My ocd is obsessive thoughts about something bad happening to my sister or mum so much that I am constantly phoning them throughout the day to check they are ok. It’s go so out of hand that it’s starting to affect everything including my little boys šŸ˜•. I wake up every morning full of anxiety like an adrenaline surge!! Cognitive behaviour therapy hasn’t worked and sertraline didn’t seem to have much effect and had to stop due to bad diarrhoea. That was exactly a year ago. I’ve battled on for a year and buried my head but I can’t carry on like this. Anyone got any positive stories of antidepressants for OCD xxxxx

Hello, I thought I’d join this thread (just discovered it). I started my own thread some days ago but there’s a lot more information here and more comments here. My ds16 has just started on his Sertraline journey. Today is day 7 on 25mg, for ocd intrusive thoughts. We are both very nervous of possible side effects and whether it will work. Reading the comments here, it all seems very up and down so perhaps it’s made me even more nervous. Does anyone else have a teen starting Sertraline?

salty78 · 17/11/2020 09:21

I'm on day 18 of starting sertraline. The fog started to lift at the end of the first week and I started to feel more positive and more like myself again last week, got out and exercised every day and thought I would be able to go back to work this week after 2 weeks off.

But I took a real dip again 2 days ago, the dizziness made me faint on the bathroom floor in the middle of the night. I haven't fainted since I was a teenager so it really freaked me out. I feel really low and run down again with a constant headache. Yesterday I had awful sweating and kept having to go to the loo like I had a bladder infection. I'm feeling a bit better today hoping it picks up again this week but my GP has now signed me off for 4 more weeks.

I'm worried that work will be unhappy about it. I've always been hardworking and dependable and not really had time off sick, apart from the odd day for a bad cold, for years. But they don't easily tolerate 'snowflakes' and I think I will now struggle to get a good reference if I leave and my career is over. But at the same time I'm feeling too low to really properly care either way at the moment.

@salty78 sorry to hear about the bumpy ride and scary fainting. I hope you continue to get better. Can I ask how did you start on Sertraline, was your dose phases in gradually or were you just recommended your full dose straightaway?

salty78 · 17/11/2020 16:12

@Aoki my prescription was for 50mg straight away. Please don't be worried by my sorry tale! Your DS is young and if he's not particularly sensitive to medication he may well have no problems at all, especially on a lower dose initially. From reading reviews of the medication a lot of people are fine from the start with minimal side effects and the long term benefits seem to massively outweigh any initial ups and downs, which is what has kept me going so far. All the best to you both.

Aoki · 17/11/2020 17:59

That’s very kind if you. Thanks. How you continue to get better.

Aoki · 17/11/2020 18:02

ā€œHopeā€ you continue to get better and work are reasonable about your time off. I can’t imagine fainting at work would affect your reference and if it does, you can certainly take that further. Surely they can’t give a bad reference for being ill?

Vml12345 · 19/11/2020 14:23

@Funnyfishface did you start your medication? I’ve got fluoxetine which was prescribed Monday but I’m too scared to take it šŸ˜•xx

Funnyfishface · 19/11/2020 23:03

No I haven’t started them.
I’m just so scared
I get the courage then read a horror story and get put off.
If I start tomorrow by Christmas I might feel better.
If if if

Funnyfishface · 19/11/2020 23:05

I have had the medication since August 5th Sad

Vmc1234 · 20/11/2020 08:05

I’m the same @Funnyfishface I promised myself today was the day but I don’t want to spoil Christmas by being a mess with side effects. I have good days and think I’m not too bad then a bad day where my anxiety and ocd are through the roof. I tried sertraline this time last year and it was tough and had to come off it because of diarrhoea šŸ˜•. Wish I want so scared!!! Xx

Funnyfishface · 20/11/2020 08:44

Yes I get it.

I am also feeling ok just now but i know I’m on a rollercoaster of emotion.
If I felt like this all the time I think I could cope.
I also ask everyone’s advice - my partner doesn’t think I need the medication but then he doesn’t suffer with anxiety and he doesn’t know the dark thoughts I am having

Sorry I’m not offering any help

RoosterTheRoost · 20/11/2020 23:52

I was prescribed sertraline today. I haven’t decided whether to take it yet. I really wish there was another way to feel better. How are your symptoms now, Vml?

GC12345 · 21/11/2020 07:54

@RoosterTheRoost, I’m up and down some days better than other but I’ve felt like this for years and just want to feel better but hate the thought of medication. Like you I wish there was another way x

Starrr123 · 02/02/2022 15:47

@Crisps75 did the ear ringing stop? Xx

Crisps75 · 02/02/2022 15:56

@Starr123, it took a few weeks but gradually got quieter. It didn’t go completely but now only bothers me occasionally when it’s particularly bad.

Starrr123 · 02/02/2022 19:38

@Crisps75 glad it has eased! Ive been taking amatriptyline and the ringing has been soo loud! Gonna stop it to zee if it eases and also my tmj pain eases.

Crisps75 · 03/02/2022 19:03

@Starr123 Yes I would, when I swapped to something else it got a lot better. See if they can change it, there’s plenty of different types and you want to live with constant ringing. Good luck!
