Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.
For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting.

JARGON alert
16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.

Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF

No alcohol or junk on FDs

Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, tel:850-1000 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.

Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Jump in and say hello!!

Back on it. I’ve had a busy summer doing stuff but seeing my weight hit the same number as the day before I gave birth has given me a kick up the bum that this situation can’t persist. I have 2 stone to lose.

I started August calorie counting and quickly lost 5lbs, but it’s totally miserable doing mental food arithmetic every single meal.

I started again yesterday and have gone back to my tried and true method: nothing but tea, coffee and non-calorie fluids til dinner, then a decent dinner. Last night was the Fast 800 Parmesan Chicken with greens and butternut squash.

Scales showed a 2lb loss this morning 🙌

Thanks to all of you for all your stories and advice. I doom scrolled this thread in my breaks yesterday to motivate me to get over the hunger! Planning to fast on Tuesday and Thursday next week 🤞

TeaRose29 · 23/08/2025 09:39

Under the 10 stones barrier again! 9.13 3/4 this morning. But will I hang on till it over the weekend? Unlikely it will be a sociable one 😊

Darker · 23/08/2025 14:47

I’m hovering under 10 as well.. finding it very difficult to find days when I can fast reasonably easily. I’m finding work very hard and tend to comfort eat when that’s the case. As I work from home the fridge is just to hand….

Lucylurker · 26/08/2025 07:37

Thanks tearose and darker, you have prompted me to convert my weight to stones and I am not too far from under 10 and have given me the motivation to get under this. I was carrying on anyway but those little achievements mean a lot.
Back to normal this week so fasted yesterday and still trying to be careful on nfds.
Clothes starting to look better and feeling better.
good luck everyone.

harriethoyle · 26/08/2025 09:08

Morning all, I’m off this week so being pretty flexible on FDs but am trying to maintain intermittent fasting whilst having a couple of nice meals out etc. I have decided to cut down on my drinking though - only drank alcohol on Saturday of the weekend just gone and think I’m going try for once a week as my default. Obviously some flexibility around holidays etc but week to week it feels like a good way of stopping bad habits creeping in… I think it’ll be hard though! I love my Friday end of the week glass of wine… 😬🍷

Hi all. Could I join you? I've been intermittent fasting... er... intermittently for some time, and am thinking I may take it up again given my current circumstances. A significant injury's left me in a wheelchair for months now. And, inevitably, I've put on weight (about a stone, when I already needed to lose a half stone). While I'm pretty close to a healthy BMI, I can really feel the difference and worry the extra pounds aren't helping me get back to walking well on an already very unhappy ankle! I also don't eat healthily enough, so am thinking low-UPFs + fasting may help me to get back on track, but with the challenges I'm facing, could really benefit from some support in this!

Lucylurker · 26/08/2025 20:36

Welcome @WeightLossForWalking sorry to hear about your injury and hope it is the mend.I find this thread helps me stay on track. Can’t be easy for you. I also am trying to cut down in processed food and bread during the week ( not much luck today), Good luck

TeaRose29 · 27/08/2025 10:22

Welcome @WeightLossForWalking ! I am a huge believer in high protein, which is great for satiety, keeps blood sugar steady and also helps maintain/build muscle. I stick to things like meat, chicken and fish plus veggies, and Greek yogurt, sometimes with berries. I keep tins of lean corned beef, tuna and sardines (not everyone’s cup of tea 😊) in the cupboard for quick meals, and I also have at least one protein shake a day. I’m never hungry in the mornings, so on FDs I find it easier to just have 2 meals, one mid afternoon and another in the evening.

WeightLossForWalking · 27/08/2025 13:30

Thank you, both. I've got off to a racing start, but for all the wrong reasons. I have occasional anxiety, and when it hits in force, my appetite totally disappears. It erupted last evening in a moment of despair at ever getting back on my feet - in trying to walk, I've managed to inflame something and so now, while my ankle's raring to go, have been limited for weeks on end by something minor that is just refusing to recover. It's infuriating. Anyway, I really felt it last evening, let myself get upset, and duly haven't been able to eat.. I'm just about to try to force down some brown seeded toast with peanut butter (protein!) and blueberries. It's really good to be able to share here. This is one of the toughest periods I've been through, ever.

WeightLossForWalking · 27/08/2025 13:43

PS I know so many people have it far worse, and I'm very lucky, really. Just struggling to see things clearly right now...

Lucylurker · 27/08/2025 14:12

Oh so sorry to hear that @WeightLossForWalking sounds incredibly tough and frustrating for you. Try not to be hard on yourself, though I can imagine it must seem never ending. Take care

MsBertieBoo · 01/09/2025 09:42

GOOD MORNING VIETNAM!! Back from hols, hope everyone is doing well and hi to the newcomers. I am back having stuffed my face for 2 weeks- bread, cheese, pies, chips (all the beige) etc and back up to starting weight of 71kgs. Sigh. Today and tomorrow FD to start to undo the damage. On the good news front DH appears to be giving up the wine for a bit which will make abstaining for me a lot easier. Plan today is nothing until dinner and then Thai Chicken Burger with some salad. @TeaRose29 how is the tea?

harriethoyle · 01/09/2025 10:18

Morning all - welcome @WeightLossForWalking and I am also in the same boat @MsBertieBoo having had last week off and thrown fasting to the wind!

