Sertraline quick question

GMtoBe · 10/11/2018 20:40

I've recently started taking sertraline. It's my sister's wedding in 4 weeks and I've been avoiding alcohol but would like half a glass of champagne with the speeches but am happy to go without. My gp said that a small amount of alcohol as long as I don't have it around the time I take the sertraline should be ok but I've also read it can cause drowsiness. I take my tablet first thing, speeches will be around 5.30pm. I won't be driving but will be looking after dd.

Would I be better off avoiding the half a glass of champagne? I know this doesn't seem like a big issue and it's not really I just wanted to know. Thank you in advance.

I’ve had alcohol on it and didn’t notice any effects.

I’d say half a glass will be fine.

Enjoy your sisters wedding.

Thank you so much!

I take it at night - any drowsiness is helpful then! Never noticed any issues with alcohol.

GMtoBe · 10/11/2018 20:44

That's great news. I don't have to worry/think about it now!

Have never ever noticed any interaction between the two. And I frequently drink a lot more than 1/2 glass bubbly as does literally everyone I know who takes SSRIs.

Sorry to hijack thread but a friend of mine was wondering similar recently but mitrazapine (might have spelt it wrong), she hadn't drunk since she started taking it but was considering a glass with dinner, didn't in the end though.

toldmywrath · 10/11/2018 20:48

I take my sertraline at night and enjoy the odd glass or two. It shouldn't affect your enjoyment of your sister's wedding.( Any reason why you take it in the morning?)

GMtoBe · 10/11/2018 20:58

Oddly I take it in the morning because the gp told me it could cause me to not be able to sleep! But that if I have alcohol it will make me really drowsy.

I take Mirtazapine and noticed no effects when drinking with it.

Lineofbeauty · 10/11/2018 21:22

Mirtazapine is quite sedating. I also take this and adding alcohol is definitely more sweating. However generally you can time.it so you don't take the mirtazapine until after the drink has worn off. It takes about 1h30 to reach maximum sweating effect in my experience. If your friend is very new to mirtazapine I would strongly recommend staying away from booze completely. It is .... quite something when you start taking it. I felt like a zombie for 2 weeks although love it now. It has singlehandedly rid me of a sleep disorder I'd had for 30 years.

Lineofbeauty · 10/11/2018 21:22

Sedating not sweating! FFS!

Lineofbeauty · 10/11/2018 21:23

Maximum SEDATION! Oh good grief.

BibiThree · 10/11/2018 21:27

I've been on sertraline 100mg for about 4 years, never noticed an interaction with alcohol. Go easy, but one or two drink should be okay.

QuilliamCakespeare · 10/11/2018 21:29

I drank alcohol on it and didn't notice any real difference other than perhaps getting tipsy quicker. I didn't have any heavy sessions or anything, just a couple of glasses.

huggybear · 10/11/2018 21:35

Thanks everyone - just asked and she's been taking it for a year and not had anything to drink in that time, she also says she's not actually sure it does anything and hadn't noticed a sedating effect. It's difficult because she has a physical illness too and she's worried about upsetting the status quo with medications and making her condition worse.

Lineofbeauty · 10/11/2018 21:41

If she doesn't notice it being sedating then I'd estimate she will be fine after a glass of wine. However if she hasn't drunk anything at all for a whole year and is also on Mirt.... go steady now;)

Magenta46 · 10/11/2018 21:46

I'm taking sertraline. I have no adverse reaction if I drink alcohol.

Aaaahfuck · 10/11/2018 21:51

I don't drink much so even when I do I feel it! I've been on sertraline for about 4 weeks now and I've been ok with the odd glass of wine. However I went from a low dose of citalopram so maybe was used to SSRI's. I. Recommend having a glass of wine and seeing how you react.

huggybear · 10/11/2018 21:56

Thanks for the advice. You're absolutely right - anyone taking a year off would need to go steady! She was never a big drinker but was a little sad about another Christmas without a tipple.

LizzieSiddal · 10/11/2018 21:59

OP if I were you I’d try a glass of something a week before the wedding. I’m sure you will be fine, and then you won’t worry about it at the wedding.

GMtoBe · 10/11/2018 22:01

That's a good idea, I'll try something before we go to make sure I'm ok.

LunchBoxPolice · 10/11/2018 22:06

I take Sertraline 100mg in the morning. If I drink, even just half a glass of wine, I get drunk and fall asleep very quickly. I would recommend trying it out at home before the wedding!

LizzieSiddal · 10/11/2018 22:37

Great! Enjoy the wedding.

QuilliamCakespeare · 11/11/2018 19:55

The dosage is a fair point actually, I was only on 20mg.

BippityBoppity87 · 11/11/2018 20:02

I actually found the opposite. I suppose it affects everyone differently, but I found I could drink and not feel anything from alcohol at all. When usually it would affect me straight away. I'm currently on 100mg.
