Currently been on this 5 weeks. Brilliant sleep. Feel back to the old me but I've put on so much weight!!! I can't stop eating x

Ifonlywecouldwishuponastar · 02/04/2020 22:22

It's good at first but I'm starting to feel it's wearing off. Really struggling with my mood again despite being on 45mg. I've also put weight on as it gives you an bit of an appetite.

Killerpinkflamingo · 04/04/2020 21:52

Total life changer! Mirtazapine is my miracle drug. I was at rock bottom with anxiety and depression and chronic, relentless insomnia. Mirtazapine sorted it all out pretty much straight away Smile I’ve been on 30mg for over two years now and the insomnia, depression and anxiety are now nothing but a horrible memory. It gave me an enormous appetite in the beginning, but that wore off after a couple of months and now my appetite is normal. Do give them a go - I think they are wonderful, they absolutely changed my life Smile

chocolateisavegetable · 06/04/2020 22:41

It was the only AD that worked for my depression and had the added bonus of helping me sleep better

Harriedgymmum · 08/04/2020 22:36

My daughter has recently had her dose increased from 15 to 30mg. She was told that it will not help her sleep at the higher dose. Is this something other people have found?
Her mood is quite low at the moment, I’m finding it difficult to keep her positive especially with the lock down we are in. I try to keep her busy with painting, sewing etc and a walk each day but she is withdrawing from contact with her friends. Any advice?

naughtycat · 08/04/2020 23:41

It was really good for me. I was on it for 3 years (along with sertraline). It was the most positive and stable 3 years of my life! Stupidly I quit all my meds cold turkey overnight and ended up really unwell and am now on something else (which I don't think is as good). It will make you feel very hungry...and crave sugary food. But remember, the drug itself does not cause weight gain.....you may have to think carefully about what you are eating and schedule in exercise to control your weight. But it's totally possible to do that. And hopefully you will have more energy and motivation when you get in to it. And yes.....you will sleep like a baby. You will have the most restful, satisfying sleep you have ever experienced in your life Grin

Killerpinkflamingo · 10/04/2020 22:11

@Harriedgymmum the general advice is that lower doses of Mirtazapine are more sedative than higher doses. However, I sleep much better on 30mg than 15mg, so it’s very individual.

YouBoggleMyMind · 10/04/2020 22:18

I took Mirtazapine for PTSD. I wasn't sleeping and it defo made a difference instantly. It dulled the anxiety and improved my mood.

Iamnotmad · 15/04/2020 17:21

I couldn't stop eating when I was on it. I would eat and eat and eat until I felt grossly bloated, and it was only at that point I could stop eating. I was on it with citalopram and it was a useless combination. My psychiatrist refused to believe that it wasn't working and accused me of not wanting to get better. I never went back to see him after that, and my gp changed my medications to something more effective with less dramatic side effects.

Yogawoogie · 15/04/2020 17:26

Miracle drug for me. I previously had no appetite and had insomnia alone with depression and anxiety. I eat and sleep well and along with cbt the anxiety and depression is lessening.
Remember to give it time before you make up your mind.

SallyWD · 15/04/2020 17:45

My DH has been taking it for 6 weeks for anxiety and depression (which were also causing insomnia). He's just increased his dose from 15mg to 30mg. I'd say that generally there have been big improvements. He was on his knees with exhaustion before but now he's getting really good sleep most (not every) night. He's lost this haunted look he had before and now looks and behaves more like his old self - not someone who's being consumed by their anxiety and depression. I really do feel his depression has lifted and he agrees. However he still does have some bad days when his mood is low but I think that's because he's still working in a stressful and demanding role. He lost his appetite when depressed and lost a lot of weight. Now, like others, he's eating loads. He's especially snacking lots at night after dinner. I haven't noticed any significant weight gain though.

Iamnotmad · 15/04/2020 19:49

It's worth being vigilant about the excessive eating mirtazapine causes. I piled on the pounds in no time at all. Mirt made me crave sweet food and carbs intensely. I slept well for a while and then the sedative effects wore off and I began to have trouble sleeping once again. It also gave me restless legs in bed at night which was both disconcerting and uncomfortable.

bluemarie87 · 15/04/2020 20:14

@Iamnotmad I could have written what you have myself. Been on 15mg for 6 weeks. And the effects are wearing off sleep wise - takes me ages to get to sleep but takes me forever to come around on a morning. What are your experiences of that?

I too was a size 8 and now a size 12 from 6 weeks so yes it's made me gain weight like crazy. But I'm not depressed anymore but my anxiety is creeping back up but I think that may be lockdown related.

Iamnotmad · 15/04/2020 20:27

@bluemarie87 I had trouble getting going in the morning when I was on mirt. If I remember correctly, I had to call in work sick for the first few days while I got used to being so groggy and sluggish. If you can try and resist the munchies that will help but personally I found the sweet/carb cravings extremely intense. If it made me crave sticks of celery and lettuce leaves then there wouldn't have been a problem. I just had to quit the drug after a few months because I found the weight gain too much, and therapeutic benefits were not discernable to me. Also with weight gain you are at risk of developing type 2 diabetes with all its attendant complications.

Iamnotmad · 15/04/2020 20:32

@bluemarie87 I too have been getting increased anxiety since lockdown, and so have friends and acquaintances. I've been having palpitations and a fast heart beat on and off.

bluemarie87 · 15/04/2020 20:36

I'm hoping that the morning sluggishness will
Eventually wear off. It's much better than the first few days but still really hard to come around. I tried serteline and I had a bad time with that drug so this has been heaven compared to that. I do wish there was a medication that didn't have the sluggishness to it and didn't make me pile on the pounds. I was diagnosed with pnd 14 weeks ago and had 8 weeks on sertreline and 6 weeks on this so don't really want to change again too soon.

I have no enthusiasm to do anything at all and my anxiety is so high. I feel like this year has been hell and I don't see a light at the end of this horrid tunnel.

Sparky87 · 15/04/2020 20:48

I’ve been on 15mg for 3 years. My gp put me on it for anxiety, depression and insomnia and for me it’s been amazing. However the initial sleep effects have worn off slightly, it doesn’t knock me out like it used to but I get a good amount of sleep. He refuses to increase my dose as it is less effective for sleep and can actually highly increase anxiety at higher than 15mg and on the odd occasion I’ve accidentally taken two I’ve not slept a wink and had physical as well as mental anxiety symptoms so I believe him.

Sparky87 · 15/04/2020 20:49

Also I tend to have very vivid dreams.

bimbimbap · 15/04/2020 20:54

i started on mirt then switched to sertraline as the food cravings and constipation we’re making me really unhappy. the transition itself wasn’t pleasant but i’m MUCH better now and not planning to stop taking sertraline any time soon.

Iamnotmad · 15/04/2020 21:10

I have tried loads of antidepressants and most of them were useless - especially sertraline and citalopram. But I know there are threads on here with people saying how much those two drugs have helped them.

Mochatatts · 15/04/2020 21:17

I found it to be really useful for my depression and to get a restful night's sleep. I tried fluoxetine first and that didn't touch my mood.
Was on 45mg of mitazapine for over a year and now about to come off it completely. I found I slept loads on the higher dose but didn't realise I was until coming off it, need much less sleep these days despite working nights. It did make me starving to begin with but that wore off. Honestly cannot think of any other side effects and if I was struggling I wouldn't hesitate to go back on it. Also been fairly straightforward coming off it again x