FD today and tomorrow, and PT tonight. Might also go for a mini on Wednesday.

I have downloaded the drinkaware app, in order to keep some accountability over my alcohol intake. Have decreed myself designated driver for a meal out on Thursday and planning for at least one abstinent weekend day... Anyone fancy doing that with me? I don't think week days will be a problem but weekends may be! Am off to Portugal in a couple of weeks for DH birthday so am not going to abstain then but looking to get into a pattern of boozing being high days and holidays rather than every weekend Fri-Sun inclusive...

Kitchen closing on 596 and second day of a b2b tomorrow. Back in the game!

OP posts:
MsBertieBoo · 02/09/2025 08:40

Morning @harriethoyle kitchen closed yesterday pretty much dead on 500 (the thai chicken burgers were absolutely delicious so not feeling too hard done by as a result!) into second day too for me. Plan is salmon pasta later which works out to about 400 so just drinking black tea currently.

harriethoyle · 02/09/2025 08:41

@MsBertieBoo have you got a recipe for the Thai burgers? They sound lush!

I had about 4 sweet potato fries with it (the strong roots brand are my favourite when I cant be arsed to make them from scratch plus easier to know how many calories as it's on the bag!) and a massive portion of salad. The bap is included in the calories so all in all it felt like a massive treat. I made the siracha mayo myself using low fat mayo.

harriethoyle · 02/09/2025 12:36

They look really good @MsBertieBoo - I am going to be at a waitrose on Saturday morning so I will pick one of the herb kits up!

OP posts:
harriethoyle · 02/09/2025 12:38

Or might it work with a tablespoon of green curry paste in lieu @MsBertieBoo ?

I'm back again after a long time.

I've been finding it super hard to shift any weight, but everyone that I see IRL that has lost a significant amount of weight seems to attribute it to some sort of fasting. My end goal would be ADF, but I'm going to try OMAD/Small eating window.

So I'm back and taking this very seriously now.

"Delay not deny" seems to keep ringing in my mind. I can eat what I want,, just not whenever I want. Not denying myself, just delaying it a little longer that the immediate desire.

Yesterday, somehow I managed 22hrs, with lots of water, black coffee and hot water with lemon.

I then had

  • a small small plate of spaghetti with a couple meatballs and cheese.
  • a few spoons of Ben & Jerrys Cookie Dough
  • a cup of tea

Embarrassingly starting at 209.4lbs

Fast 1 Start: 31/08 21.00 💛209.4lbs 💛End: 01/09 19.00 (22hrs)
Fast 2 Start: 01/09 20.30 💛208.2lbs 💛

MsBertieBoo · 02/09/2025 13:42

@harriethoyle I am sure curry paste would work although you do get a nice freshness with the herbs etc. Maybe you could use the paste and chuck in some of the thai basil for a bit of freshness?
Hi @Journeyto180 lovely to hear from you - no embarrassment here, we're all just plugging away! I am a total newbie to all this so have no idea what ADF or OMAD mean- please do enlighten me!

Journeyto180 · 02/09/2025 14:11

@MsBertieBoo

Thanks for the rewelcome!

ADF - Alternate Day fasting. one day one, one day off
OMAD - one meal a day/

Nothing new or fancy, just managed to get myself into the world of acronyms.

harriethoyle · 02/09/2025 20:27

Kitchen closing here on 878 - bit higher than intended because of a skinny mocha but it gives c740 for each day of the b2b and I’ll take that! Going to do a third FD on Thursday I think but will be slightly higher because I’ve got PT. Every little helps though!

tryingtomakesenseof · 02/09/2025 22:59

@harriethoylehi!! So pleased to see you here. I used to post on these threads when bigchocfrenzy ran them and I got back to pre pregnancy weight. However another pregnancy + medications have made me the biggest I have ever been. I’ve tried working up to 19:5 everyday but my lifestyle is not making this easy. And I was just thinking that 5:2 is the only thing that worked really well for me. However when I did try it again, I never got very far due to the stage the children were at, chronic fatigue and not having bigchocfrenzy’s constant motivation!

anyway here I am again. I hope to stay consistent this time. Tomorrow morning I’ll weigh myself and post for accountability.

Can I give the measurements a miss because I get obsessed with the actual process of getting the “correct” measurement 🙈

SmellyMe · 03/09/2025 07:52

hello everyone! I took the week off last week and also ate a big Chinese meal on Sunday. I was going to take this week off until I had that glorious meal and then had a FD Monday. My weight is the same as it was when I came back from hols in mid July so I really need to get things sorted.

school is back! Woop Woop and life can resume to normal with routine, space, a moment to breath now and then. Aaahhhhhhhhhh 🫠

I hope everyone is doing well. Tomorrow is my next fast day. I might even make it to the gym at the weekend.
