Anyone know of something good to help self-harming scars on my teen daughter heal?

Just that really .. she's coming home for Easter and recently confided how upset she was that the scars on her wrists weren't healing.

Yes, sadly is self-harming which we hadn't realised although we know about her other mental health issues.

I'd love to give her a cream or something which might help them fade? Don't mind how expensive - this is important.

Is there anything that's worked for you?

I’m so sorry your daughter and you are going through this. I hope she feels better in herself soon. Many years ago my husband suffered second degree burns on his hand. Doctors treating him suggested he purchased vitamin E capsules, broke them open and spread the oil on his scar to assist the healing process. This did help. It may help your daughter. Good luck!

As long as the scars are still in the process of healing, i.e. still have some colour in them, you can try Kelocote.
I had a deep wound on my wrist, it wasn't from self harming but it looked like it could have been so I was self conscious about it. Kelocote cleared it right up.

The plastic surgeons at my hospital swear by e45 cream and scar massage - it seems to have pretty good results!

I’ve good things about bio oil.

ILoveShula · 31/03/2021 18:28

Sudocrem

Rose hip oil is supposed to be good for scarring

Thank you both.... will try this.

Littlered how did you use the Kelocote? How long for? And which product did you use? Did you start straight away or a few months after? Their website says it helps up to 2 years and I think these are a few months old but will find out more when I see her

I've never used it on scars but i had awful purple stretch marks and Elicina cream was amazing. It's about 30 quid a jar and it's made from snail excretions which sounds disgusting but it's brilliant stuff.

Indoor love the sound of that ... poor love she has stretch marks too having gone from long and lanky to adding Lockdown kilos....

Rose hip oil - fascinating!! Love the idea of that

Vitamin e capsules. Split them open and apply the oil to the scars with cotton wool or cotton buds.
Have had a deep scar from my teens heal completely using this method 👍🏻

I'm so sorry your daughter has gone through this.

I have a scar on my leg from walking through a glass door, and one on my elbow from a car crash.

Each time I used these amazing silicone plasters, you stick them on and keep them on overnight, or I left mine on almost 24/7. Made a huge difference. They feel and lol a bit like those silicone pads you could put in your shoes to stop the balls of your feet rubbing (if you remember those!)

For the one on my elbow I also had some treatment where something was injected directly into it (sorry I can't remember what.) this faded it almost to nothing.

The silicon pads are miracle workers though. Bio oil etc did nothing. My husband also used a silicone gel type thing on some scars in his eyes and this worked amazingly.

Good luck!

I can highly recommend bio oil

I used it as soon as my wound healed. All I remember is that it was called Kelocote scar gel and came in a small, but expensive, tube. A friend used it on her caesarean scar and it worked completely; it's rather amazing.
littleredberries · 01/04/2021 17:15

Just to add, I kept using it til I achieved the desired result. About three weeks, off the top of my head.

nothingcanhurtmewithmyeyesshut · 01/04/2021 20:46

Home bargains does a stretch mark oil that's really good. Seems to work on scars too but the wounds have to be healed over first.

In the meantime she could use spray on plasters as it makes a surprisingly good base for makeup to cover them up.

onedaysoonish · 01/04/2021 21:39

I've just had a c section and my obstetrician told me to use kelo cote gel on the scar - twice a day. I know a few other girls who were recommended it for their c section scar. You can use straight away I think it's most helpful in the first few months anyway.

KirstenBlest · 01/04/2021 23:29

@nothingcanhurtmewithmyeyesshut, that's the bio oil dupe isn't it.

DramaAlpaca · 02/04/2021 00:39

Another vote for Vitamin E oil.

RedTen · 02/04/2021 00:41

Bio oil

TaraR2020 · 02/04/2021 00:55

Lavender oil is quite effective. It might also be worth her having her vit d levels checked, deficiency can cause slow wound healing. Of course, most ppl are deficient in the UK so no harm from starting a supplement anyway.

I hope she's OK Flowers

nothingcanhurtmewithmyeyesshut · 02/04/2021 00:57

@KirstenBlest I think so. Just cheaper. Its yellow and smells nice.

KirstenBlest · 03/04/2021 09:51

@nothingcanhurtmewithmyeyesshut, I think both that one and the bio-oil stink. It seems very moisturising though.

nothingcanhurtmewithmyeyesshut · 03/04/2021 10:10

If they don't fade after a few more months once they're properly healed, what about a small tattoo to hide them?
