Yes, I use them. They've been absolutely a life changer for me, and I have anxious (avoidant) personality disorder. They remove so much of the physical stuff that I can cope much better with the mental stuff.

The only side effect that I can think of is really vivid dreams and nightmares.

lucy2204 · 25/09/2020 20:36

@Kakiweewee thanks for replying hun, I'm glad there working for you, I'm praying they work for me to I just want to be able to leave the house with out a horrible stomach ache and panicking -.-, weird question but do you still drink coffee/tea/fizzy on them? I know it says avoid but with 3 young kids a coffee is pretty much needed everyday -.- will cut it out if I absolute have to xx

I gave up caffeine and fizzy drinks to help with bladder issues, so I don't know, alas.

BlackSwan · 25/09/2020 21:31

I drink coffee and i take propanalol, though I'd only have one espresso.

Propanalol is the best thing that has happened to me all year. It's a total silver bullet for the physical manifestations of anxiety. No downside. I'm stunned that despite having anxiety since my 20s (don't ask my age now), no one has ever suggested it before now. Such a lot of time wasted.

BunniesBunniesBunnies · 25/09/2020 21:33

Following! Just took some for the first time today...

lucy2204 · 25/09/2020 21:41

@BlackSwan thankyou for replying, do you know if they last throughout the day? Like what's there burn out timer sort of thing, I'm on 40mg once a day my doctor didn't really give me a lot of info just kinda wanted me off the phone by the sound of him so didn't get to ask anything Trying to work out the best time of day to be taking them xx I'm glad there working out for you

@BunniesBunniesBunnies we could be beta buddies? I'm so nervous to take it for some reason-.-

BlackSwan · 25/09/2020 21:42

So I was told they’re effective for about 3 hours, but they take about 30-45 mins to kick in

BlackSwan · 25/09/2020 21:43

Don’t be nervous about beta blockers! You will just be calm. You won’t get a raging heart or sweaty palms - you’ll be you, that’s all.

BlackSwan · 25/09/2020 21:43

Racing... I meant.

itchyfinger · 25/09/2020 21:45

Propanalol (probably not spelt it correctly) has also been a game changer for me. If you have physical reactions to anxiety (which in turn make you more anxious because you're worried people will notice) then they are great! I feel so relaxed when I'm on them. When I had chronic anxiety I had to do 2 x 20mg per day, now I just do 10mg when I predict I may need them I.e for nerves.

BunniesBunniesBunnies · 25/09/2020 21:45

@lucy2204 sure thing! My doc on the phone said to take 1 (I think), but then the packet said to take 3 a day...? So I took 2😅

I don’t think I felt a huge difference... but then I wasn’t overly anxious today?

Are you planning to take one a day or only when you’re anxious?

BlackSwan · 25/09/2020 21:48

They’re so great - I think they’re extremely popular. I thought I would need to convince the GP to allow me to have them: she told me she even takes them before a first date! Then I went to fill the script and the pharmacist told me they’re a game changer! I’m now on the bandwagon. 40mg when required - not even every day

tinkerbellla · 25/09/2020 21:49

I take them to help me with job interviews and I'll sometimes take them when I'm feeling stressed and panicked. They are great, no side effects at all.

They definitely give you a feeling of calm but not woozy or anything. That's just my experience but hopefully they will work for you too! Good luck.

FreshfieldsGal · 25/09/2020 21:50

I'm on 3 x 40mg.
I was getting panic attacks with anxiety, to the point where I'd start vomiting, got rushed to hospital twice with suspected heart attack but it was just severe panic attacks.

Lifesaver, they are amazing. The only side effect I had was cold hands and feet but that was very minor.
I take them every day to avoid any relapses.

Rustyspanners · 25/09/2020 21:53

My GP has prescribed me some too but I'm too scared to take them. Had them in the cupboard for a few weeks. I'm already on citalopram. Have been for a few months. I have severe GAD and Healthy Anxiety. I'm too scared to take the beta blockers though, in case they kill me. Grin And now you've mentioned the fizzy drinks thing, that's put me off even more! I literally survive on caffeinated fizzy!

