Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.
For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting.

JARGON alert
16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.

Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF

No alcohol or junk on FDs

Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, tel:850-1000 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.

Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Jump in and say hello!!

Morning all, who’s jumping on the fast train with me this week?! I am fasting b2b today and tomorrow and another on Thursday. DH is away and I intend to capitalise on just cooking for myself. First FD in two and a half weeks so I suspect it will be challenging… wish me luck!

check in if you’re joining me 🙂

Morning everyone. I am with you today @harriethoyle hoping for a b2b too. Weekend of overindulging (again!!) means I am back up on the scales again! I had dorset apple cake for breakfast yesterday as we had run out of everything and then out for dinner last night so need to get my lazy bum back in gear. Planning on black bean soup tonight with cherry tomatoes and sweet potato with an egg and maybe some avocado. Currently drinking back coffee to keep myself going. @TeaRose29 I will have to look into the collagen thing- I had never heard of it. @tryingtomakesenseof hope the steroids kick in and you start feeling loads better.

SmellyMe · 29/09/2025 10:39

Well, I am not fasting today @harriethoyle but I am lurking and will try and make a come back next week. I am not doing so well on old calorie counting. I have shifted a grand total of zero!! No gains though! Same boat @tryingtomakesenseof

I finally went to the gym at the weekend after a long sabbatical - June. I totally got out of my routine since moving/holiday etc and have had a big job on at work. There have been opportunities for me to go running during the day but I haven’t taken them. I’ve had a bit of a mental block thinking it’ll be so hard since I’ve had such a break. My treadmill run was a piece of cake! I am in agony from the resistance training though- ouch!!

I thought I could try the “mini” but I can’t do them I’ve discovered.

im feeling a bit crap as my kids have passed on all of their germs and this is not a week to fast. Hopefully I’ll feel ok to go back to the gym next weekend again and the next FD will be Monday 06/10.

WeightLossForWalking · 29/09/2025 12:32

I'm fasting today!

I've made loads of progress on the walking on my recovering ankle - but in doing, have totally undermined the weight loss. I can now get to a little café about 100m from my door, and am visiting it daily as a much-needed sit-down between longer hobbles.

But of course this means that, every single time I'm there, I feel very deserving indeed of indulging as a reward for all my walking. It's disrupted all the good habits I'd been building, without me really realising until today, when I found that I'm still sitting on a chunky (for me - I'm 5 foot 3) 10 stone 4, just outside my healthy BMI. Like TeaRose and MrsBertieBoo, I've been fighting to get below 10 for weeks! But suspect now I've not been fighting hard enough...

So - back on the wagon. Fasting at least twice this week, ideally more (alternate days?!) and eating well in between, with a cuppa only at the café. Hopefully soon I'll be walking far enough that I'll no longer need to pay to use them as a pit-stop! 😂

harriethoyle · 29/09/2025 14:00

Super busy morning which meant getting through to lunchtime was a breeze! Lentil soup which came in at a very virtuous 103 calories... Deliciously autumnal too!

Hi all
Posting for accountability even though I’m not fasting at the moment.
Trying to reduce the fizzy and drink more water, and have meals instead of constant grazing.

well done to all the fasters!

harriethoyle · 29/09/2025 19:44

Cutting out snacking really helps me @tryingtomakesenseof - good luck!

Kitchen closing on 513. Back tomorrow to use the other 787 🤣

Checking for day 2 of my b2b. Expecting today to be harder, not least because I’ve got PT at 6. Having soup for tea so it’s ready within two minutes of getting home 🤣

OP posts:
MsBertieBoo · 30/09/2025 09:00

Ooooo what flavour soup are you having @harriethoyle? I love soup, especially at this time of the year. Sadly my husband is not such a fan, it's one of the few things we disagree on (foodwise anyway 😁). I am here for a b2b. Hairy bikers chicken jalfrezi later although doesnt look enough for 4 (currently trying to clear the rammed freezer so that everything doesnt keep falling out as soon as I open the door, it has cracked the floor in one place) so have also got some spinach and lentil curry out too to supplement. I suspect DH and I will have the lentils and DC the chicken. Good luck for today everyone.

harriethoyle · 30/09/2025 20:51

I had home made lentil and ham soup @MsBertieBoo and it was delicious! Have been baking tonight for a work thing tomorrow and that’s been very challenging 😬 but I reckon I’m finished on about 900 for day 2 so c1600 for the b2b. I’ll take that!

