Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.
For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting.

JARGON alert
16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.

Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF

No alcohol or junk on FDs

Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, tel:850-1000 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.

Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Jump in and say hello!!

@tryingtomakesenseof I’m pretty happy with where am I tbh. I’d probably like to shave a couple more kgs off so I have more wiggle room for high days and holidays but I’m a size 10 now and that was always my goal. Maybe I’ll concentrate and get down to 66kg as my ultimate goal but as long as I keep toning up, that’s more important to me.

That’s great. Really pleased for you!

harriethoyle · 08/09/2025 07:13

Morning all, am FD today and Wednesday. Have a very early start tomorrow so I’m just going to play that by ear… who’s with me?

SmellyMe · 08/09/2025 09:05

I am @harriethoyle! I think I actually managed to lose 1lb last eeen and that’s the goal. My scales are weird. The floor in my new bathroom is a bit uneven so I have to move them about and go for best of 5 😆.

Delay not denial is a good mantra!

MsBertieBoo · 08/09/2025 09:11

Morning everyone. Hope you all enjoyed the weekend @harriethoyle how was the birthday celebration?
I am feeling a bit flat this morning after totally stuffing myself yesterday. Fri was my birthday and had some lovely siracha mushrooms in the morning after a big walk and then lobster and fries in the evening with a small piece of cake. Sat we dragged the kids on a 13 mile walk (they were delighted 😂) with dinner at a tiny greek place at the end so was doing really well and then yesterday I just went bananas for absolutely no reason whatsoever- I wasn't even hungry but just couldn't stop eating crap (breakfast, a big choc chip cookie, sandwiches, crisps, lasagne, garlic bread and cake oh and two massive bits of Toblerone to finish off) today I just feel a bit crap about it. We are out at the theatre tonight seeing Adam Kay and then I have 2 days in London Tues/Weds for work so I am planning FD today and then maybe Thurs but atm just feels a bit pointless after all my self sabotaging. I know I just need to pull myself out of the funk and get on with it otherwise I will just spiral.

Journeyto180 · 08/09/2025 09:12

Good morning all,

Another week to try and make good decisions!

The weekend wasn't too bad - although can always be better. Did about 17hrs fasted on each day and then ate/drank as I pleased.

Weight on Mon 01/09/25 was 209.4lbs
Weight on Mon 08/09/25 is 206.4lbs (⬇3lbs)

A good Mon - Fri really helped here, and although I planned to, I didn't get a workout in at all this week.

Plan for this week is

  • OMAD Mon - Fri
  • A few low intensity walks
  • A more mindful weekend
  • and hopefully another 3lbs off if possible.

@MsBertieBoo

Happy belated Birthday.

Don't beat yourself up about it - It was your birthday weekend. Like everyone says, this is a lifestyle and so one bad weekend wont ruin your hard work. And a 13 mile walk is not for the faint hearted - your body probably needed the fuel.

Today is a new day to reset and continue. Try for your FD and then assess each day depending on what you have to do.

MsBertieBoo · 08/09/2025 12:36

thanks @Journeyto180, I needed to hear that! Just feeling so cross with myself. Anyway as you say today is a new day and this is WOL rather than fad up and down. I will re-group and carry on. xx

harriethoyle · 08/09/2025 13:58

Agreed @Journeyto180 has it nailed @MsBertieBoo! Just keep on keeping on. This is a marathon not a sprint!

Birthday was lovely thank you and stayed alcohol free too which was a bonus. Helped keep the cals down anyway.

i have survived the day, too! @harriethoyle.
well done on FD/PT combo 💪🏼💪🏼

harriethoyle · 09/09/2025 08:29

I’m feeling relatively chipper despite half 5 start… so I’m going to aspire to second day of b2b and see how I get on. Wish me luck!

Good day for me yesterday, Fasted about 21hrs till 6pm and had a chicken wrap, greggs yum yum, some mango and the best cup of tea, closing shop at about 9pm.

Woke up a little bloated, maybe down to the wrap - but all in all, I feel good.

Will aim for similar today, but meal may be a little later as kids have clubs till about 7pm. This may help me get back to 22/2. And will try and miss the carbs on dinner, maybe salmon & veg..... lets see.

harriethoyle · 09/09/2025 19:59

Kitchen closing here on 817 which makes 1478 for my unexpected b2b - happy with that as I’ve done two PT sessions too! Looking forward to breakfast tomorrow 🤤

Journeyto180 · 10/09/2025 09:58

Morning!

Successful fast of 22hrs
Homemade burgers & chips - tasted amazing, probably definitely over indulged. Maybe should have done just the burger.

Woke up feeling dehydrated - so more intentional with the water today.

Work calendar isn't too hectic over the next few days, so getting out for some Vitamin D (and rain) is on the cards. I might also enter the world of calorie counting. Will give today a trial.

Good luck for today all!

WeightLossForWalking · 10/09/2025 10:08

I totally get your frustration, @MsBertieBoo - indulged in a MacDonalds last evening without your excuse of a birthday (Happy Belated!) I had had 3 widely spaced appointments, so 8 long hours at the hospital, though. I'd actually intended to make it a fasting day as you can't really eat there, but got home and cracked with style with the sheer exhaustion. So, half a pound heavier since yesterday, I'm trying again today - and maybe tomorrow (B2B? trying to use the lingo!) Posting for accountability after my failure...