CandleWick4 · 25/09/2020 21:56

Same. I take one 40mg a day. Take it in the morning. Game changer for me. The only down side for me is I get quite out of breath easily.
ExCwmbranDweller · 25/09/2020 21:58

I didn't know about the fizzy drinks bit! What will happen if I mix propranolol with fizzy water, I'm guessing nothing world ending or I would have noticed.

Another person who has found them a game changer. Plus now I'm less anxious I've been able to take steps to do stuff that also makes me less anxious, it's the best sort of vicious circle ever, wish I'd known about them 20 years ago.

Bluntness100 · 25/09/2020 22:00

I have propanalol due to the fact I was getting panicked due to work presentations, I was regularly having to present to two to three hundred people. And it was going to end my career because I was so nervous

I went to the gp and burst into tears, crying I couldn’t do it and it was escalating, because I was scared I’d get the reaction and over thinking it, ,,,she tried to bizzarely say it was depression, which it really wasn’t, so I argued against, before she then offered these there and then, musicians take them for stage fright, and they are excellent.

I’ve not looked back, they block the physical reaction to nerves, I only take one before a big presentation, now on line obviously due to Covid,

I would say rhe only impacts are if I take one and I don’t really need it, I can feel very very tired, and if I take one and I haven’t eaten I feel a bit slurry, so I make sure I do need one and I eat something before I take one.

I drink coffee and do whatever, I have very rarely taken three a day (normal dose for anxiety ) if I’ve done that it’s because I’ve been presenting throughout a major meeting and need them,

I don’t have anxiety, I’m generally very confident, I do have nerves for standing up in front of hundreds of people and talking, and they just stop the physical reaction and let me do that,. It has probably been about fifteen years since I got prescribed them and I go through about three weeks supply every six months, so they just let me keep ordering as the usage is so low

My usage may not be what yours will be, but I don’t have the physical symptoms constantly, if I did, I’d take these without a moments hesitation.

lucy2204 · 25/09/2020 22:27

@Rustyspanners join with me and @BunniesBunniesBunnies and we'll all do it together, my biggest fear was also ending up in hospital or dying 😂🙈not sure why tho "/ & @BunniesBunniesBunnies they said to take one every day during the week as its week days I'm most effected by the physical symptoms as I Have to go out etc" /but to call if I want to up the dose or lower it, I'm most likely going to ask to half it or up it as Il need it to last long than 3 hours :( my days are around 7 hours + and il be panicking and have stomach cramps and poop (tmi sorry) all day long otherwise :( what's your plan? @BlackSwan I know realistically I have nothing to worry about but I'm panicking anyway 😂😂😂🙈I read online it's best to take your first one at night but I'm not feeling anxious right now so not sure if I should or not? "/bloody wish the doctor would of given me more time to ask these questions :( I cannot believe how many people actually are on these I've never ever heard of them tbh I'm glad they've helped you all! It won't let me tag everyone 🙈but thankyou all for sharing your experiences xx

@BunniesBunniesBunnies how was your day in them today? Mines been odd I've felt odd if ya get what I mean 🤔still a little nervous aswell tbh x

OP posts:
BunniesBunniesBunnies · 26/09/2020 23:08

I took two but felt no different. But then I did have quite a good day... Maybe I didn’t need them...? I’m starting to wonder whether I actually have “anxiety”, my bad days are more marked by low mood and anger, not necessarily the physical symptoms of anxiety... so maybe it won’t help so much for me:-(

lucy2204 · 27/09/2020 09:09

@BunniesBunniesBunnies I thought the same I still got very panicky about going out 🤔meh

I had them once and genuinely thought I was going to die. I felt like I was suffocating- I think they dropped my blood pressure too quickly. I'd start at a very low dose and see how that works.