OP posts:
MsBertieBoo · 01/10/2025 08:52

I think I finished yesterday around 650 but had home made curry from the freezer so bit of a guess! Am going for a mini today, still trying to shift this last half a stone. Will see how I go. Homemade lentil soup sounds absolutely delicious, I should make a batch as it's my daughter's favourite (although DS won't eat anything other than heinz tomato without making a fuss!).

harriethoyle · 01/10/2025 10:39

This soup freezes really well @MsBertieBoo so if you have a non-fan extra portions can be frozen for future use - although that will not help you with your groaning freezer situation!

OP posts:
TeaRose29 · 01/10/2025 11:10

I’m regrouping today after a few busy days, and guess what I’M STILL 10.2 1/2 😊. I love the sound of lentil soup! The weather has been beautiful up here but decidedly autumnal today. Think I might make some vegetable and lentil soup and have it as part of a mini.

harriethoyle · 02/10/2025 08:34

That all sounds good @TeaRose29 - keep it up!

Third FD today although will be nearer 700 cals than 500 I think. I’ll take that for a bonus FD!

OP posts:
MsBertieBoo · 02/10/2025 09:59

Managed a 3rd FD yesterday and this morning I am just a fraction under 64kgs! Still not quite under the 10st mark but slowly getting there. Although true to form I am sure I will then blow it out of the water come the weekend! Out for lunch at friends on Sunday which will involve pudding I am sure (although their portions are tiny compared to my usuals making me realise what I pig I am 😂). Well done everyone for a good week. @WeightLossForWalking how is the ankle?

harriethoyle · 02/10/2025 12:32

Brilliant @MsBertieBoo - that's a great result. Try for a bit of virtue until the weekend proper gets here so you've pre-loaded!

Kitchen closing on 843. Today has been TOUGH 🤣🙈 cannot wait for breakfast tomorrow morning!

OP posts:
harriethoyle · 03/10/2025 09:43

FEWMIN’!!

Not an ounce off overnight after all that virtue. Ho hum. At least I enjoyed breakfast!

OP posts:
MsBertieBoo · 03/10/2025 10:10

Same here- I went for a mini yesterday and am actually a bit heavier this morning despite being absolutely beyond reproach yesterday. I had a miso soup for lunch and then chicken katsu with a tiny amount of rice for dinner and I bloody baked mine despite frying everyone elses and it wasnt half as nice so I am feeling pretty disgruntled this morning!

MsBertieBoo · 03/10/2025 14:40

ps I am having pasta + garlic bread + wine this evening goddamit!

harriethoyle · 03/10/2025 14:49

Yeah I was going to abstain from the vino but now I’m very tempted by the thought of a glass or two @MsBertieBoo 🤣🤣🤣

Morning all! Anyone with me? B2b today and tomorrow and possibly Thursday…

OP posts:
MsBertieBoo · 06/10/2025 09:25

I'm right here with you planning a b2b and then probably some mini's thrown in too. I had roast dinner for lunch yesterday and then cheese board, pate, crisps etc last night washed down with about a tonne of red wine so very much needed!

harriethoyle · 07/10/2025 08:29

Kitchen closed yesterday at 686. Signing in for day 2 of a b2b…

OP posts:
MsBertieBoo · 07/10/2025 08:49

I think I ended yesterday around 650 although no idea as homemade burritos so bit of a guess. I did sneak about 4 tortilla chips too 😁. Second day here, planning nothing during the day but may cave and have a miso soup for lunch and then pasta for dinner as DD has football practice and all a bit of a rush. Good luck everyone fasting today.
