Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.
For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting.

JARGON alert
16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.

Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF

No alcohol or junk on FDs

Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, tel:850-1000 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.

Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Jump in and say hello!!

Going for a fast tomor. High protein meal tonight. Tomorrow eggs and probably tofu and noodles later. Ended up snacking in eve last week, was on hols, so really want to get through tomor. Anyone with me??

SmellyMe · 10/08/2025 21:47

Yes, me @Bufftailed!

good luck for tomorrow.

I succumbed to the post-fasting binge on Friday 🤭! I was so ravenous, I ate around 700 cals for breakfast. Then I remembered that I had bought a load reduced prawns at waitrose the day before for prawn Marie Rose. I LOVE prawn Marie Rose so try as I might not to eat bread for lunch, I failed. I ate crisps too. And then, I had planned to eat pizza with the kids in the evening. So FAIL!

so, I’ve done this before and still got back to fasting and that 1lb loss a week is definitely an average. I have been consistent on FDs. I’d really like to see some impact on the scales this week so 🤞🏼😇

harriethoyle · 11/08/2025 08:40

I’m joining you both @Bufftailed @SmellyMe - FD today and Wednesday. Fishcake and broccoli for tea tonight.

MsBertieBoo · 11/08/2025 08:55

I'm with you all. FD today and tomorrow, out to the pub Wednesday. Not too bad a weekend although I also succumbed to the pizza- Was bloody delicious though so totally worth it! Today hairy bikers pork and prawn noodle broth.

Lucylurker · 11/08/2025 08:58

Fast day for me as well. Didn’t stick to my bread rule on the weekend but not as much as would usually have. One month to holiday and would like 2 kilos off which should be doable in theory but not much happening on scales. Feel a lot better though and my pooch is going down.
good luck fellow fasters!

TeaRose29 · 11/08/2025 10:12

Me too, after a weekend of anniversary and birthday celebrations. Will probably be a mini as I will be putting in a shift on the tennis court this afternoon 😊. 💪💪

Bufftailed · 11/08/2025 11:22

Great to hear @harriethoyle @Lucylurker @MsBertieBoo @TeaRose29 I’ll report back later. Really tired today as dog kept waking in the heat, but not going over 500 👍🏻👍🏻

SmellyMe · 11/08/2025 15:55

Urgh! Mid afternoon is the worst! I’ve had a pack of smoked salmon so far but flagging now.

must decide on dinner.

must make this day count!

Darker · 11/08/2025 15:56

First fast day for ages and ages due to difficult circumstances. I have eaten lots of fruit.

MsBertieBoo · 11/08/2025 17:04

Am flagging a bit and DH wont be back from work for ages (and don't want to eat too early as then I will just have to go to bed to try not to think about being hungry 😂). I had 2 ryvitas + teaspoon of cottage cheese and some cucumber at lunch. Might have some ginger tea to keep me going. What are you having for dinner @SmellyMe ? Hi @Darker hope you are doing ok x

Bufftailed · 11/08/2025 17:32

Well done all. Closing my kitchen on approx 500

2 boiled eggs, v small portion nuts, vegan bolognese (no pasta), one apple

Just need to get through this eve. Good luck all!!

Darker · 11/08/2025 19:28

vege omelette for me tonight... tomatoes and a small courgette from my garden, eggs from my chickens. And it will be an early night.

MsBertieBoo · 11/08/2025 19:56

Done here too. Hairy dieters pork and prawn broth - was actually delicious. @Darker great dinner of all your local produce- bet it tasted delicious!

SmellyMe · 11/08/2025 21:28

hello again @Darker ! @MsBertieBoo it was a very lazy night tonight. I made the kids pasta and then I had a can of mackerel in smoky bbq sauce (heated) and served on lettuce cups. I

Also doing another FD tomorrow! Got through yesterday at 500, happy for that. Virtually only eating high protein foods really helped. Back tomorrow

Lucylurker · 12/08/2025 08:44

Yesterday done. Trying to count calories today to see what that looks like. So far Greek yoghurt and a peach. Next fast day is tomorrow. Only one month before holiday so would like a loss this week.
Good luck everyone.

MsBertieBoo · 12/08/2025 09:07

Morning everyone. Also fast day here, I woke up hungry which is not a good start! @harriethoyle and @TeaRose29 you are superwomen to be able to train / play tennis and fast, I drag myself round the odd walk and then lie down on the sofa feeling a bit sorry for myself . Annoyingly I cant find the actual recipe on the web for the hairy dieters but can find someone else who made it (and says it isnt that good, but I enjoyed it). https://lucielovesfood.com/2013/07/14/the-pork-and-prawns-balls-in-aromatic-broth-cook-off-the-hairy-dieters-take/
The calorie count is 270 calories per portion. I used those konjac noodles so i could bulk it up.
I really like the hairy dieters- most of the recipes are really good and it takes the faff out of calorie counting as they have done it for you. @Bufftailed there is a recipe in there for prawn cocktail at 169 calories!
SV - I weighed in at 68kgs this morning, when I started faffing about with 1200 a day I was 73ish so I am well happy with that, tried on an old skirt (which I had buried at the back of the wardrobe so as not to have to encounter it and it fitted!!). I am off on holidays on Saturday although only to Wales so there will be no bikini action but still wanted to bank a few pounds lost before I go (and stuff my face with stodge to undo all the hard work no doubt)!
Good luck today everyone.

The pork and prawns balls in aromatic broth cook off: The Hairy Dieter’s take

And another cook off: pork and prawns balls in aromatic broth. It is a bit of a foreign taste to my Mediterranean roots, but still delicious enough to me go back to it over and over again. Nothing …

Thanks @MsBertieBoo I'll give that a rattle it looks delicious. I love the HB, so sad about Dave 😭We were driving down the M6 on the first Dave Day when all the bikers went up North and it was a marvellous sight to behold!

I feel sad when I see his picture in the cook book so the bikers going past must have been really emotional, seemed like such a geuinely nice guy. Is there a way to edit my posts? I keep realising that I have put the wrong thing in mine. The prawn cocktail recommendation was for @SmellyMe not @Bufftailed !

How did everybody get on today? It’s sooo hot! Just cooking fish stew with garlic crouton - smells delicious 366 calories (although I have just weighed out the potato and it’s a measly 1 between 2 people 🙄 ). lunch was a rocket lolly - 52 calories as I went for a walk, got really hot and then couldn’t be bothered to make anything!

harriethoyle · 12/08/2025 20:07

I’m on a nfd and we’ve had a bbq with steak and Malbec. I’ll need my FD tomorrow 😆
