Rubbish things people say

Having only ventured into this forum recently apologies if this is old hat. Thought it would be therapeutic for us to share the idiotic things people say about MH, though sometimes I envy their lack of understanding.
My favourite, so to speak, is still my mum saying that I "cannot expect to be happy all the time"...

I have bpd and on describing the symptoms to a friend he said 'well that's how all girls are, isn't it?'

Too many to mention, but it's the ones from hcps that get to me because they really should know better. I have anorexia and a GP when I was first diagnosed said I should eat peanuts??!! A nurse on a psych unit said 'I wish I had some of what you've got' after weighing herself in front of me. A CPN said 'if I could give you some of my weight, we'd both be fine'... she said this over and over, despite me telling her it didn't help. I was on a general ward last year and one of the medical Drs said he'd send the psych team to see me and they would tell me why I don't want to eat - that one made me laugh. After 16 years of off and on treatment, someone would finally give me the answer Grin

Well, that's the best laugh I've had in a long time, apparently I needed to cheer up and you've really help me pull my socks up, man up and pull it together. I will be so much better in the morning.... As I smack my head off a brick wall... So much of it is tolerating ignorance and taking the time to be kind to yourself and allow yourself to get better... Listen to me full of great advice I can't bring myself to take. Thank you so much for this thread, cheered me up even if only for ten mins xxxxxx big hugs and bashing of heads together to you all Xxxxx

My therapist told me after bribing a suicidal man off a bridge for three hours to let him take him to hospital, because the man had, had a drink they were sorry they could not take him, with a few harsh words from my therapist they finally took him in but discharged him that morning!! He said that he was appalled by the lack of caring in the system.. I agree strongly, they have the qualifications but why do they work in that environment if they actually don't give a monkeys?

My dad told me "you don't SEEM depressed" and he also said "I don't think you ARE depressed, you don't need pills, you always seem happy" (err...yes because I'm good at putting a 'front' on, despite having had a breakdown in April).

He also said "I can spot depressed people a mile off and I don't think you are". He is not a doctor.

"you are too eloquent to be depressed"
