Good idea about the stock cube for salt, also coke is good for getting sugar into him if he is weak and floppy, I heat it first to get the bubbles out and also not good to be sipping really cold liquids, need to be blood temperature ideally. Another good thing is ginger, does he like the taste of ginger? Bottle Green do a nice ginger and lemongrass cordial, a bit pricey though, weak with boiled, cooled water. So proud of you, zoo.

Sorry, x post. Is dp coming back at all, or is he working again tonight? Whereabouts are you? Are you in reach of any of us? :(

Hi really really feel for you I have had this fear on and off over the years so think you have been very brave.People have told me that flat coke is good for tummy bugs stops the sickness something to do with the acid. It could be a high temperature making him sick in that case have you given him calpol? Cold compress on forehead will help.If it is a sick bug you probably will not catch it if you are fastidious about washing your hands before eating.
What I have found is in situations over the years I have just had to face situations and get on with it as part of my job as a nursery nurse. Now I am a Sahm my fear has gotten the better of me again Sad Think its bad enough to not want to work with pre-school children again.

Please just give him clear fluid...I.e water or flat lemonade. For 24 hours after last vomit.
If he has diahorrea then get him some dioralyte.
Sorry you are both going through this...had it 3 weeks ago with both of mine.
It's not nice, but we got through it.
Good luck x

oh livedin, i feel for you so much, I really do. The panic is so awful and somutterlymexhausting. Your poor ds. It's such a worry when all is not well with them (I face my own, different challenges with my two so I understand a tiny bit)

for now you are doing brilliantly. I will be here to hold your hand tonight while I am on my own v watch. how does ds say he feels?

bb, that's funny, I often crave a bouillon/veg stock cube in boiling water when I am not well. And salty rice so will often make rice cooked in a stock cube for myself or the ds's when getting over a flu.

kerstina, sorry you are a sufferer too. Many a time I have seriously thought about retraining to work with children (would adore to do something at ds2's pre-school but similarly too scared Sad

somutterlymexhausting???

Now I have lost my ability to speak English!

So utterly exhausting is what I meant to say.

Sorry, Badvoc seems to know better than me, Blush I only mentioned coke on the advice of my next door neighbour who is a retired nurse and the ginger cordial because it always helps me. Unfortunately I can't take Dioralyte as it just makes me heave all the more. Sad All that notwithstanding, you're doing a grand job, zoo, hang on in there!

Hope you have a better night x
Frantic...I was told that my my old gp too, but nhs guidelines state only clear fluid.
And don't let them eat - I know it's hard when the beg - but it won't help them and will result in more vomiting :(
I make my kids wait at least 8 hours after vomiting for food. Just clear fluid til then.

Ah! FWIW "clear fluids" simply means, "fluids that leave minimal residue in the intestinal tract" it doesn't, necessarily, mean, "colourless" :) It IS important to have salts and sugars if the patient also has diarrhoea and if they can't stomach diarolyte then any sugary liquid that they can tolerate is good for them. However, don't think zoo's ds has diarrhoea so probs best to stick to water for the time being as you say. :) How are you doing, zoo? Slightly concerned that you've gone quiet. :(

I remember reading book by a gp years ago when ds1 was small and in the section in vomiting it said:
"If a child is vomiting give clear fluid. That means water. Not cola, not ginger beer, not milk!"
It stayed with me I guess and I have followed that advice ever since :)
I know when I am sick (shudder) I couldn't stomach anything but water.
I don't mind the black currant dioralyte! The natural one is horrid though...

Oh no no no NO NO and no

BB you are the most amazing, clever, comforting and very wise source of comfort. I just wish you could believe/take on board some of it for yourself. Or failing that I wish I could offer you similar amounts of comfort.

I am so sure she is fine. Remember, my ds2 groaned and wriggled all night last night in his sleep? You told me it was most likely bad dreams. He was absolutely fine.

Go to sleep woman Grin
