OP

I'm not going to say you are not entitled or that you are less entitled, if you fulfil the criteria you are eligible.

What I will sat is that depending on your anxiety the BB could make things worse.

You will be challenged, I've had a BB (originally orange) for a number of years and if you are not using a wheelchair then some people can be really nasty.

I've been accused of using a grand parent's badge, faking illness etc.

A previous work colleague was shouted at for being able bodied, He took his prosthetic foot off and threw it at the person.

x2boys · 05/07/2020 13:38

Regardless of water you think people with anxiety should have a a blue badge or not ,it's not up to you to judge June ,The Op may or may not be eligible but it's for the council to decide not random posters on here

june2007 · 05/07/2020 13:40

Dishranawaywith the spoon, I would be the one driving if he was in this state. He doesn,t really drive on his own.

june2007 · 05/07/2020 13:44

I agreex2boys that it is up to the council, but I do worry that the net has become too big. The intentions are good but the spaces are few.

x2boys · 05/07/2020 13:49

It's still not easy to.get a badge ,people have to provide all sorts of evidence for them if they don't automatically meet the criteria , but rather than complaining that people with non visible disabilities shouldn't be allowed to apply for a blue badge people should be complaining about the lack of blue badge spaces .

ChickenDrumstick · 05/07/2020 13:50

This thread has some really unpleasant posts on. So unfair to judge others when you don’t know what you’re going through.

JuanNil · 05/07/2020 14:16

@ChickenDrumstick agreed. It blows my mind that anybody thinks it's appropriate to come to a mental health forum to complain about mental health issues not being as 'deserving' as physical ones. How on earth would that play out if it was the other way round?

june2007 · 05/07/2020 16:51

I think the issue is when people with physical conditions feel that they a service which was originally set up for them is now become so broad that they are loosing out to some who , although do have issues perhaps are more physically able.

RedOasis · 05/07/2020 17:00

I get sooo peed about about being ‘challendlged’ about my bb. I was given badge under 40. I constantly get people checking my car for a badge when I park. Even where there are lots of spaces people do it. Not all disabilities are visible. I have visible and hidden disabilities. I don’t know what people expect of you when you have a bb - am I supposed to pour out of the car like a puddle and schlep about in the floor? I have seen many elderly who can walk plenty faster than me without aid, who have a badge. I hate this society where disabled people are het and can be abused I even had someone leave me an anon note on my car telling me I should b ashamed I am using this space and they have reported me for abusing disabled space. Some people want to mind their own gd business. I’m so sick of feeling like I need to justify my disability to people. I constantly feel like I’m doing something wrong and actually feel guilty and like I’m being watched. I really hate some people. Why don’t you find someone else to pick on. You can’t see what’s going on inside someone. MIND YOUR BUSINESS

I could have written exactly the same.

Some people see you pull up, look at your “young” face and go into full self-appointed parking warden mode, craning their neck to look for a blue badge etc.

You just have to ignore them. They generally pantomime about looking silly but eventually slink off when they see they were wrong.

You really have to learn to ignore it for the sake of your blood pressure.

I think hanging around disabled parking bays looking for infringements might be a kind of hobby for some. Sad, but if it deters blue badge theft & fraud, it has a small upside.

Evelefteden · 05/07/2020 17:11

I don’t want to see the back of P&C spaces. Getting you baby of of a car in car seats or trying to put them in the car seat with very limited space is a hazard to baby and near by cars.

Serious anxiety is debilitating and presents physically. I think it gets minimised a bit because it’s gets banded about a lot. I can totally see why some one may need a space closer to the door.

ArriettyJones · 05/07/2020 17:16

Serious anxiety is debilitating and presents physically.

I can only conclude the posters saying that are the ones trying to goad.

Anxiety has never “presented physically” in a way analogous to an advanced MS, amputation, cerebral palsy, gross motor tics, spinal injury, or visual impairment.

So, if you’re posting sincerely, maybe drop that line of argument?

