I'm crying too. My best friend spent two hours shouting abuse in my face last week because I was too 'morose' when she came to see me. No exuse that both my daughters went to live with their father within the last few months and I had buried another friend the day before BF came round. I regularly feel a terrible failure as a mother. If only BF had said the same things as Tanya. If only.

Marina · 02/10/2006 14:57

That is a really wise and compassionate piece, thanks for linking cod

Pruhoohooohoooooni · 02/10/2006 14:58

anorak, just x-posted with you. I'm so sorry

Mercy · 02/10/2006 15:02

I've always liked Dr Byron, she is genuinely sympathetic to families imo.

(except for that keeping children in their rooms bit - is that her??)

IvortheEngine · 02/10/2006 15:06

anorak - Just a quickie as I need to prepare for an interview tomorrow.

Your "best friend" doesn't deserve to be anywhere near you. You're a lovely person (and, for other posters, I've met her so I know) and my best friend would not be horrible to me, just truly supportive. Tell her that she's not helping at all and is making things worse and if she doesn't change immediately and permanently, then you're keep her out of your life until she does. Thinking of you.

soaringflyingCOD · 02/10/2006 15:37

Thanks for the kind words. I've been friends with her for 20 years, she's done some wonderful things for me in the past. It's just that she doesn't 'do' sadness or depression, or forgiveness and she is so angry with my daughters and frustrated about how much they've hurt me. When she's upset it always manifests itself in angry outbursts but never before has she directed one at me . She sees it as weakness if you don't react angrily against poor treatment, but I can see so many reasons why my daughters need to feel they can come to me.

Tanya was so right about depression and the kind of support a person needs when they are overwhelmed by life.

by the way IvorTheEngine fio has met me but she thinks I'm a cow

cardy · 02/10/2006 15:44

Excellent reponse, so simply put yet so true. It's nice to hear someone say that not all behavioral problems can be sorted out with a technique, as if everything in life can be sorted out by sticker charts!

soaringflyingCOD · 02/10/2006 15:47

they are pretty good htough

she is also rocky-chick chicky-rock

will go and read article now .. I am sure I won't be disappointed

Mercy · 02/10/2006 15:53

Do you mean Dr T's advice is common sense? Yes, agree.

But not that bit about keeping children in their rooms for x minutes according to their age. Tried it once, never ever again. Or am I getting confused with Supernanny?

soaringflyingCOD · 02/10/2006 15:54

no dr t reckons kids should go to bed in own rooms
yes
supernnany says go to room for ebing naughty
we do that but i jsut send them and thats that really. no timing or anything, they often just find somehtign to play with up there

anorak - You are kidding me about Fio, aren't you!

I hope things get better for you really soon.

bluejelly · 02/10/2006 16:02

I think cod is working as a pr for dr t

bluejelly · 02/10/2006 16:03

no i heartily agree, she is fab

bluejelly · 02/10/2006 16:03

Friend of a friend works on the house of tiny tearaways and says she is lovely in real life too

Mercy · 02/10/2006 16:05

Thought I'd got it wrong.

My mum (frequently) tells a story about how when I was little and was told to go to my room for being naughty. Apparently I said "I don't care, I shall read my books". My mum then said she would take my books away and my response "Well I shall sing then!". And I did, at top volume.

Twiglett · 02/10/2006 16:06

I would like to be her friend

and I appreciate how slightly stalkerish that sounds .. but I reckon we'd get on

but I have enough friends and I'm not a stalker really so if Dr T ever does read this she can rest assured I shan't be hanging around in the shadows and trying to get her to sign my bare breast
