--natural-fruit-flavor-50-vegetarian-tablets/?deptid=0&cid=0&mid=0&kw=melatonin

zippidydooday · 31/10/2021 21:00

Phenergan is amazing.

Sheldock · 31/10/2021 21:03

Melatonin- 3mg...exactly the same as a PP linked to!
I tend to take it when I wake in the night, without it, it's 2-3 hours of awareness. With it, I'm asleep within 30mins

Wagsandclaws · 31/10/2021 21:05

I have used Kirkland sleep aid ( I use eBay or Amazon to buy it ) it's an American antihistamine made for Costco.

It's the only sleep aid I've ever used that keeps me asleep for the night. I take a whole one but some people find half a one does the job.

I've read reviews that it can make you sluggish in the morning hence taking a half but I've got used to it so feel fine when I wake up.

I take it about 3/4 nights a week. Menopause has complete screwed my sleeping patterns and this is the only thing that works for me.

BarryTheChopper · 31/10/2021 21:12

Another one saying melatonin, it’s a game changer. I take one about 30 minutes before I want to go to bed and I’m probably asleep after 10 minutes of reading. I don’t feel drowsy next day after taking one.

userxx · 31/10/2021 21:13

@Wagsandclaws Yep, that contains the antihistamine that knocked me out.

belimoo · 31/10/2021 21:14

I would also agree with phenergan. Melatonin doesn't do much for me but does work for dp.

I take 10mg of phenergan and it does a great job of making me sleepy. I can still wake in the night if I need to but it helps me to go back to sleep again if I do.

Piapiano · 31/10/2021 21:15

I'm interested in the CBD spray but am concerned whether there are long-term effects of taking it that haven't been properly studied yet.

belimoo · 31/10/2021 21:15

I feel sleepy for around 12 hours after taking phenergan, so take it quite early in the evening (around 8pm) to make sure I'm not drowsy the next morning.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 31/10/2021 21:16

Melatonin wore off for me after about 6 months.

thenightsky · 31/10/2021 21:19

I know you've said Boots Sleep easy doesn't do it for you, but I found it does work, but only if I take it at least 2 hours before bed.

Iamanicepersonreally · 31/10/2021 21:20

Phenergan helps me

mummylondon16 · 31/10/2021 21:23

i’ve been taking igennus magnesium complex and using magnesium gel. took a few weeks but now my sleep is great
also something to consider: my thyroid crashed when i went into peri menopause (i have autoimmune thyroid disease so hormonal changes can cause flares) my thyroid crashed to 4 percent and my sleep was horrendous. it’s now back up to 75-80 percent. and my sleep is improved alongside the magnesium

be mindful of taking things like zopiclone or other sleeping tablets before exploring possible thyroid or hormonal or deficiencies causing sleep issues. they can make things worse long term