BlankTimes · 05/07/2020 17:38

MashedPotatoBrainz Sorry, I didn't mean to make the BB application process sound easy, I know it's not, I've been appointee for DD at PIP Tribunal, that is a harder one, but it's along the same lines.

Have you thought about involving your MP?
In your shoes, I'd make a case to challenge the report that says you can do something when you have medical evidence that says you cannot, present it to your MP and ask them to approach the single organisation who wrote that report and act on your behalf.

RedOasis Sorry to hear you are often challenged, DD so far in 9 or so years of having a BB from mid teens to mid twenties has never had that happen. She has no visible aids.
I've heard a lot of people say they have been challenged and have suggested that if it ever happens and I'm not there to deal with it, then she's to tell them she'll share her confidential medical diagnoses only with medical professionals.

Evelefteden · 05/07/2020 17:45

Can I just remind posters this has been posted on the Mental Health board - not AIBU or chat. Posters come here for support with their mental health issues. This isn’t about who’s disability is worse.

It does present physically. Maybe you should stop trying to police what posters write and educate yourself.

Sweating, dizzy, heart palpations, diarrhea ( this is how mine presents) headaches, shortness of breath ( another symptom I have) muscle spasms, chest pain ( this be had this) Sometimes I’ve felt as if I’d had some kind of trippy drug.

I’ve not had a serious anxiety for a long time but please don’t tell me anxiety doesn't present in physical forms.

KarenKuruma · 05/07/2020 17:55

Dunno - as a wheelchair user with ASD I have had panic attacks (or anxiety related meltdowns maybe?) that have caused me to pass out.

That's a pretty "physical presentation", no? Though possibly more due to the other shit I have wrong with my health than specifically the anxiety alone Grin

Evelwfteden I don’t think anyone is doing n here ‘Bragging’ about how I’ll they are! It’s actually a natural flow in the vein of the conversation and original post. No ones trying intentionally to be unhelpful I don’t think. 🙂

KarenKuruma · 05/07/2020 17:59

FWIW though arietty, I think your idea of two or three different types of badge - "needs to be near shop but does not need extra space", "needs wider space and to be near shop", "needs wider space (however far away)". In my manual chair I'd need to be nearer, but in my powerchair I could be six miles away!

KarenKuruma · 05/07/2020 18:01

That should be "I think your idea... makes the most sense !"

ArriettyJones · 05/07/2020 18:03

Me too. The crazy thing is I only have space for one, so I’m forever trying to second guess what unloading space will be available before I set out. (In practice, the night before). If I have to self propel, I can make do with a slightly smaller space, but have a smaller “range” for the rest of the trip.

It’s crazy that local councils aren’t being forced to address the whole issue. Most council tax payers seem surprised when they find out what’s happened.

Yes exactly, I mentioned this before but it doesn't seem to be stopping anybody. I've just checked and there are numerous other boards for people to go to with their complaints about which disabilities are 'higher up the food chain' in their opinions. I really can't see how it's appropriate at all to bring that attitude here. Even if that's what you strongly believe. Please take it elsewhere, stop bullying people about their experiences with mental illness.

Well we are going to have show horn more spaces in somehow. This can’t go on can it?

I didn’t say that it doesn’t present physically. Read properly.

Sweating, dizzy, heart palpations, diarrhea ( this is how mine presents) headaches, shortness of breath ( another symptom I have) muscle spasms, chest pain ( this be had this) Sometimes I’ve felt as if I’d had some kind of trippy drug.

Right, and which bit of that do you consider ” analogous to an advanced MS, amputation, cerebral palsy, gross motor tics, spinal injury, or visual impairment.”?

Your actually on a Mental Health board saying that all those other disabilities are worse. What are you doing? 🥴
PurpleDaisies · 05/07/2020 18:07

I really feel sorry for the op of this thread and it’s a real shame posters couldn’t keep their debate away from her need for support.
