Anyone else had this - what did it do for you?

TIA

If you are anxious,it just kind of takes the edge off the anxiety.
What dose have you been prescribed?

Molesworth · 28/03/2007 11:35

diazepam is valium (iirc) so it will have a calming effect, very good for anxiety

they don't tend to prescribe it ongoingly though as it is so addictive

Enid · 28/03/2007 11:36

valium is excellent for panic attacks if used sparingly

expatinscotland · 28/03/2007 11:36

Expect to be able to fall asleep if you're having trouble getting off to sleep because of anxiety.

thelittleElf · 28/03/2007 11:36

My mum's recently been on this after nursing her youngest sister through terminal cancer . It made her feel very tired at some points, but you really have to try and listen to your body. If it's possible to sleep, then do so!
She is soooo much better now, is off the tablets and has returned to work. These pills just give your body/mind a chance to rest and repair itself . Not a bad thing in my opinion.
Hope they soon start working for you xx

Dose = 2mg "take one as needed". Its because of very high anxiety due to a phobia. Have been referred to psych for CBT for the phobia but have 3 months wait. So my lovely female doc has given me a prescription for 28 tablets when I feel unable to cope.

Does it make you feel dopey? Can I drive? Can I drink? Forgot to ask the doc, was in a right tizz in her surgery. Got very worked up during 45 minute wait to see her.

dustystar · 28/03/2007 11:44

Don't drink with it.

Enid · 28/03/2007 11:47

they work very quickly - within 10 mins

save them for when you really think you are going to freak out

I found just having them in my bag made me much less likely to have a panic attack

you CAN drink with them but I would avoid it unless you want to be utterly wasted - I had two glasses of wine and two 2mg valiums on a flight once and don't remember much about the rest...

I wouldnt drive on them

Enid · 28/03/2007 11:49

they are quite addictive

they make you feel blardly lovely

twoisenoughmum · 28/03/2007 11:56

Yes its the feeling blardy lovely I'm a bit worried about. Its such a long time that I've felt blardy lovely that I know they'll be a temptation. But I need to have them. If I didn't have that prescription in my bag I'd be in a heap right now. Obviously you aren't addicted Enid?

lol no!

I only ever took about 5 and ended up giving the rest to a mate

I had panic attacks a few years ago and had some CBT and bought some good books on anxiety - the valium made me feel I wasnt going to have a panic attack in public so helped me to relax, now I find that relaxation or hot baths etc etc help me to get over any anxious periods.

calebsmum · 28/03/2007 14:29

Hi, I was on diazepam a few weeks ago, it took the edge off my panic attacks. Kind of made me feel like my head was in a fog and I was tired. Took 3 a day for a week, then 1 or 2 a day as and when I needed them for another week then stopped. Had no problems stopping them and still have some left just in case!

twoisenoughmum · 28/03/2007 17:12

Well I took one this afternoon and I honestly don't feel any different at all. Still thumpy heart and slightly shaking. Its only 2mg - I read on the other thread about diazepam for flying phobics that they were prescribed 5mg - do you think I should take another one?

Can I take two at the same time or should I really space them out evenly through the day?

Thanks all who've answered so far.

Can you phone your doctor and ask him?? It didn't stop my panic attacks, just took the edge off them, I also found it took about an hour to work.

mytwocents · 29/03/2007 15:38

Can be very addictive, be careful, also, if taken regularly for long periods of time- say, over a year- you will build up a tolerance to them , meaning you would need more for same affect.
Hope CBT works for you xx

colditz · 29/03/2007 15:41

I personallty found that 2 mg did nothing. I used to take 1.5 to 2 tablets.

Wash one down with hot chocolate.

vvvvvvv · 29/03/2007 15:46

HIYA ALL,im in the same boat well i have been giving 5mg as im flying in a few weeks im the same a bit scared to take em as i have very bad panic attacks and worried it will send one off. i did a thread in health and got very good feed back feel alot better on trying them as s many people say there relaxing.

vvvvvvv · 29/03/2007 16:22

bump

vvvvvvv · 29/03/2007 18:23

ANY IDEAR?

twoisenoughmum · 29/03/2007 19:49

Dear dear Colditz - thank you for that! I will take two if the need arises (with chocolate) and trust I won't expire in the process! You popped into my other thread about the phobia causing the need for drugs. Was it the same prob. you had diazepam for?

vvvvvvvvv - etc - don't quite understand your posts. If you are worried that valium will give you panic attacks, I think that's completely wrong. They are prescribed to suppress your panic reactions (primarily adrenaline, I think), and others appear to be saying that 5mg makes it possible to fly.

Lets not get addicted to them eh? I have enough additictions to contend with, am resolved only to take them in emergencies.

I didn't take them for emet, no, as I don't suffer from it - but I do suffer VERY badly from a needle phobia.

So last time I had to go to the dentist, I took 1.5, and it took the edge off the panic, but had I need to have a needle I would have had to take two. Wore off after a few hours - it must have been hilarious to watch me trying to do my supermarket shop afterwards, with my mum rampaging up and down the aisles at Morrison's like a pissed off rhino.

I was prescribed the diazepam 2mg while 7 months pregnant (although I didn't use it) so it cannot be that strong.

colditz · 29/03/2007 19:57

I did do my shopping, after lots of calm cooing and ambling about.

MrsApron · 29/03/2007 20:00

they are bloody lovely. my doc prescribed them when my dad died gave me 28 and told me to come back in a week for more .

I used them sparingly and think they lasted 6 months good for sleep as others have said.

twoisenoughmum · 29/03/2007 20:00

LOL! I am picturing myself cooing calmly and ambling about with a sick bucket!
