SAD/ feeling low in winter support thread

Hi all, after reading some unhelpful comments on another thread where someone is struggling, I wondered if anyone would like to join me in a SAD support thread for anyone who is feeling low now that winter is coming, whether you have a SAD diagnosis or not.

Disclaimer: I know anyone can post anything they like on a public forum but please, out of respect for those of us who are really struggling, don’t come on this thread to tell us how much you love winter, hygge, snuggling, hot chocolate or twinkly lights or tell us that we’ll feel better if only we change our mindset.

Please feel free to share your feelings, good or bad, tell us about your day or share tips for things that help (or don’t). Hopefully we can all help each other get through this winter!

Of course you can join @sandwiches77. January really is the worst isn’t it?

I have dragged myself through a short workout. Doesn't make much difference to the general uuuuuuuuuhhhhh of a winter's day.

LadyCatStark · 23/01/2022 14:38

@EmmaH2022 I’m the opposite, I find a workout makes a huuuge difference to my mood. I could do with going on the cross trainer today as I’ve only been on 4 times this week and I try to do 5 but the bloody dog woke me up at 5:40 and I’m soooo tired!

There are occasional days it helps but today is not one of them!

Good to work out for other reasons of course.

sandwiches77 · 23/01/2022 17:34

LadyCatStark EmmaH2022 I find exercise usually gives me a boost but is dependent on the type of exercise and also a bit of a catch 22, if I feel blue then I don't feel like exercising... Thank goodness for ddog who has to be walked and I usually feel better after being in the fresh air but when I'm really blue, even that doesn't help. For me it seems to be worse this January as I do have a lot on my plate

sandwiches77 · 23/01/2022 17:42

Talking about exercise, I have a swim only membership at our local sports centre and Ddog has meant that I haven't been able to use it for much else but I am considering getting full membership as will then be able to do zumba and the like, I have no coordination but surely dancing will make me smile Smile

Counting down the days for January to be over! How's everyone doing?

My work bestie handed in her notice and I'm gutted as now everyone wants to leave. I want to train to do something else but don't even know where to start! Been super anxious today and threw up in my mouth serving a customer. Churning stomach all day.

LadyCatStark · 23/01/2022 20:20

@sandwiches77 yes I’m very grateful to have a dog this winter (I remember you from the puppy threads). On a lazy weekend, I used to do about 2000 steps but now I do at least 8000 and get some fresh air.

@ShaneTwane it feels like it’s been January forever! At least it’s DH’s pay day tomorrow!

Jel my payday is Friday and feels a life time away!

How's the doggy doing?

Sorry I name changed and it's ridiculous lol

sandwiches77 · 23/01/2022 21:16

I'm on the new puppy thread LadyCatStark and yes although it has been hard work having a puppy, the positives outweigh the negatives.

LadyCatStark · 24/01/2022 15:22

Haha @ShaneTwane I figured out who you were (eventually) 😂.

Pup is either a perfect angel or a complete knobhead, there’s no in between 😂 today is angel so fed but there’s still time! Here he is looking how he permanently looks in winter 🙄.

Another low energy day

I have had some of an energy drink with Taurine in. So far, no difference! It's that "3 hours of productivity" thing again!

sandwiches77 · 28/01/2022 12:51

How are you feeling EmmaH2022 LadyCatStark ShaneTwane

Thank you for asking sandwiches

How are you? Rumours abound we will have a mild day in London tomorrow, hope that's true.

If you had asked me this morning, I'd have said still not getting enough done...but I have made more progress on a side project (paying) today. I did a bunch of extra work in June/July last year...I think this is a model I will follow from now as I'm also hyper in summer!

ShaneTwane · 28/01/2022 18:05

Weather isn't too bad here at the moment more overcast than anything else. How is everyone?

LadyCatStark · 29/01/2022 00:04

@sandwiches77 in terms of SAD, I’m doing ok. It’s been a good winter weather wise to be fair and of course I have to go out with the dog which helps. I’ve been very busy this week and last though and feel all socialised out. I just want to hide under my weighted blanket and watch The Big Bang Theory for a day but I have to go out socialising again tomorrow. How are you?

OP posts:
sandwiches77 · 29/01/2022 07:32

In terms of SAD I am feeling a bit better but I have an ear infection which hurts like hell Angry struggling to hear anything and wearing two hats on the dog walk to keep my ears warm Grin But February is in sight now

LadyCatStark · 30/01/2022 16:32

How is everyone? SAD has hit me like a bus this weekend 😭. I really struggled with going to our friends’ last night, I just wanted to tell everyone to shut up even though they weren’t doing anything wrong. Today I’ve had loads of house work to do and it’s just making me angry as it’s never ending actually, everything is making me angry today!

EmmaH2022 · 30/01/2022 16:50

Sorry to hear that Lady
The irritation is the worst isn't it?

Every winter, my mum gets worried that I'm not socialising "enough" as she finds it helps her SAD but I don't find it helpful. I get quite anxious and irritable if I have to socialise. I used to joke about moving my birthday to June!

I did a proper workout yesterday for the first time in ages and paid the price with extra insomnia. I took a pill about 3am which didn't really work. This usually means I will be yawning until I ping awake at about 10pm.

I don't have such weird issues in summer.

I have literally just done reading and laundry today and was meant to work on a freelance project. Gah.

ShaneTwane · 01/02/2022 06:02

We have made it to February. Home stretch now. Sorry your not feeling great. Tbh dp has relapsed bad and I'm so stressed I've been sick a lot lately. Really has been a bad start to the year hasn't it.

EmmaH2022 · 01/02/2022 18:11

Shane sorry to hear that Flowers

LadyCatStark · 01/02/2022 22:35

@ShaneTwane oh yes it is isn’t it? Perhaps March will bring some sunshine. I’m feeling a bit brighter now, I think I was feeling low as I had a busy week last week and only managed to exercise twice.

Sorry to hear about your husband, I wonder if he has SAD too?

OP posts:
EmmaH2022 · 02/02/2022 19:35

How's everyone?

There's been lots of sun and using the SAD lamp but still sluggish and sleepy...more than usual at this time of year. Usually I start to perk up about now but of course every year isn't the same.

Ulysses · 03/02/2022 07:51

My January wasn't too bad after all but I think the bar was set fairly low after the stresses of November and December. I hope things get better for you @ShaneTwane.

I still have very little energy at night and am finding the days very mundane. I really need to make an effort to see more people but it's hard working from home. I don't need a lot of company but having none at all is chipping away at me. I need to get planning to make it happen.
