Does anyone else always cry on their birthday?

I don't understand it, it always happens, every single year. Even if I have really nice cards and presents, I just get this awful paranoid feeling that no one really means it and it leaves me miserable and in tears. I look forward to the day, and by the end of it I never want to have another.

Is there anyone out there who is like this? It sounds so childish. Wish I knew why I get like it.

Almost feels like I'm angry with people. For what though??!

Hazy, helium is good...we only ever had crappy 'floor' balloons!!!

10/10 for keeping it all going it must be very hard work.

Just seen other thread about this below. It's interesting how many people get upset about them.

I really enjoyed birthdays when I was little - I liked having my birthday at the beginning of the school year as I seemed to get more of a fuss made of me. I think now it is just more of an "ordinary day" I get disappointed.

JARM · 02/09/2007 17:43

i always cry on my birthday.

not sure why, but i just dont enjoy them.

always want a "special" day and never get it.

DH even put in his card this year to me "Sorry it isnt as special as you would like"

i got a box of chocs from the girls and a £20 voucher from my brother and SIL

that was it.

the day passed as any other.

hope my girls enjoy their birthdays way more than i ever did.

flightattendant · 02/09/2007 18:08

I think we're similar, Jarm, it's that expectation followed by, well, an ordinary kind of day.

I actually hate being the centre of attention or made a fuss of, so baffled as to what I actually want people to do iyswim!

Maybe it's expecting it to make everything alright - make you feel happy, make you not be depressed or have any other worries - of course even the best party or the best presents cannot deliver that. So of course it's disappointing.

Maybe it's like the cherry on the cake...you can only truly enjoy all that stuff if you're happy already?

And I definitely wasn't when I was a kid...

This is a dilemna until you remember that your partner [presumably] loves you very much, but just needs to know exactly what to do. As such, I've just had a brilliant birthday, cos I arranged the framework myself and let him fill in the details. As long as you book the venue and the babysitter, and then he collects the bill. []

flightattendant · 04/09/2007 19:06

Nice one, Stickle! Sadly I don't think mine ever did...but will bear in mind next time!

yep, I've just signed into MN, and being a bit green, I realised after my last posting that maybe I was being too presumptous. I'm sorry. But, that said, the theory that you preplan everything yourself, so you spend the time just as you want, still stands ???

flightattendant · 04/09/2007 19:47

Absolutely a good idea, and no offence taken!!! Understand what you meant

lilolilmanchester · 04/09/2007 19:53

Yes, because my Dad died on my birthday and even tho it was quite a few years ago now, my Mum always gets upset and so do I. But that's the only reason, the children are usually so excited and make the day so special that the tears are soon gone.

flightattendant · 05/09/2007 07:31

Lilolil - children can make us happy even if we don't want to be