Lucylurker · 11/09/2025 07:24

Morning all, and well done everyone looks like a good few days.
Happy belated birthday @MsBertieBoo and the some hike ( I walk but haven’t managed that). Don’t worry about the birthday calories as @harriethoyle says it’s a marathon. I am on holiday on Sunday ( it’s Marbella for those who asked - no carbs etc) it’s all inclusive which is new to me, and is to celebrate my birthday so a big one 😬. Hopefully I won’t to too much damage, but aim is to get back on plan after, and also play a lot of sport which is included- substitutes sport for too much food.
1lb loss today which surprised me ( thought gain). So happy. So happy with where I got to before my holiday.
Had another wake up call though. My club posted photos of the year on website and caught me walking in a bucket hat, pair of short ( long so not too scary) and a shirt. Dumpy is the only way to describe it! I thought I looked chic and cool!
good luck everyone.

MsBertieBoo · 11/09/2025 10:08

Morning everyone and thank you so much for all the words of encouragement and happy birthdays. @Lucylurker hoping you have the BEST time away, especially now the rains have started here. Sounds fabulous. I bet you did look chic in your outfit - we are always our own worst critics. @WeightLossForWalking i totally feel your pain- it's exhausting hanging around and so boring too and I don't know about you but my brain always chips in with 'you've had a rubbish day, you deserve a treat, go on' etc etc. I had a bit of an unintended FD on Tues in London as I arrived slightly behind schedule for the meeting having not had any breakfast and then there was no chuffing lunch, not even a single paltry biscuit! We finished about 4pm then I hacked across London (still not having eaten) to go and stay with my brother. I had promised to cook for him and his partner as a thank you for having me and he didnt get back from work until about 8.45pm by which time I was almost past caring about eating. I did have dinner though (chicken with mozzarella, salad and homemade garlic croutons) and then went straight to bed! Yesterday still in London I made up for it and made sure I had breakfast before the meeting started (shakshuka wrap) and tuna salad for lunch with some chocolate cashews on the train home then omelette for dinner but then smashed out half a bar of tony's chocolate in front of the tv (my absolute favourite)! Feeling slightly exhausted today and am mainlining coffee. Book club tomorrow and my turn to cook so will see how I go today and tomorrow. Hope all going well for those fasting today xx

Journeyto180 · 11/09/2025 10:11

Maw-nin

Nothing much to report here, but know if i skip a day not updating, I feel like I'll lose my 11 day consistency streak 😂

Good luck for today all

harriethoyle · 11/09/2025 11:05

@MsBertieBoo that definitely counts as a FD!

Gym this morning after a sort of mini yesterday (1100) - aiming for a mini today too because like @Lucylurker I am off on me hols this weekend. A few nights in Portugal and it includes breakfast so I can confidently predict that I will start every day with 2 or 3 pastel de nata...!! So am pre-loading my virtue 😆

OP posts:
SmellyMe · 11/09/2025 16:04

All good progress everyone and happy birthday @MsBertieBoo ! 👏🏼
OMG I had a FD Monday and was absolutely ravenous on Tuesday; so much so that I exceeded my entire recommended calorie intake by around 11.30am!!! Presumably I didn’t eat enough on Monday. I didn’t really count. I thought I would usually have double the broccoli that I cooked but that’s all there was in the fridge! I skipped dinner though and I hope I’ve not wasted my FD.

FD today. I’ve got to do food shopping though! 🤦🏻‍♀️ not good organisation by moi!!!

harriethoyle · 11/09/2025 18:07

Lord no @SmellyMe - food shopping on a fast day?! Insanity! I shall pray for your resistance muscle to be strong 🤣

tryingtomakesenseof · 11/09/2025 21:12

Hi all
Ive been AWOL as I started with a tickly throat and my coil is just settling in so I’ve had lots of cramping and I just went bananas as I remembered that we shouldn’t fast if feeling unwell. however I really should’ve had some sensible nfds instead 😔

I’ve realised that I am pretty much chronically dehydrated and I mistake thirst / lack of energy for hunger. I’ve also realised that pre meeting my husband, I ate for hunger and since living with him, I eat out of routine.

I’m still feeling a bit yucky, low
level symptoms (hubby now has the full on flu) but I feel massively bloated (due on my totm) and full of gas ( fizzy won’t have helped.)

tomorrow’s plan is to hydrate and try to tune back in to genuine hunger cues. Does anyone have any. Tips for this?

harriethoyle · 12/09/2025 12:00

I find fasting helps me recognise hunger cues @tryingtomakesenseof - it reminds me what hungry feels like!

also don’t use illness as a carte blanche to go crazy with your eating. There’s a world of difference between a NFD and a binge. I know this having fallen into this trap last Friday and smashing down a pack of chocolate peanuts. I thought they were 178 calories and they were… for a quarter of the pack!! Oops 🙈 newsflash, it didn’t make my cold feel any better 🤣

MsBertieBoo · 15/09/2025 09:02

Morning all. Hope you all had a lovely weekend. @tryingtomakesenseof I hope you are feeling better? FD for me today- yesterday I had breakfast / brunch of mushroom and cheese burrito which was goddam delicious and then for dinner steak and kidney pie, mash (with lashings of butter) and some veg and then pudding of raspberry cheesecake so much needed today! I have an interview in Cardiff tomorrow so will be nervous so might go for a b2b and get it out of the way. Minor win yesterday when I tried some cords on in Fat Face and the 12 was too big - the 10 fit perfectly, whoop. They were quite loose fitting so not getting too carried away but still felt nice. Good luck for all those fasting today. @harriethoyle hope you are having a lovely time in Portugal with all those delicious pastel de nata!

SmellyMe · 15/09/2025 19:03

I’m going to try calorie controlled this week and see how I get on. I’ve not really shifted much for 8 weeks now. I am successful, mostly, on fast days, but not on my NFDs. It’s essentially undoing all of my hard work. So I’m having the pain of fasting but for no ‘gain’ (in this case, loss).

im thinking a spell on full time calorie controlled my help bringing back some all round discipline. I’m hoping to get some kgs off for Christmas to pre-empt indulgence.

good luck all!
